When you are decorating your Christmas tree...

Do you put the Christmas lights on before all the decorations or after?
I went to go decorate our tree last night and half my lights were burnt out (lame I know) so Jordan suggested that I just put all the decorations up now and then buy new lights the next day.
I told him he was crazy and I would do no such thing (the lights HAVE to go on first) and then he called me anal.
So, how do you ladies do it?

Lights, then garland or ribbon, THEN ornaments.. Oh and I agree with, I forgot what it said her name was already (so sorry! just tired).. If you do tinsel, do it last.

DESIREE! I agree with Desiree :)

I put lights on first! Lol...that's the way my parents did it so I followed the way they do it. Lol. I don't think it really matters but if that's the way you want to do it than thats the way you do it!

We put the lights on first so it makes it easier to spread them out. It's also nice to have some of the ornaments right by a light so it can accented or easily seen. So by putting on the lights first you can easily place ornaments afterwards to have that glow.

If you don't put the lights on first you'll knock all the ornaments off. Duh. :P

Lights first! I have never seen a fibre optic tree, wow I lead a sheltered life! I wan't one, I HATE untangling lights.

I bought new lights this year for my green tree, I spent heaps because I want them to last and I wanted bright ones for my daughter. I pulled them out of the box and they are on white cords, they look crap. Not happy Jan!

I think I'll go buy a fibre optics tree this year. I'm over putting up and packing down the Christmas tree......does that make me a scrooge?

We put the lights on last if I recall correctly.

The lights go on first. Otherwise you'd have to move your ornaments to get them on without knocking things off!

*giggles* He called you anal for that? That's great xD

If my hubby didn't know what was best for him, though, he'd call me anal all the time.

But I'd have to agree, the lights should go first. They're all connected and it's possible that while trying to put them on AFTER the other decorations, some of them could drop and break. Would you rather take that chance, especially if you have some beautiful heirloom ornaments, or just wait until you can buy new lights and put everything up the next day?

I decorated the tree yesterday. Lights first. Definitely. Too awkward to put them on afterward and affects the choice of ornament placement. I'm on your side.

I have taken to decorating the tree when the husband is away so I don't get any comments. We both chop it down, he puts it in the tree stand and I decorate. Keeps everyone happy.

Oh that's no fun, Erin! We are going on our 3rd year with our pre-lit and so far, so good. I expect to have to add some next year though.

Of course lights on first.....what a crazy guy :p I have a pre-lit tree which is so nice, but I did have to put more lights on because 1/3 of them stopped working :/ And it's only a year old!!

Nope...lights first! But we have a fake tree with lights already on it...otherwise the pine needles are just too damn sharp for the kids to put the ornaments on. When they are older we might get a real one.

Lights first, then garland, then shatterproof balls, then the kids homemade decorations.

It is important to remember to test your lights before you put them on the tree. =P

lights first.

if you try to put them on after you'll skew all your ornaments or plain out knock them off.

plus your cords will show horribly

We have a fiber optic tree so the lights are built in.

I'm not putting anything up this year. But I totally agree with you on that.

Ummm, you can't decorate before the lights go in? How would that even work? Jordan, you so crazy! ;)

We got our tree up and decorated, Sunday, November 28th. I wanted to do it while Chad was home and able to help. We had an AWESOME family day.

lights first.

although this year, the f'n tree is fake and pre - lit.
Not bothering with all the decorations this year as we'll be moving around x-mas, or shortly thereafter.

always lights first. And always me, with no one else around to offer any advice or "help" untangle lights etc. after that I'm done, let the kids and hubby go nuts. The bottom 3 feet of the tree is always being re-arranged by the kids anyway. lol

Exactly my thought ladies!
Now I'm going to show these responses to Jordan as proof that I am NOT crazy and anal :P

Lindsay - posted on 12/07/2010

Lights ALWAYS first. Now we have a prelit which is amazing :) so there's no choice. But I'd say it'd be nearly impossible to put the lights on after the ornaments and I wouldn't want to risk knocking off and breaking the ornaments either.

Definitely lights first. Depending on where the lights are I make my decision on where to hang which ornament.

Cathy - posted on 12/07/2010

Lights before anything else because they require lots of rearranging to make sure they are evenly spread out. If the other decorations are already on then it makes it impossible.
Tinsel and beads next. Baubles and bows last!
