My old Sony Cybershot quit me and I want to purchase a new digital camera. I think I prefer Canon and want to spend in the $400 range if possible. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The Canon Rebel is a great SLR Camera - I have the XT and we are looking at the new T1I. But if you are wanting a simple point and shoot and wanting to stick to that $400 budget - Check out the Canon SX20 IS. I just bought this camera for my BF for Christmas. It's an awesome camera. We are both photographers, but he wanted a new point and shoot. The new digic 4 processor is awesome. It takes wonderful pics even in low light. The color and clarity is amazing. You can not go wrong with this camera. The new T1I has the same digic 4 processor. That's why we are planning to upgrade. We took our rebel XT with a 100-300 zoom to the beach along with his new SX20 - the SX20 pictures ran circles around the rebel even. We were both just amazed. He took pictures right after sunset of a blue heron - I took the same exact shot from the same position. Mine was so dark you could barely see it was a bird. His looks like it was taken in daylight.

It depends if you want a small and easy to slip in a pocket point-and-shoot or a SLR cam.
I upgraded from Canon PowerShot A700 To Canon 1000D/called also Rebel XS
. And I find both great choices, even tho the quality of the photos of Rebel is better. But it's also a big cam to carry and not so easy to operate as the Powershot that has a video function with quite good quality for pc.http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro...

The Canon Rebel is a great starter camera into the DSLR world. But I would invest into the 50mm lense F1.8 for the clarity and detail you will want to see in your photographs. Best Buy is a great place to buy due to there warranty they offer in case of little mishaps that can happen to cameras with children around.

I use a Canon EOS Rebel Xt. If you can find a used one, you can probebly get it for under $400. It takes great pics and the lenses are not too expensive, especially if you go with Tamron instead of Canon.

There are other brands that are comparable to Canon, I know Sony came out last year with an awesome camera I saw a parent on the football field that was shooting pictures as good of quality as I was without switching lenses. I liked that. But I still love my versertality of my Canon Xti and for that I pay dearly. Shop around and feel the products in you hot little hands, you will know which one feels comfortable. Read up on them, the internet is a great tool to do research on products, but don't get caught up in buying this years must haves; last years are just as good.

I have a Canon Powershot A590 IS. It's an entry level digi, but it's amazing, it takes fantastic pictures, and you can interchange lens sizes with it. I currently use it to take pictures of my fiance on his dirtbike, but it has a kids setting on it that captures fast moving objects with less blur. Canon is an amazing brand of camera and it's all I've ever had for cameras.

I love my Canon Rebel XTi but then again I have all the extras. I started out with the basic package, but got so into I wanted to see what else it had to offer. It was the best investment I made. I took some Digital Photography courses at the local community class it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, where the instruction book leaves you hanging, but the internet explains alot of the camera DSLR lingo into our language fairly well. Consumer Report and make sure you go to the stores and play with the cameras you have feel them in your hand if you don't feel them then you will never know if they are the right fit for you.

I just replaced my old Canon Powershot with a new one. It was priced right at $400. I am very happy with the quality of pictures, various settings and user friendly. I love it for sports photos, portraits, auto and getting creative.

If you aren't ready for a digital SLR, the Canon S5 IS is great. I bought mine for $350 about a year ago. I believe they have come down in price and have even introduced a more updated model that runs about the same as what I originally bought mine for. It's more bulky than a compact but not as bulky and heavy as the SLR. It takes great pictures on the automatic settings. It also has lots of manual settings. I have yet to learn how to use those so I can't comment on them, but when I was researching, someone who was proficient in the film SLR cameras, but couldn't afford to get a DSLR yet, said that the manual settings made it very close to SLR quality. It also takes very good video, better than my JVC mini-dv camcorder, but I'm not sure how it compares to a digital camcorder.

If you are going for a digital SLR you can't do better than canon. But remember that you will be paying for the lenses separately. If you don't want to do that then a Casio is a good way to go. I have a 12.1 mega pixel Exilim and I have found that you have to have a high end Canon if you want to beat it.

