How much is your child saying?

Is anyone else's baby not saying much? Karleigh only says Momma and Dadda, and even Dadda has turned into Da. That is all she will say. The doc said she is behind on her speech but not to worry over it yet. I was hoping maybe a few of the other December babies aren't saying much either yet. Thanks for the input.

My son can say mama, dada, dog, baby ... he doesn't say mama and dada much though. I feel like he's behind since my friend's little girl, who is a day younger, says so much but I'm just trying to work with him more and wait it out.

My little girl is saying Mum Mum, Braaa (for Brad), Nana (banana), Nan Nan, has said Bear Bear for her little blankie bear. I am a bit worried as everyone keeps saying she should be saying alot more then that!
She is pointing now and she waves and high 5's and claps her hands and kicks a soccer ball with her brother. She knows what you ask her, such as "where is your cup", "Where is Patch (dog) or Gogo (goat)", or "Where are your shoes"....etc
She is also running everywhere and climbing on absolutely anything and everything.
But I am definately asking the Doctor at her 18mth checkup!

Hi Katrina,

My Andrew will be 17 months tomorrow, and he says "dad", "papa", "mama", "up", "out" cleary. Any other words he tries to say are not really very clear yet. He signs other things like 'more', 'milk', 'hungry' but when we speak to him, he pretty much understands everything we say to him. I was concerned too, but his hearing is fine, he is very active and learns things so quickly, so after speaking to other moms I decided to not worry about it and just enjoy watching him grow. His ped said (at his 15month check up) that if at 15 months he said 3 words and at 18 months he could say 7 words then he is right at the average. Try not too think about it too much right now... :)

Aiden doesn't say too much either. The doctors have told me not to worry as long as he responds to me everything should be ok. I just have to remember that every child develops different but it's comforting to know that he is not the only one. lol He only says dada, mama, nana and bubba (my name for him) Keep your spirits up!

Hi, I was just going to start a new thread about the same thing except my son doesn't say anything!!! His comprehension is great and he points at what he wants, but any noise he makes kinda sounds like a 'caveman'. i was at the doctors last month for his 15 month checkup and my doctor informed me that my son has not hit any of his speech milestones and he is referring us to a speech and language therapist. If you are truly concerned ask your doctor to refer you to one, for nothing else than to put your mind at ease. But I can say that I know how you feel and I am really worried about my son! So I hope that helps a bit.
Meghan.

I have twin girls- one is a chatter box and will repeat (or try to) almost anything you ask her to- the other one says very little but is starting to try more and appears to read better. They both can read so many flash cards and either say or gesture what they mean. We have been using Your Baby Can Read program and it has really encouraged communication and their desire to understand words and sounds.

Aiden is also good at listening. you can ask him where his cup or pacifier is and he will go get it, he throws stuff away. He knows where his head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth and "dong" are. he can say dog and if u ask him what a dog says he goes "wooof wooof" we are tryin to work on the other animal sounds, ocasionally he will say mooo when i ask him what a cow says lol.

Pretty clear too which is funny. And wassat for 'what's that?' That's about it. He does talk gibberish A LOT and it is like he know's what he's saying but just doesn' make sense. Good to know there are other babies his age not saying a lot either. Haven't had an appt. with his doctor since about 12 months or so so we'll see now on Monday when he has one what she says.

Did your kids walk early or on time? My daughter is 15 months and isn't walking yet, but she's got a pretty good vocabulary and is signing more and more every day. I've heard that the late walkers talk more and vice versa--they can only focus on one big milestone at a time. I think it's funny that we all worry about the opposite problems. I worry about her being a late walker and others are worried about their children not talking enough. I'm sure your babies will learn more words pretty quickly in the next couple of months, and mine will be walking soon too. They'll all catch up to each other.

my lexi claire gets it honestly... she loves to talk... christmas day she said mickey mouse... she says mama, daddy, dada, BYE, daisy (dais), bath (bah), juice, cheese, water (wah), hot dog (ot dawwwg), sock (ok), shoe (loves shoes), mickey mouse and minnie mouse are my fav words she says, SOO funny... micka mowssse & minna mowssse (of course all of these words are in her own "words" but understandable). she knows cow says "moooo" and duck says "quack quack."
She also does know where her head, nose, ears, eyes and mouth are. Loves to blow kisses and give BIG hugs. Loves a cell phone and loves to "pretend" to carry on a conversation w/ you, or maybe that's us loving it, it's hilarious! you ask her a question or say tell daddy what you told me, straigh serious face she tells you something, but we have no clue what it is. lol
LC is a listener as well, for 16 months now she has been. she is very observant and loves to "do" she follows directions VERY well and we hope this is just a sign of being a GOOD BIG SISTER b/c her little brother will be here in 3 weeks. : )

