My lil baby girl has been starting stage 2 foods at 6 months. In the beginning she was breastfeed until she was 4 months and than went to bottle fed. She's almost 7 and half months now and she has 2 jar foods a day, usually any kind of fruit or vegetable and 5 bottles of 4 ounces of milk.

Hey Karley, took me a while to try and figure out a meal schedule, I had ppl tell me to give bottles with meals, and ppl tell me to give them in between. My doc has actually told me around 4 months to start cereal, at 5 months I started beginner fruit/veggies very slowly, and 6 months meats.... She said by 7 months or so for him to be on 3 meals a day with bottles in between so I listened to my doc. His meal schedule is:

7:30 he has 2nd stage cereal and about 5 oz milk

11/11:30 7 or 8 oz milk

1:30 Either a full jar fruit or 1/2 veggies and 1/2 fruit

3:30/4 another 7 or 8 oz milk

6:30 1/2 Meat and veggies and a lil fruit for dessert

8:30 8 oz before bed

Seems to work for me and him! And he sometimes has baby mum mums in between too. Oh and drinks water or watered down juice with meals.... Scared to try and kind of finger foods or chunky stuff yet as he hasn't got any teeth yet!

wow, after reading everyone's entry i feel like i'm underfeeding my boy. he gets 3 bottles of 6oz each (one for breakfast, lunch and dinner) and for lunch i give him 2-3 tablespoons of cereal, 2-3 tbls fruit for a snack and 2-4 tbls veggie for dinner and i give him breastmilk 3-4 times a day. i do have a big boy he is now 23 lbs and 27inches so i waited until he was 6mo to start serving him food.

Beech nut also mixes meat and veggies....my pedi didnt' tell me anything about meat. he just said i could give her anything stage 2. She is 7 mos now and eats 4 6 oz bottles a day (well one is nursing when i get home so the size is questionable). Then breakfast is good size bowl of rice or oatmeal cereal, half container of fruit, and juice bottle, then for lunch she has full veggie, half of fruit, and juice bottle.

Why are people so obsessed with books and doing exactly what your child is telling you. Babies need more than nutrients at 6 months than what milk is giving them. We started weaning my son at 3 months, because he was so hungry, milk wasn't filling him up and he was having an 8oz bottle of hungry baby milk every 2 hours!! So in our case, I didn't bother with books, I do what I feel is right for my son, I'm fed up with people telling me what to do with my son and how to bring him up. My son is now just under 7 and a half months and eats lots of different things, he loves fruit and he also loves fig rolls!! I'm happy with that, he's healthy and happy and that's all that matters.

Ohhhh no, you didn't actually say you weaned your son at three months!! No no no. I cannot accept that. Babies NEED breastmilk. They need it up til two years old and beyond. "Because he is SOO hungry" doesn't cut it. There are MORE nutrients and MORE calories in breastmilk than anything else you could possibly offer.

Sure these "babies for dummies" books have not always been around, and yes humanity has survived. But would you consider the fact that feeding babies early has only been the trend for the past few generations? With the surge of formula feeding came such silly notions as putting rice in bottles. And you know, while your mom or your aunt or your best friend may SWEAR that it does the baby well, many studies, recent, up to date studies, have shown that babies do BEST when fed breastmilk exclusively for six months. Yes, these books have not always been there, and not every one promotes baby's health (ie Ferber, or Babywise, have a search on the debunking of these theories), but there are YEARS of research put into these theories.

I just started giving my daughter solids about a week ago. She started on hummus and avacado, which she eats twice a day with sips of water. But throughout the day and night, she is still breastfed.

Gerber.  They have chicken, turkey and beef all mixed with veggies.  Or we'll buy beef or chicken with broth and add veggies to it.

Mmm, yum, my boy LOVES these. My doctor has also said it is time now to be introducing meat.

For breakfast my son has some cereal and rice crackers or a pablum cookie. Sometimes a banana too, though he doesn't like how squishy they are LOL. Throughout the day I'll offer him finger foods, and bits of whatever I am having. He doesn't "eat" much, but he does try! For dinner he'll have his meats and veggies, plus I have started a fruit dish, as well as a rice cracker and a little juice or water. And all day long he still loves his milks.

