My Son Ollie has just started to whimper in his sleep at night, not an all out cry but a quick 3-4 second whimper could this be bad dreams or just growing pains? It braks my heart to hear him and I would love to know if there is anything I can do for him.

It could be either. I kept my friend's son over night and he whimpered in the middle of the night. When I went in to ask him what was wrong he told me his legs hurt. So I gave him a little massage and he went back to sleep for a few more hours before whimpering again complaining of his legs again. I told his mom the next morning and she said he has growing pains. I've never experienced them with my daughter, but apparently they can be common in kids this age.

As for bad dreams. My daughter will wake up occasionally screaming and I'll go in and she tells me she had a bad dream. So I rub her back for a little bit, give her a big hug, and give her one of her blankie animals to go back to sleep. Just comfort him a little bit and he should be fine. Good luck. :)
