My daughter was born December 5 of 07 and is now 18 months old. In addition to momma and daddy she can say Nana, grampa which sounds like gampa , no (that is her favorite word to say.), and a bunch of other words that are starting to sound clearer each day. Like all the other ladies have said ,just keep working with your little one.

My son has an active vocab of about 25-30 words, and has used up to 50 from time to time.... but he seems to have lost some of them for the time being... I've found mostly that by really listening he can get most of what he wants across. Or I just tell him I can't understand him, and sometimes he just walks off.

(and it can be funny! for instance he says bad kitty and then chases the cat around the house while hissing at it!) (Or "I love you" gets a muah with air kisses back)

I've found with my two kids that boys tend to talk a lot less. My daughter (the older sibling) said TONS of words at 18 months. My son only says a few. It's a fact that women use about 1,000 more words a day than men. Keep trying to encourage him to say words. Picture books are a great tool.

My son says the basic mama, dada, papa, baby, bye bye, turkey, deer, bear, belly, happy, whats that, all those little small words, and he likes to read books, well really have them read to him but if it is a picture he knows he says the word, i am very proud but i wasnt sure if he should be talking more.

I'm so glad I found this! My son is 16 months (Dec 18/07) and says mom & dad. He has said bye bye, ball, water, gamma(grandma) and moo. However he dosen't use them often, our dr said this is fine once they master something they move on too something new. And pointng and babbling is communicating.

My son also says about 10 words he was born dec 18 but it is easier for him to say spanish words than english so I speak both english and spanish to him.

My little guy was born on Dec. 23rd. He says mama, dada, dog, shoes, and mas (more in spanish). We feel like he is a little slower but I know that it can take longer if they are in a bilingual household. But he makes noises and points alot. I'm sure in a couple of months I'll look over at my husband and say, "wasn't it so nice when he couldn't talk as much?" hahahahah at least thats what everyone tells me.

My first said 1 word before he was 18 months. After that he just blew up and by age 2 he could say almost 300 words. I wouldn't worry about it. Kids develop at different paces. Noah, born Dec 10, speaks many words. My 2 boys are complete opposites. As long as she is speaking and making noises there shouldn't be any issues. HTH!

It was so great to read about other moms concerned about how many words their 15/16 mo old is saying! My daughter is just over the 16 mo mark and only says about 2 words but I know a little boy her age who says about 8. I started to worry, but everyone keeps telling me she's doing ok since she does point at things and try to communicate with sounds.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!

your child might even be saying words but you haven't made the connection yet. we thought he was saying bye bye (which he does day) but he was actually trying to say our nanny's name which is Divine. I

My baby is on the same path to speaking as most of yours.. he was born mid december, and says mom, dad, and thats about it.. other than "wow" and what I am starting to think is cat.. (which comes out as "dat" when he points at the cat). I take comfort in the fact that he points and tries to comunicate and that his babbles sound more and more like words everyday.. I tend to think he is going to just explode with words when his time comes, just as he did with crawling and walking.

I don't think there's any need for worry. Two of the little ones I used to watch didn't start talking until 18 months and then were never quiet again!! My doctor wasn't concerned about actual words, but if my son was pointing to things and babbling.

I went in today for 15 month well baby... the ped said that at 15 months children should be say in 3-4 words in addition to mom and dad.... if you are concerned and you are in the US, contact your local "early on" for an assessment. The program is usually connected to your school district. It free! and it also interesting to find out were the little one is in comparision

It sounds like he's ok. As long as he knows how to tell you what he wants he knows how to communicate. Boys tend to take a little longer than girls most of the time. By 18 months he should be able to say between 3 and 5 words. Just encourage him to say what he wants and read to him to keep his vocabulary up. My daughter loves the books that only have one picture on a page so that we can teach her that word. She can almost "read" one of her books.

My son is the same way, he was born Dec 3, 2007. We just encourage him everytime he points to use his big boy words and tell him what he is pointing at or wanting. We have noticed that when he is alone in his room or when he thinks no one is watching he says more.