My Daughter is 6mo 1 week she was born3 weeks and 1 day early and weighed only 2.25k and has 4-5 5oz bottles she has just started solids she has home cooked veg and then a jar of banana cereal or figs and oatmeal and now weigh's 6.6kg. At this is age the milk is still the most important right up until 12mo the 4-6 months they say to introduce is just a guide if your baby is happy content, sleeping through the night and still gaining weight dont worry too much about solids, she'll let you know when she's ready trust me :-)

funny... here in nz you are frowned upon if you havent given them meat by 7 months. apparently thats when the iron stores they were born with, run out so they need to get extra.. all our child welfare companies encourage it. isnt it funny how countries are so different?

I live in Canada and I was told that they have changed the way theings are served.  They use to say veggies, then fruits and meats last.  But now they say meats first because they need the iron from it.  So we were told meats, veggies then fruits.  So it looks like NZ and Canada are going the same route:)

Hi Karley. Well the book says 3 milk bottles and two solid meals a day. My son has about 3-4 milk bottles a day and 1 solid or 3 milk bottles a day and 2 solids. However, we have to make sure that they continue to enjoy their milk for a long time :).

My little Gracie takes an 8oz bottle when she gets up, she sleeps from around 8pm til 8 or 9am, give or take. About 30min later she eats a jar of cereal w/ fruit. Around 11-12 she eats one 1st foods container of veggie and 1 fruit, then a bottle....maybe 1 more bottle in between but usually around 630 I start the nite nite routine and then 730-800 she will take her last bottle, if she didnt have her veggie/fruit at lunch she will get it at dinner...

She loves to eat and is always hungry, Ive been worried that she is eating too much but they say she is growing just fine. I have 4 kids and they all have been big eaters

There really good baby food recipes that you can find online that combine meat and veggies and spices.  I have a baby recipe book that has a lot of good recipes that I want to eat.

I have seen beech nut mix the two.

hi there.

despite recommended ages for introducing solid foods, i started giving my baby solid food when she was 3 months old. i knew she was more than ready for it so i ignored the midwives suggestions and did it my own way. she is now 6 and half months and she has around 3x 240ml bottles during the day and 3x meals per day. breakfast is yoghurt and fruit, lunch is fruit and biscuits and dinner is whatever i puree for her. she still wakes up once in the night and she has a bottle.

i hope this helps.

good luck

My Doctor told me that my daughter should only have 24 oz of formula a day, because she was going through about 2 cans of formula a week. We introduced more food, she eats 3 times a day now, and has really cut back on the formula.

Liam nurses first thing in the morning when he gets up. He has breakfast about an hour later, infant cereal (I try to vary the type) and 2-3 tbsp fruit. He nurses once between breakfast and lunch. Lunch is around noon, he has 3-4 tbsp of veggies. He nurses usually twice in the afternoon and has supper around 5pm. Supper is 2tbsp veggies, 2 tbsp fruit and infant cereal. And then he will nurse once or twice between supper and bed time.

My son nurses 5 times a day and eats solids 4 times a day. He eats the solids right after he nurses, except right before bed. So for breakfast he has 2 tbsp cereal and about 2oz fruit, for lunch and snack he has 1oz fruit, 1oz veggie, and 1 rice rusk, then for dinner he has cereal and 2oz veggies. He also gets a sippy cup with watered down juice to practice with throughout the day.

I feed Colton 3 times a day. Rice cereal mixed with applesauce or bananas in the morning and before bed, a half of a jar of vegetable and/or fruit, Gerber banana cookies, and yes Cheetoes (he loves them). I give him a bottle when he wants it. I let him decide when he wants one. Usually first thing in the morning, around 11am, around 3pm, and right before bed. Colton has just started eating more solid foods. He had some spaghetti the other day and he loved it. He also has started eating macaroni & cheese. I just play it by what he wants. Last night I was eating homemade chicken and dumplings and Colton had to have some and he loved it!! I think it is all up to your baby and what works best for him/her.
