Transition to a toddler bed?

Does anyone have tips for transitioning your child to a toddler bed? My son is 21 months and I need to get him sleeping in his bed because we'll need the crib for his 7 week old old sister pretty soon. We tried it for a night and the only way he would lay down and go to sleep was if his dad was laying with him (a habit I do not want to start!) otherwise he just stood at his door and cried. Help! We didn't have one bit of problem when we moved our 6 year old to her bed so this is new to me!!

I would suggest moving him to the toddler bed after he falls asleep. Once waking up in his toddler bed a few times, He should be used to it and will be more comfortable starting to go to sleep in it. Definetly keep dad away, that will not turn out to good ;) unless of course he is comfortable in the toddler bed as well. lol

we had to move my child to a toddler bed early because he's so tall, he figured out how to get out at an early age. we got some of those glow in the dark star stickers and put them all around the light on the ceiling. we read a book with as many lights on in the room as possible so the stars will "charge" right before bed. then, when it's time to put him to bed, all he wants to do is lay down and look at the stars. and while he looks at them, he falls asleep. we also give him some books, sometimes a sippy with water, and a few of his favorite toys in bed. we lock up all the rest of his toys and books in his closet so he's not tempted to get up an play with anything. since we started a few months ago, he's only gotten up once or twice.
