Having issues with my almost 10 week old having a bowel movement. He passes gas all the time but never poops. And let me tell you he stinks. I've given him pedialyte and recently started him on diluted apple juice. He is a strictly breastfed baby and he eats normally. His belly doesnt seem to bother him. What am I supposed to do. I have used suppositories but I really dont like doing that!!!

Don't worry one bit. My daughter is 3 months old, and only poops about once a week. She's gone 13 days before with no bowel movement. I was concerned and called her pediatrician. Breastmilk leaves for very little stool, unlike formula. It is okay for breastfed babies to go 7 days with no poop. Rub on his left side of the belly, where is intestines are. You may be able to stimulate him. If you give him a belly massage and he reacts with pain, that's when you should call the pediatrician.

How long has it been since he's had a bm? It's normal at this age for them not to have a poopy diaper every day. Heck, my son only poops every 3-4 days, and we have some stinky farts in the interim. As long as he's comfortable, still producing wet diapers, and isn't waiting over a week to drop a deuce, I wouldn't worry. His body will work it all out (pun intended). :-)

As always, if you're concerned, if it's been over a week, then call your doctor's office. They're used to questions like that, and should be able to give you other suggestions.

My son did that too around 10-ish weeks. Doctor said as long as he's still pooping at least every 3 days not to worry about it. I've heard that breast fed babies can use up all the product so that's why there poop can be spaced out a little bit. It'll get better. My son does sometimes every day, but usually every other day now. He's happy so I can't complain.

I have a 10 week old myself and when i had her in for her 2 month checkup i mentioned about her having a hard time with her bm's and my doctor said to give her a teaspoon of karo in her milk but not to give her to much cause it to can bind her up but if she is at least going every 3 days she is fine. She to has bad gas and boy does it stink but like the doctor said she is probably just a gassy baby. Hope it helps.

to start make sure hes actually constipated. My 2 girls have had severe constipation in which nothing works second one is currently having lots of troubles and on prescription meds along iwth suppositories almost daily, prune juice, fish oil capsule, other juices, sugar water, coloxyl, lactulose, parachoc and fibre sure have you tried all these things? Its very rare for a soley breast fed baby to be consttipated this usually happens when a bf baby begins solids so make sure he actually needs to do. Usually they have a dirty nappy every bum feed until they are a few weeks to few months old then it slows down. You can use evrything Ive suggested for the constipation except fibresure and parachoc which are 12 months plus. Mix 60 mills water to 60 mills prune juice and add a little brown sugar and give it every day (I think 60 mills is 2 ounces?). Give it in 2 setting half the bottle morning half at night time. If he doesnt drink bottles give it to him via syringe. Normally the prune juice works well ..if not use apple jucie or orange juice, coloxyl softens it up. Only use suppositoires if hes fully constipated otherwise they dont work, if theres no enough there. If its too high up the suppositories wont do anything. Use vasline every nappy change

Its normal for an exclusivly breastfed baby to go for a week or so at a time between passing stools, as long as baby is not in pain dont worry. my 11 week old is exactly the same. There is so little waste from breastmilk. x

my doc and my lactation consultant told me that it's normal if a breastfed baby has only one stool in 7 days. If it goes beyond that, call the doc.

Take her in for some craneo sacral (sp?) massage. I have a friend who's daughter had the same thing and it worked brilliantly.

chamomile tea helps. i had/have the same problem with my daughter who is now 14weeks. the longest she went was five days. i started giving her 1-2oz of warm chamomile tea and within an hour she goes(most of the time). it also helps calm her. of course get decaf ...i make the tea as i were making it for myself. i let it sit for a while then i make a bottle of it and put the rest of the cup in a bottle and store it in the fridge so i have it when i need it next.

Sometimes apple juice can go the opposite way and children that are constipated can become more so. Go back to the doctors and have your child assessed. They can give you something called lactose which is purely a liquid sugar and is safe to use on babies. My daughter is 2 and she has it from time to time. She also had problems as a baby and was on apple juice and water to help her go. you may want to also look at your diet are you eatting a healthy balanced diet. try eatting more foods that are renouned for making you poop like garlic and vegetables and fruit. Even chocolate as this is full of sugar that will pass into your milk.

It is absolutely normal for exclusively breastfed babies to go 7-10 days between stools. Breastmilk leaves very little undigested to form stool. Gas just tells you that his body is doing what it's supposed to do. If you are worried, talk to your pediatrician and get his/her advice.

I have a ten week old breast fed baby also who was having problems going, I gave her pedialyte and it helped. I would stay away from apple juice because some people it helps them to go and others it binds them up. Try a warm bath and rub his belly. My doctor said a breast fed baby should go everyday but not to give her anything unless she's skipped 3 days. My sisters daughter is 3 now but she was nursed and had a problem going and still does, she never grew out of it. Bananas bind her up bad so they keep her away from those. It's a possibility he may always have the problem. I wish I had more input. But you will figure out what works and what doesn't through trial and error. I wish you luck and your little man too.
