Hi, I really need some help on my eating disorder. I am 11 1/2 weeks pregnant going on 12 weeks this Thursday . I haven't been eating much meat, my iron has been really low. All I ever want to do is sleep & drink water all day. The smell of meat or knowing it's in my food. Makes me sick to my stomach. Is there anyone out there who has these same problems? What are some foods that contain iron? that doesn't have to do with meat? Please help.

I am not super interested in meat this time around so I trying to have 2 eggs every morning. I also supplement with beans, black beans specifically have folate. For Iron you can eat more spinach and kale, I like to run it through my food processor so it is pureed and add it to lots of things like spaghetti sauce.

Good luck

My prenatal doctor provided me with an iron supplement, and I've been told that sometimes women can go an entire pregnancy not wanting this or that because the smell or taste or even the sight makes them sick. I've found bagged cereals from walmart that contain a decent amount of iron, too, just read labels as you shop. I'm around 13 weeks as of yesterday and, unlike you lucky woman, my nausea trigger changes weekly, sometimes every couple days! They said this too is normal...

you can try a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses a day, taste disgusting, but has a lot of iron in it, my doc ok'd it.. it's a natural sweetner, you can mix it in water or other drinks or just take a tbsp a day. plug your noise though!

I've lost 8lbs due to morning sickness and my dr said it's normal...I just have to make sure I'm taking my prenatal vitamin for nutrients and keeping myself hydrated.
Good luck.

It's perfectly normal not to gain the first trimester. I actually lost 1.5 pounds and my doctor said I was welcome to lose more if I wanted as long as the baby progressed (I'm a big girl). You'll start to gain weight in the 2nd trimester when your appetite and energy returns, I promise. Hang in there.

with my first pregnancy i couldn't eat meat as it made me really sick so my doctor prescribed me iron tablets that also contained vitamin c (vitamin c helps you to absorb the iron into your body quicker) also he told me to eat lots of really leafy green vegetables because they all contain iron ...

When my eating took a turn for the worse, I turned to Ensure (or any generic nutritional supplement drink). They each have about 250 calories and contain boku vitamins and minerals. Also see your OB about an iron supplement (though unless you're eating regularly non-meats, I wouldn't suggest them).

Here are some good links with alternative ways to get iron in your system:

Hope you feel better!!
