Every year I get a really bad cough usually during early fall/ winter. This year I didn't get it... Until today. It snuck up on me. It started out last night as a sore throat with no sign of a cough. This morning I woke up with the nasty cough, that annoys everyone including me. No medicine I've taken has helped.

Amanda, I have also been told my cough is due to allergies. NOT SO! It is always with a cold or flu, and when they say that it pisses me off and I find another doctor. I have had chest x rays for it, and allergy testing. I have also had my tonsils taken out for it when I was 16 cause they were SURE that was the reason...once again NOT SO!

The list of things that I gave you is the only thing that works for me. Actually, the best thing that works is a round of steroids with everything else I mentioned. It sucks, and not all doctors will give the steroids for it. I have suffered literally for years with this, and no one can really help me. I cough so hard I get bruises around my eyes, I cough so hard it makes me vomit, I feel like I got beaten up, serious stomach pain from working the muscles so hard, and back neck and shoulder pain along with the regular pain of coughing. I also cannot hold my bladder there is so much pressure from the coughing, that I actually have to wear a pad. It is terrible. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. I hope you are feeling better though.

Mix 1/4 tblspn baking soda with a cup of cold or hot water and drink it.. If you have high blood pressure do not use this remedy. There should be directions for the safe amount per day because it does contain mostly salt. It keeps my cough at bay for a few hours, but normally only works if its that dry hacking cough. Just a note...baking soda instantly gets rid of a upset or nauseous stomach almost instantly.

I get chronic bronchitis usually 3-4 times per year. I got the flu vaccination this year and only got it bad 1 time. Here is what I do when I get it,

~humidifier especially at night in your room

~sugar free cough drops (anything with sugar is gonna make it way worse)

~do not eat or drink cold items (also will make you cough a lot)

~sip hot water, sometimes with lemon (honey actually is the only sugar thing that won't make it worse, you can add some honey to it)

~decongestant like sudaphed

~I am on heavy duty cough medicine with codeine. It makes me sick to my stomach, but at least i don't cough

~if it gets really bad, often I am put on an inhaler, and oral steroids.

The only thing I have found that helps me is medicine like saudafed triple action. You have to get it from the pharmacy. Also try putting Vicks vapor rub on the bottoms of your feet and then put socks on.

I'm not a doctor but I am convinced almost all coughs are caused by mucus so if it's wet cough I would try a decongestant basically anything that dries up mucus or an expectorant. If it's the evil dry cough seek medical attention it's probably a nasty virus.

Get the flu shot before winter hits. Keep warm especially your feet and chest. See a different doctor to make sure of what kind of cough it is.

My quick fix, before anything that little miss posted, is to suck on a spoon dipped in honey. For some reason, it soothes just enough to get out of the coughing spasm that you're stuck in (I've woken hubby in my worst stages), and let you get up and start the other remedies.

Just saying and venting. Sorry. Yours may be allergies, I just get so pissed when the doctor just writes me off. One asshole told me "you just have to work through it" I told him I have been working through it since I was 5, I am done working through it.

I have been to the doctor before for this cough and they won't do anything for it. I think its allergies

Personally I try to avoid antibiotics. They're good when needed (like in truly dangerous situations), but they're not great for your body. I've heard it takes 3 years for all the good bacteria in your intestines to recover from one round of antibiotics.

I get phlegm every time I get bronchitis, and have been on many rounds of antibiotics as a "just in case" it never works. Even the doctors say antibiotics don't help for bronchitis. I don't know if that is what you have, but just sharing my experience. I have had chronic bronchitis since I was 4-5 years old, and my son gets the same thing as me.

If you are coughing up phlegm - go straight onto antibiotics! I used to try a million different things but in the end the only thing was antibiotics. Now I hit them straight away and it's dealt with much quicker.

I also agree with using codeine linctus if it is really bad - but don't take it for more than a few days because it is verrrry constipating and addictive and alround bad news.

I had a killer cough for about two weeks just recently, and I'm pregnant so couldn't take anything other than stuff like honey-lemon tea. My Oma told me to cut up an onion and put it on a plate on my bedside table. I was desperate and tried it. It reeked, especially when mixed with the Vicks slathered all over me, but every time I woke up at night the air felt sort of thick and didn't trigger my cough. (for me if I started coughing I would just keep going uncontrollably, sometimes even throwing up) I slept much better than I had been, and in the morning felt mostly human. Not sure if it was just good timing or if it really worked. But when you're desperate, you'll try anything!

[deleted account]

Lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and honey mixed in warm water or green tea. Tastes bloody awful but it shifts any mucus.

I like Little Misses ideas. Another one I would like to add which I try to do 3-4 times a day (when I have a sore throat/cough) at least because I am not the type that likes to take medicine, is to gargle with salt water. A lot of people can't do it because they gag, but if you are able to, the salt will naturally help kill the germs.
