My son is 5 weeks old and has a horrible diaper rash. We've visited the Dr who stated to apply a thick layer of butt cream. But does anyone have any tricks that seemed to work better than others. This is now week 3 of the diaper rash, it's gotten a little better, but not complete. Thanks for any advice.

Try leaving your son's nappy off as long as you can, when you can...pop him on a nice warm towel to catch any wee. It has worked well for both my boys and if they do get a nasty rash which doesn't clear up with a bit of air, sudocream is very good too.

Hi there, for my first born we used Butt Paste - similar to Boudreaux's but made it homemade - we got the recipe from a pharmacist. For my daughter, though, it doesn't work. She is a month old. For her I use Thompsons Calendula Creme - you can buy this at a health food store. As well, a pharmacist told us, when its really bad, to use sparingly a combination of equal parts Canestin cream and Cortisone creme (1% stuff you can buy at drug store) - this works well too, but don't want to use too much.

Good luck

I dont know if its been said being I haven't read through the post but... my son had diaper rash that was getting worse with each #2... none of the diaper rash creams worked so I put on a layer of vasoline after EVERY diaper change... it cleared up and we haven't had diaper rash since I started. I now swear by vasoline and its the cheapest treatment you can buy.

Here's what worked for us.  My boy's rash was so bad his skin was beginning to break down and bleed.  First of all, change often, and use unscented wipes if you must, but plain water on a soft cloth is better.  Then blow dry for a minute or two.  Alternatiing hydrocortisone cream and lotrimin works well for yeast (it's what my ped recommended) or hydrocortisone and some barrier cream (desitin, a&d, vaseline, or my favorite Lansinoh) for plain, non-yeast rash.  I use lansinoh on everything!  Bug bites, rashes, dry skin.  The miracle balm!

Hope this helps!!!

Hi...I always make sure baby's super dry before using cream. Try corn starch to dry then try SUDOCREAM, it comes in a grey container with a red and white label. Works awesome!

Bourdeaux's Butt Paste and some quality time without a diaper on always works for us!

Hi! Sorry to hear your little one's got diaper rash. We just use plain warm water and and cotton pads to clean Harper's butt. If the poo's really sticky, then we use baby oil. Then we blow-dry her botton. I don't know if all of that would help get rid of diaper rash, but it might help prevent it next time around. Good luck!

Boudreaux's is great but it wasn't healing up my son's diaper rash. I tried A & D ointment and it works great!

Let him go diaperless as often as possible to dry out.

Use Corona ointment.  I swear by it.  My mom used it on me and I use it on my daughter, the diaper rash will go away in a day or 2.  You have to order it on line.  It is a horse linament and works great on burns, boils and cuts too.

Quoting Kelsy:

Are you sure it is a diaper rash and not a thrush rash? If it is thrush diaper rash creams will seem to make it better, but it will reappear. Most commercial diaper rash creams will feed a thrush rash due to the sugar in thebutt creams. The only thing that worked for my kids was 10 ounces water, 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract and 1 ounce vinegar put in a spray bottle. Also wash the area with plain tap water and letting it air dry was a help.

He has been to the Dr who stated that it was just a bad diaper rash, not thrush/yeast infection.

hey!! I know how you feel. with my daughter I tried 3 diff. kinds of cream but nothing worked. So what I did was- When useing wipes I rinsed them off with nice warm water, then I would let her air dry for a few mins that put a little bit of baby poweder on, I have been doin this for about a week and she is almost totally better.

Use a blowdryer on a warm to cool setting in between changings and apply desitin after every change. Unscented wipes are best, also.

I've tried the Boudreaux's Butt Paste and Bag Balm (that was the only thing that worked for my first son), I am breast feeding so he does have more movements that normal. At the slightest chance that he's had a BM I change him immediately, so he stays pretty dry ( and I have a huge diaper bill right now...lol). Just when it seems like there's hope and its starting to heal, he will have a couple BM's that just seem to make it raw all over again. In these past three weeks I've gone thru 4 tubes of desitin, 2 of A&D ointment and 1/2 a jar of bag balm.

uuugh. I know what you are going through. Basically what I did was for a week I (because she had bumps) I put on a layer of lotrimin Af and then a layer of desitin. After the bumps were gone, but the skin was very red and raw, I put on a layer of A&D first Aid cream and then CAKED on a layer of Desitin. It took a total of 2 weeks to do this and then it slowly went away. Oh, I also let her sit in a warm baby tub bath and washed the area every day with soap and water and then let her lay down on  a few layers of towels to let her area be exposed to air and give her a break from the diaper. I also used a diaper that was 1 size larger to let there be more of an air space.

I was shocked to see that it took acouple of weeks to get rid of the rash. Now I always put some desitin on her with every diaper change to prevent diaper rash.
