To SIT or STAND?! That is the question...when potty training a boy.

I'm a single mom. My son, who will be 3 years old in December [of course], has been FULLY potty trained almost 2 months. When training him, I let him SIT instead of STAND to "potty". I figured once he mastered the skill then we could try a different position. Mmm...that idea did not work so well. Now, when I have him stand [on his step-stool] in front of the 'big boy potty', he will NOT pee. Instead, he'll turn around...sit down...then use it. Did I make the wrong decision?! I know it's easier to learn by watching but with his father being stationed in another state and currently deployed, that's not an option right now. Any advice on how to get him to use the potty the "right" way...or should I not bother with it until he's older? :-/

Maybe you could try letting him see other men in the family using the toilet like pop or uncles if you have any. My son who will also be 3 in December stands to pee now & we tried getting him to stand on the stool to do it at first but he found it a bit daunting so we took the stool away & he is tall enough to do it & luckily his aim is perfect!!!

As you said you r a single mum so he sees what u do and that is sit.... I taught my son to go to the toilet from day one of toilet training, no potty, he always sat not a problem, when he started daycare and the other boys were standing at their little toilets so jacob decided this was cool and he decided to stand too.... I think just let him go until he understands or mimics another boy, male, that might be school, who cares as long as he goes ah!

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I've taught my son to go sitting down too, & I think he'll just do it the other way eventually, I believe it's instinct! My mum said she did the same thing with my brother when he was small. And yeah, at least you don't have to worry about his aim!

Haha, my boy sits, too. And I am happy about it, because it means that (most of the time) there is no pee on the floor when he's done!

But have you heard of the fun ideas to help little boys aim? Like putting cheerios in the toilet and having him try to sink them, or painting a target inside the bowl... When I go pee it's not nearly that much fun.

I wouldn't be too concerned about it. I also trained my son to sit.
Once his dad gets home and can show him, he'll probably change his..tactics :P He'll want to pee like daddy. That's what my son did/does. We're still working on potty training atm :P
