TV Watching...

My daughter, Hope (almost 14 mo) will not watch TV. Once in awhile she'll tune into an interesting commercial. I don't necessarily consider this a bad thing-- and she keeps herself fairly entertained with books, toys and the dog's food :) However, sometimes it would be nice if she would watch a little bit!! ( for my sake! haha) Just wondering if maybe she's too young to like TV, and when other kids started watching??

The AAP reccomends that children DON'T watch TV their first 2 years. So no worries. Early TV watching has been linked to shorter attention spans.

Violet does not watch TV. I don't know why but she's not interested. Her sisters 5 and 2 watch a couple shows. Violet could careless and I am glad.

My son is the same way, won't watch cartoons, or anything. Except for commercials, or music...but once the show is back on, all is focus is back on his toys or things he is not allowed to have.

my son started watching as soon as he could see that far. we only watch shows like baby einstein or the nicktoons network which is all shows for children pre-school age and younger. it has really helped him developmentally and i love most of the shows as well. they also have really great ideas for games and crafts.

Sounds like lots of kids won't watch TV! I will say, Hope will watch the Home Run Inn pizza commercial--if she hears the music for it, she runs from another room to watch it!! Now if they could just play it for 30 min straight!!! :)

my son is the same. he is just not that interested in TV. he loves the Thomas the tank theme song but once it is finished he just walks off! it would be nice if he would watch it so i could get a break but i do like that he is being stimulated by other things. He is quite a clever and inquisitive kid for his age so i think maybe TV is just not interactive enough for him.

Okay... so we have tried to get my son to watch things such as "Baby Einstein," "Veggie Tales," and stuff on TV such as the "Backyardagins" (sp?) to no avail. He is just not interested! Nothing is "exciting" enough for him! He would rather, like your little girl, play with the dogs, books, and toys. Personally I think this is great, I'm glad he is not stuck to the TV all day; however, I agree with Nora up there that it would be nice to have a break and him sit and watch TV.

psychologists say that children should not watch television because the light messes up the melatonin and seratonin in their body.. the best way for them to learn, get stress out, and have an imagination is through play. I am a childcare professional and I agree with that for the most part... but I have to say that my children do enjoy a little television here and there... My almost 4 yr old and 14 month old really enjoy little einsteins, fireman sam, and mickey mouse club house.. If she doesn't seem too interested I would definitely try the baby einstein movies.. they are not proven to help children learn, but they do catch their attention! My 14 month old relaxes for about 20 minutes when he is coloring or painting!

My daughter is not very interested in TV. She loves music and dancing so sometimes she enjoys the Backyardigans but rarely will she watch a full episode. She is like your daughter. More interested in books, toys, dolls, shoes and of course the pet food!

I think that is really great that she doesn't have an interest in television. If you tried i don't think it would be completely bad. At 11 months my daughter started getting super excited with Dora the explorer and i have to make her watch it for the sake of giving me a break!! It comes on at noon and thats when i start cooking lunch.

If you want something more educational, baby Einstein videos are really great. Also, " my baby can read" is excellent (although very expensive), my daughter started responded very well to them as young as 6-7 months.
