Pros & Cons-Staying INSIDE or OUTSIDE of the Park?
How long are you going for and do you want to visit any other parks outside Disney such as Universal Studios?
If you only plan on visit the Disney Parks there are definitely numerous perks to staying on site. Early entry being one. Dining is more restricted and pricey in comparison to outside.
If you stay somewhere outside, we've found International Drive to offer more than Kissimmee. More dining options for those on a budget. They also have I-Ride Trolley. It goes up and down the full length of I.Drive and you can buy passes for the length of your stay and ride as much as you like. A 7 day pass cost $10 per person. A 14 day pass cost $17.
If I go back to Florida in the future, I'd like to spend one week on I.Drive and do the Universal Parks, bargain shopping, take a coach trip to Busch Gardens, and enjoy all that there is to offer outside of Disney. The second week I would like to make exclusively Disney. Enjoy the perks of staying inside, early entry, down-town Disney in the evening, waterparks on a couple of lazy days.
When my family went to Disney Land we stayed at a "good neighbor hotel" which was right across the street, but it was annoying to have to walk all the way across the parking lot and across the street at the end of a long day...
Every time we've gone to Disney WORLD (mor than DL, even though I grew up in NV, our dance studio performed in DW multiple times) we stay on the park grounds (the All Stars Resort to be exact) and it is ALWAYS so nice and easy. It was way nicer to be able to just hop on one of the shuttles at the end of the day to get back to the hotel (though the lines to get on them could be pretty long).
My hubby and I are planning a trip to DL with our 8 year-old and we are going to stay at the Grand Californian Resort because we have a discount coupon that only applies to stays at the resort and includes meals and park tickets...

We've stayed outside of the park and it was a pain in the butt having to wait for a shuttle to get you back and forth. Our next visit we stayed at a Disney Resort Hotel and it was the best. You can just walk back to your room any time to rest or refresh or if you forgot something. It's also much easier to get into the park early to beat the crowds. We were at Disneyland and instead of heading back to the hotel in the evening we hung out in Downtown Disney with the kids and had a blast.