I wanted a camera that had a good response time, could take action shots, and was small. SLR cameras are great when you have plenty of time to use it to get the greatest shots. You have to spend a pretty penny to get the best of those. I have a lot of great cameras, but they were just to big for some things. The point and shoot I just bought about 5 weeks ago is the Sony DSC-WX1. This camera is wonderful. It does everything I wanted for a point and shoot camera. I love it. Next time I will buy something to replace my high end camera. Cannons are one of the best. If you want to know for sure how they perform go to a camera store (not a camera section in a store) but an actual camera store and try them out. Also check out reviews on www.dpreview.com. It is a great website that is very informative from a lot of camera users (many of them are professional photographers). Good luck finding exactly what you want. Enjoy it too!

I LOVE Canon cameras. I would get the Canon Rebel Xsi. And I recommended buying it at well known store that has been around for a while (Costco is good and has great bundle deals). Be sure the camera comes with a warranty or buy one. And I would insure it through your home owners or renters insurance. My 2 year old put my canon rebel in the microwave and destroyed it. Now I am left with out a camera. Needless to say, I wish I had insured the camera.

Ah...you're ready honey! You are like me. I had the Sony Cyber, but I wanted to take the step up to pro level. I'm so happy I did. I spent $600 on the Canon Rebel Xsi, about a year or so ago. I love my Canon. It's worth every penny. I take photographer quality photos. People say "wow, take me"...its all the camera, haha! Try Canon. I know there are clubs - there are Canon lovers and Nikon lovers. It really depends on what you are shooting too. I've heard Canon shoots more people better, while Nikon shoots nature better.

I have the xti in that I really love. They do not make it anymore the one that took its place is the cannon xsi same thing just updated version and a little easier. My husband bought the xsi and loves it!

If you can swing it, I would definitely recommend spending the extra cash and get the canon rebel xsi vs the xs. It has a lot more features and is a lot nicer for the extra money you would be paying. I recently did a lot, A LOT of research about the canon line as I was getting ready to purchase a new digital camera. I finally chose the xsi and I LOVE it!! The pictures turn out great, it's easy to use, and still has a lot of features to play around with. If you just want a digital slr to point and shoot with, with the automatic setting, then the xs will work fine for you. However if you love photography and want to play with it, go with the xsi.

I bought a Panasonic DMC-Fz-28 Lumix with 18x optical zoom. It is the best camera I've ever had (and I've had plenty). Everyone remarks that my photos look professional. I even had a realtor ask what camera I use. I've captured wildlife by zooming in whereas before, they would have run away due to my needing to be too close to them. The kids photos are fun and I'm always snapping away.

Canon has the best optics and great lens quality; even other cameras with lots of megappixels - who don't have these other characteristics - will NEVER perform as well, and their photos will never be as clear. I have the Canon Rebel XS - 5 years old, but it outperforms SO many other cameras with more megapixels, etc.
go to the reviews at http://www.photographyreview.com/ - good luck!

I am getting ready to purchase a DSLR camera myself and I will only buy Canon Camera's. I have done alot of research & searching on the internet for the cheapest & best camera for beginners. I am getting the Canon Rebel XS from Ebay for $599.99 and it comes with three lenses and a bunch of other stuff. Make sure if you do look on Ebay that you are looking at a NEW Canon Camera & not a REFURBISHED one!!

I agree with the Canon Rebel, my husband has an XT. He had it before we were married. I don't know a ton about cameras, but have been able to learn easily and take great pics with this camera.

Look into the Canon XS. You can find it for just under $500 with a 18 to 55 mm lense. As soon as you to go an SLR, you will never want to go back. My older son has the older version of this camera, the XT while my husband as the XTi and since I run a business of doing professional photographs, I have the 50D. The only other lens you might want to get is a zoom lense that will zoom up to 300mm. There are many other lens you can purchase but really, these two are the ones we use the most.

You might look at Costco or Sam's Club, they often will carry kits which will include the camera body, kit lense and a zoom lense.

Good luck, please let me know what you decide to buy.

We purchased the Canon Rebel XS. It is an entry level DSLR. I have created amazing pictures with it and I love it. I would also suggest getting the 50mm f1.8 lens to go with it. It is really cheap and creates beautiful pictures.
