First Birthday...

Good question. My husband and I discuss it frequently. One thing that is also difficult for us. We live in Ukraine. His first birthday will just be with us. No grandparents, uncles, or aunts to help celebrate except for birthday gifts. We will try to Skype (free internet program) on his birthday. He will get to eat ice cream cone for the first time or cake. Cool. That can't be too bad. Also, he can play with a balloon (with assistance). He will get the thrill of having so many present that he won't know what to do with them. At first, he won't be able to tell that Chrismas and his birthday are six days apart. When he gets older, I will design a homemade books with pictures and fun things describing his birthday. We will make it a tradition. Later, when he is cognizant of the actual day in relation to Christmas, we will have a party some time in early Dec. and celebrate that day with just family. Hope that helps. Just make up your own traditions and make it special- homemade is always good. Janette

my mom's birthday is actually on christmas, and she always said how everybody forgot her bday with the hype of christmas... but gmom always made a special cake and we sung to my mom.... when i found out i was pregnant, my due date was dec 19th, i was a little upset bc it was so close to christmas and was scared my son's birthday would be not as special because of the holiday- plus i was worried about how i could afford birthday parties and christmas all at once! Luckily i had him dec 8th, still close but not AS close.... i was also wondering what i could do to make birthdays special! I am an august baby so i always had pool parties and things liek that.... i feel like its so hard for the winter babies!!! good luck

My birthday is close to Christmas, and while I sometimes wished it was in the summer like my sister (she got to camp out in the yard with her friends), it was still my own special day. I had a party with my friends on whatever weekend was closes to my actual birthday, then Christmas was more about family. For my birthday, family would stop by with a gift for a quick visit, but didn't stay for the party (how UNcool would that have been to party with your Grandparents when you're 8? LOL)

Mines 4 days before xmas. For the first few years its not too bad because it will just be a family thing anyway but I think once she has her own friends and wants an actual party we will do the family thing for her birthday day and then a friends party for her half birthday to spread thing out a bit :)