I don;t know if it's a boy girl thing, but it seems to me that girls seem to talk earlier than boys. My daughter (who is now 7) had about 20-30 words at the age of 15 months and could practically hold a full conversation with me by the age of 2 years, whereas my son who is now 15 months old doesn't seem to want to talk. He babbles away and has a handful of words but isn't inclined to use them. But I suppose he'll start when he's good and ready. I can't wait though, I'm so interested to hear what he's little voice will sound like when he's talking properly.

my daughter at 15 months was such a chatter box, you could hold a conversation with her, yet my son (19th of dec 08) until a week or so ago only had 2 words mummy and daddy I was getting quite concerned myself especially in contrast to his sister, and I spoke to his nursery nurse and she said they have no concerns saying all children develop at different rates and quite rightly Jacob is much more able physically than Ellie was at this age,(who didnt walk till 17 months) she also said one day he will surprise you and strangely this weekend he has said bath, baby, daisy, more. no, milk and spider!!!

Now she say everything from Uh-Oh, ThankYou and More to Doggie and GoodGirl. Cracks us up how she loves to repeat what we say...for now.

I'm in the same pickle as you are. My Gabriel is almost 16 months and doesn't even say Mama or Papa yet. He will say Mama and Dada but kinda like a stutter...I asked my pediatrician and she said that it's normal in our case because we're teaching him both languages (French and English) and I had gestational diabetes so there's a known fact there that women who had gestational diabetes, their babies may speak later on. Keep in mind not all babies are the same, as long as your child seems to understand what you are saying, there's nothing to worry about.

She just within the last couple of days has started to try and say ball bye bye outside and a couple others. I do childcare and the 20mth old child and my child say and do about the same things. So I guess it all depends on the child. I would not worry to much just keep trying to talk to him and encourage him to speak. I've learned asking them ?'s or giving them choices helps with talking.

My son Rhys isn't much of a talker either, he understands everything though but is refusing point blank to talk. He can say Mama, Dada, Nana and Gaga (he's older sisters word for grandad) and ah dat (what's that) but that's it he will not say anything else. I'm not overly worried though becasue he has developed physically much quicker than most babies his age, he can kick a ball, throw a ball, climb and build with his blocks. I'm hoping he's speech will catch up sooner rather than later though.

she walked late though... she was 13 months when she walked on her own...

My son babbles constantly -- and I don't understand a lot of it. He can say mama, dada, dog, ball, no (very good at that one!!), yeah, he's working on bottle (bobble). But not a whole lot more. Our pediatrician isn't worried at all; she thinks he's right on. If I tell him to go get his jacket or his socks or his shoes, he'll go get them. When I tell him we're going to take the dog for a walk, he goes over and gets her leash. Those are all reassuring to me that he understands a lot more, and that it's just a matter of time before the words come flying out of his mouth.

I had thought that Finn wasn't saying much of anything other than Dada and occasionally Mama, but I've recently realized that he is actually saying a lot, I just can't understand it unless it is very clear context. (For example, I understand that he IS saying the words "thank you" if he's signing them at the same time, he's said "Gi-gi" while pointing at our cat Ginger, and today he was repeating "star" and "square when playing with a shape sorter.) He had an ear infection a few months ago and when we had it checked later, the fluid wasn't gone. Now he has had a double ear infection for a few weeks and after some fussiness I took him back to check on it today, it's still there. Now I'm thinking that fluid in his ears may be distorting the sounds he's hearing.

So, if any of you whose LOs aren't saying many words that you understand have also had ear infections, it may be a good idea to keep taking them back to check on fluid in the middle ear after an ear infection. Our old doctor's office (with ODS) never had us do that.

My boy says Mom, Kitty, Hi, and sometimes bye. He uses about 25 signs now, and for some of them, has a sound he will say too, not quite a "word." For instance, signing "all done" he says, "da dah!" One that I don't quite understand- he says "sigh" while signing "milk." LOL. Dunno where that came from.

Kids understand a lot more than they can communicate. As long as the understanding is there, the speech will (eventually) follow. Don't be overly concerned, but do continue to encourage speech. When the baby wants something, and even though you already know it, ask for clarification. It is frustrating to be unable to communicate your needs, so they need our help. It just takes some time.

Oh, and my doctor, at his one year checkup, thought he should be saying more words too. Some do, some don't!

On average children that are 15 months of age should be saying 3-6 words. There is nothing wrong with your child if he/she is not saying much though. Some kids are just in general more chatty then others. If your child is not saying 6-10 words by the time he/she is 18 months then you can talk to your doctor about it. More then likely though you just have a not so chatty child!

I have been told that they can only really focus on achieving one main skill at a time. for my son it's physical, throwing, kicking balls, climbing etc.
