What is the right age for a playdate?

My 4 year old son got invited to a playdate this weekend. The child is a friend from school. The playdate is from 9am to 1pm. I met the parents once at another child's birthday party but don't really know them. Is 4 years old too young to send on a playdate alone? Obviously my son really wants to go.
