My 16 1/2 month old son still takes 2 long naps a day, and sleeps thru the night without hesitation... Is this normal? From what I've heard, most babies give up the 1st nap at around 13 - 14 months old. I'm thinking, if he still wants to nap lots, why not let him? (I like the free time!) But I'm still worried maybe he sleeps TOO MUCH.

Until recently, my son has slept 12 hour per night and two 2.5 or 3 hour naps. Just this week, he has dropped his first nap. He would probably sill play quietly in his bed if I were to take him up to his room.

Enjoy your time...My son gave up both naps by 22 months and didn't sleep more than 8-9 hours at night. My daughter on the other hand sleeps from 9:30pm until 8:30am and takes a 1-2 hour nap every afternoon. All kids are different and if it makes them happy it makes Mommy happy.
Katy---Before you have to switch him to daycare or sis in laws try laying a blanket down on the floor at naptime and just say night night time so he will get use to sleeping somewhere besides his crib. DD sleeps in living room for naps so I can clean her room and put clothes away. :)

my son has never taken two naps, but he sleeps all night through and takes one nap lasting about 2-3 hours... I would just enjoy the fact that you're getting some down time, it might not last for much longer :)

my daughter sleeps 10 hours a night and a ONE 2 hour nap in the afternoon and thats it .... but then she'll fall asleep anywhere .... (just like her father)
she has never had 2 naps a day since she was 8 months old.

I agree with the other posts. If the baby is sleeping well, go ahead and let him. Mine still takes two naps as well, and I welcome it. He's such a busy guy and is growing so much, his body needs the rejuvenation.

Totally normal. Dr. told me that they need 2 naps at least til they are 18 mos old. Don't stress. If he is sleeping well threw the night still then you are good! Enjoy it while it lasts cause it won't last forever!

As the mum of a 17month old boy who has never slept more than an hour per sleep at a time (and usually only half an hour!) I wouldn't worry about him getting too much sleep. Mine has two sleeps still and he seems to need them, even though they are short. I've tried one sleep and most mornings he is really grumpy if I don't give him a nap.

Its obviously not affecting his night sleeping so I'd just enjoy it while you can - no need to wake a happily sleeping baby. Luckily my little one sleeps all night too, but I think all babies are different - some use/expel more energy than others so need more sleep. Best of luck with your little angel.

My son still sleeps like that ... has since he was only weeks old. He is honestly on the same schedule he was on at 7 months ... just more food and no formula! lol The pediatrician said more than likely by the end of the summer 1 of the naps should kinda just phase out of the equation.

He's gonna need to go to day care soon, (or else have my sister in law watch him) but I noticed he won't sleep anywhere but in HIS crib! Uh oh... We went out of town to see other relatives, & he climbed out of the porta crib, not sleeping till after midnight! Yikes, I'm just imagining the babysitter's routine... :-| From 2 naps to none???

I have been thinking the exact same thing. People keep telling me he should be only having one nap but if he is sleeping through the night I don't see the harm. My son gets up so early at around 6/6:30 every morning so I can see him being tired by 10 when he has his first nap. Just now lately he lets me know if he wants one by being super hyper around 9:30/10 and not seeming tired. Then I let him go until usually after lunch if possible for one good LONG nap. I find if he has only one nap and it is too early he is very cranky suppertime and needs to go to bed early. He only had one for three or four days this week then back to two yesterday and today! I am glad he isn't the only one having two naps though!
