my daughter has not had formed stools since she was 10 months old. we have involved the health visitor who monitored her weight an suggested we take a same which came back ok and asked the doctor who claimed its normal. i dont know any other 18 mth old with stools like diarhoea. we have thought about her food an drink. we have used cooled boiled water to make her drinks an kept an eye on food. there doesnt seem to be a pattern. how am i supposed to start potty training with that problem? any advice is welcome.

My daughter also has quite loose stools, I keep waiting for them to firm up, but they never have... but she mostly only goes once a day. Her diet is mostly good, and she's had no problems in weight gain, so to be honest I keep forgetting to ask the Dr about it! She seems to be a very happy healthy girl in every other way!

My son is 19 months with the same problem combined with a drop in the weight curve since around 8 mo or so. He has gone through every test that the specialists could think of (including the gluten allergy, stool samples, blood samples ect. even a sweat test to test for cystic fybrosis) Everything has come back negative so far except for being low on iron. We have met with a nutritionist and watch for triggers in food and no pattern to be found. Next week we go for allergy testing to see if he is allergic to something he is eating. If that comes back negative, then we will be out of things to do. Make sure not to simply stop any food group (such as assuming it is a gluten allergy) without getting tested for it. Otherwise your child (and you!) would go through suffering with a crazy diet for no reason. Demand testing (any and all related), and if results come back negative, then settle for the "some kids are just that way" answer.

Could be a lactose or gluten problem. Tell the doctor you're not happy and demand a second opinion. This is what i would do. Hope she goes on okay.

do you cut her juice with water? my g/f daughter got the runs cause she was getting too much sugar in her diet so for that reason we water down all our kids drinks 50/50

Funny to see this post. I am actually going to a GI Doc with my daughter tomorrow. She is 19mos. She was referred by her PEDS. She has had loose stools for about 2 1/2 months. we already ruled out a Lactose sensitivity. so we will see what the specialist thinks. We have modified her diet already to reduce fruits and gets no juice. reduced water intake a bit. But nothing has changed in her BM's. I am assuming the next thing will be to rule out a gluten allergy. I too am concerned about potty training. I can update you after our appointment. hope this helps.

my boy was having the same problem, from two months old. but after taking him off the milk he is much better, may be a lactose issue, i'm convinced thats my boys issue, especially as its in the family. my heath visitor said nothing except..'he may just be one of those kids who's stools are loose!' i felt like saying that's great you clean it out of his clothes 5 times a day and bathe him to go with. he won't drink cows milk either, so i'm concerned about the calcium issues, i feed him masses of fruit, but mainly because he loves it so much. :o)

you should check into a gluten allergy. you can order test kits online. you just send in a stool sample. it sounds like a classic gluten allergy. Gluten stays in a body for months. maybe worth a shot. was 10 months when your daughter started eating more solids and wheat, oat, barley, and rye (gluten) may have started?

my baby has never formed stools. He has the same loose diarrhea like stools and does it like 5-6 times a day, which also causes diaper rash from having to wipe his bottom so often. I have talked to the doctor and she assured me that a loose stool was ok and as long as he was still a happy baby and didn't have any other symptoms that it was fine. I have no idea what causes it....I did have to quit giving him apple juice cause that was making my life bad even though he loved it. It's just like any amount of fiber seems to trigger it. But as long as he's happy and healthy I just try not to worry.

I know apple, peach, and prune juices can cause diarrhea as well as some others. Some foods have really high fiber. Maybe too much fiber? Not sure. Hope it helps.
