I am absolutely exhausted and need help lol ! This isn't due to my LO, purely my own problem. I have always suffered with bouts of insomnia off and on, and have had it this time for about 2 months or more. I will go to bed between 10-11pm, but can still be awake at 3 or 4am, which obviously isnt good when you have a lively 20month old bouncing around your bedroom from about 7.30am. I have been to the doctors to ask for help, only to be told they dont give out sleeping tablets anymore (they used to give me them) and to get more excercise (apparently being on your feet all day running round after a toddler isnt excercise !) I have also asked a pharmasist if there is any over the counter medication I could try, but he said no because they could make me too drowsy to be in control if my LO needed me in the night/early morning, but said I could try the herbal sleeping tablets. I just wondered if anyone has tried the normal Kalms, etc, and if they really have made you too drowsy, or if the herbal ones actually work ? Or any other advice is welcome . . .

I've been through it, too. Had insomnia after my son finally learned to sleep. My psychiatrist gave me meds that helped and also coached me with some helpful tips: 1. never lay in bed after 20 minutes of staying awake because you train yourself to not sleep in that environment. Instead, get up and make yourself do something boring and NOT useful until your brain feels tired (like reading a boring book or journal. do not watch tv. don't fold laundry because then you will start to think you are getting something useful done). then try again. the worse thing to do is lay there rolling around and getting upset that you can't sleep. 2. don't watch TV before bed time (it's too stimulating) and don't read in bed. You have to retrain yourself that your bed is the sleep zone, not the reading zone. 3. I rearranged my room to change up the environment and retrain myself to sleep. Finally, i found an herbal sleeping pill that was awesome: "Tranquil Sleep" by Natural Factors. hope that helps! I sleep great now...

I love Melatonin, it is what we naturally produce to help us sleep and they are super easy to take and I don't feel to groggy the next day. but yeah I would start with a half dose and see how it goes. I get terrible insomnia too and it is crazy cause I will lay down and close my eyes, then look at the clock and an hour will pass in an instant! but I have cut out caffeine after 4 and try to stay busy during the day so I am more tired at night... I feel your pain and hope you find something that works!!!

I just did a search and sorry no Restavit is not safe to take while breastfeeding! Oh no, sorry to get your hopes up, best try one of the other suggestions. :(

You may have to check with your Pharmacist as I'm not sure. Also after reading some of the threads I realised that this is a world wide forum and I'm not sure if Restavit is supplied world wide, I'm in Australia and its def available over the counter. Best to speak to your pharmacist. Good luck!

The restavit that Penny mentioned sounds good, Dont suppose you know if its safe to take while breastfeeding,? I only feed my LO (19mths) last thing at night and 1st thing in morning.

I have used Melatonin and it does knock you out. You may want to try half a tablet first and then adust as needed. I also suffer for insomnia and take half the dosage of otc sleeping aids. I keep the monitor on in my room and if my LO needs me during the night I wake up. You may want to have someone stay over with you first or have your LO sleep over with a family member or friend before trying anything.

Thanks for all the suggestions :) I have bought some Kalms (against recommended advice from Dr and pharmasist lol) and find they work some nights and not others, which is odd !! I have only been taking them for 5 days so far, so will have to keep going for a few more weeks to find out for sure. I do feel a bit more relaxed about them now, as my son has woken a couple of times at 5am and I have been able to sort him out without too much of a problem (5am is never a good time to disturb me - sleeping tablets or no sleeping tablets !) I am still finding that Im not sleeping until fairly late most nights, but the difference is that as son as I feel sleepy I am gone, where before it was almost like my body was fighting it

Hi, I don't get much sleep also and I have a 20 month old girl who still wakes through the night- thats me and some bad habits I just can't seem to break but anyhoo this is about you not me! A friend told me about Restavit which you can buy over the counter and when I explained my situation to the pharmacist he suggested I try half a tablet the first night and increase it the next night if it didn't do much. I think I had one tablet the first night and even though I still got up when my daughter woke I fell right back to sleep when my head hit the pillow which it would usually take me ages to fall asleep or I would just stay awake in anticipation for when she woke again. They obviously effect people differently but I would definitely suggest trying them as they are very light and didn't make me feel drowsy the next day. Good luck!

honestly i have the same problem and its weird it will last for a while then go away.. i find that my anxiety is worse when i dont get sleep but eventually your body will just force you to get it... i know that doesn't help now but two weeks ago i just slept on a sunday around 8pm put everyone in bed early and just laid there until i went out... it revived me for the next few weeks... i haven't tried the herbal stuff in pill form but chamomile tea has the opposite effect on me. it wakes me up like caffeine does. the other thing that does work is advil pm... its mild and you dont feel drowsy the next day plus it relieves my relentless back pain.

I've drank teas to help me sleep, such as Sleepy Time or Bedtime Tea, and that has helped me. Also, I make sure to stay away from caffeine by 4pm (the latest). I've noticed too, that a new bubble bath soap I use for my son, calms me and causes me to sleep really well just by merely inhaling it. It has all the natural herbs (camomile, lavendar, etc.). Also, I make sure to not do anything mind stimulating before bed (computer, reading interesting material and limit TV and night news).

I have the same problem from time to time. I know how you feel. I too used to take the normal Kalms and other types of sleeping tabs, and to be honest they made me feel hung-over the next morning, which in my opinion is worse than being tired. A friend told me about Nytol Herbal Sleep Aid, it smells kinda nasty but it works, I don't feel too groggy if I get woken up in the middle of the night and no hangover the next morning. Hope this helps, good luck.
