Hi ladies it's me again....Apart from the crying problem, my baby son likes to suck his fingers nowadays...his mittens are always wet with saliva and i have to keep changing the mittens.....is it normal for babies at this age to suck fingers?

We have 5 senses that we use to interact with our world. We must at some stage use all of them....babies that suck their fingers are discovering taste and feeling. It is their way of exploring and discovering. As they grow they will learn more ways to interact with the world. Today's thumb-suckers will eventually develope into "who knows what"....engineers...movie stars....backpackers.....etc...etc..

Rachel, My son spits out the pacifier and puts his fingers in his mouth ever since he discovered them. I think it's pretty normal, my first born on the other hand just loves his pacifier and still does, he's 2.

when my boy first found his fingers around 9 weeks , this was the first night that he slept thru the night well 6 -7hrs --its all soothing.
i read up on it and alot of Dr's recommend this vs pacifier just because pacifiers are thrown down and all over this dirty world , but my response is you really need to keep their hands clean too

And new studies also show pacifers may help prevent SIDS

Both of my boys never did... But my daughter loves to suck on her fingers (or her whole fist sometimes)...

Hi, my bubs is 4mths and she's always sucked on her fist/fingers/anything. She's been doing it more lately but it is the stage where they will stick anything in their mouths. I dont give her a dummy because i dont want her to have one but i give her a toy or a blanket and then she'll put that in her mouth instead of her hands.

Yeah my son is 3 months old and he sucks his fingers all the time. Then if you pull his fingers away he screams. Then you try to put a pacifier in his mouth he takes it out and puts his fingers right back in. His doctor said he is teething. He is constantly drooling to. She says that babies can teethe up to a month long before even noticing a tooth. So yeah!

Have you checked his gums incase he has started to teeth? My 1st son started doing this at 4 months, and Luke has just turned 3 months and he is sucking his fingers all the time, dribble everywhere and little red gums!

very normal they are discovering themselves. As my doctors says at this time I will start to see him grabbing for more things and putting everything to his mouth. Now is the time to keep an eye on him

Mine likes to suck his knuckles. Sometimes it's the only thing that soothes him.

yes totally normal. my little girl has been doing it for a quite a while now. she even manages to get her thumb in there to now. lol
i also have my own group called first time mums who are step mums to so if any of you are trying to juggle first time mum duties and step mum duties feel free to join

Yes!! my oldest did this from day one. and didn't stop sucking her finger until just before she was three!!

My daughter is 11 weeks now, and has been a major finger and hand sucker for weeks and weeks. I read in my what to expect the first year book that hand, finger and thumb sucking are completly normal and almost all babies do it, and then eventually stop on their own anywhere between 6-12 months. Its a soothing thing for them it says. If you dont want her doing it alot though, give her a pacifier to suck on alot.

My daughter has been doing it almost since birth and she will be three in June :) My oldest boy used a pacifier, my youngest boy sleeps with a pacifier but sucks his fist when he's just chillin'

If I don't keep a pacifier near by for me to whip into our 2 month old's mouth, he would be doing the same thing. He has been taking the paci since birth in hopes of keeping the hand an fingers clear. You can remove a soother but you cannot remove the hand.
It is all normal; to me anyway. Hope this helps you.
