We're working on getting Ben used to a sippy, and I was wondering if there were anyother moms out there getting thier Jan 2010 babies used to the sippy? What's your favorite brand of Sippy Cups? We love the Gerber Graduates Sip and Smiles, they've got a soft spout, don't leak, and they can get liquids out while gumming the spout. Anyone have any advice for getting babies used to sippys?

My daughter is using a tommee tippee flip and sip cup and is slowly getting used to it. I also use a take a toss cup which she uses at child care.

My son has been drinking out of a Camel Bac water bottle since he was 2 months old, Mom gave it to him in an attempt to hold him off when I was on the way to feed him b/c I hadn't started him on a bottle yet. The muscles and movements used are very similar to drink out of that as they are to breast feed, so he took right to it! (Of course, he only got a swallow or two at a time, until he was old enough for water regularly) Now he has his own, and he uses it without any problems. I plan on skipping the sippy cup all toghether, and just using that for water, no juice or milk. I'll use a regular cup at the table when it comes to that, he needs to learn to drink from one anyway.

I put my child to bed with a bottle sometimes but Im in the room and I take it from him when hes done. He doesnt hold it on his own yet, but I prop it cuz Ill do some things around his room while hes eating- but he wont eat if Im holding himand feeding him..its the weirdest thing. I know I know I know...never put your child to sleep with a bottle, but whatever works..im going to do. Obviously I dont leave him with it..but he finishes it and im sure he doesnt hve any left in his mouth.

Do people actually put their baby in bed with a bottle?

Lost said but a few things i've learned.

1. teach baby to drink from a full cup FIRST, so they know how . My 6 month old can drink out of a regular run of the mill cup with no issues (mommy helps by holding of course)

2. Introduce a sippy, however be cautious if you're breastfeeding, or the rubber tiped ones, as it teaches baby to chew to get liquid, this will result in very sore nipples very shortly!!!!

3. Juice is fine, in smal quatities, but you shouldn't actually water it down. this teaches children that even "water" should be sweet and they will come to expect it. Juice is juice water is water.

4. Baby shouldn't go to bed with a sippy, or bottle if it's filled with anything other than water, as they tend to fall asleep with liquid in their mouth as this will cause tooth decay (fomula, brestmillk, juice, cows milk etc)

5. Teeth or no Teeth, brush brush brush.

Holy cow! How times (and docs advice!!) has changed over the years. I didn't ween my children from a bottle until they were nearly a year old. No dental problems here - from either of my two eldest children. I plan to keep my little one on her bottle until about the same age as my older boys.

Same with advice on milk! I thought no while milk until a year - been told that one forever! But I'm seeing in here that whole milk is being introduced?!?! Wow! Just goes to show different places, different docs, different advice.

My Jenna turned 6 months on the 18th and has been "testing" her sippy cups now for a little over a month. Though, only watered-down juice in them, she seems to like them. I only provide them during solid food feeding times and not during formula-bottle times. If we're out-and-about, I will bring some juice-water-mix with us in the sippy to quench her thirst on these hot summer days!

Remember, everyone's child develops and learns to do things differently. My eldest children each had their own development patterns that were very different. What one did at a certain age the other took longer, and vice versa.

My daughter is getting used to the sippy cup. at first she had a hard time learning to tilt it up but she is getting the hang of it now. We use the Gerber learner cup and one by Munchkin with a soft spout and 2 handles.

I just bought our first sippy cup today and my little guy knew exactly what to do with it- but got very frustrated because you have to suck really hard. I tried it to then- and it was hard! I took a knife and made the holes just a little bigger and it flows much easier now. Before I go through buying another one...any suggestions of brands that flow easier (my guy loves his food and is lazy :) Wants the most amount of food in the quickest way possible haha) I thought the handles might help him hold it himself- knows that we will hold it for him and he keeps playing with his blanket....

I am trying to get my daughter used to it as well...she is pretty good at grabbing the handles and knows to put it in her mouth (along with everything else haha) but she has only 'sucked' a couple times...I have one pink and purple sippy with two handles - maybe Playtex or something? And I have one that is little and has her name on it that I bought at a gift shop...I think both are too hard to sip water out of though - so I will try your recommendation and see if she likes it better. So far I have just been putting the sippy on her high chair while I am washing dishes or something and I have let her get used to it and sometimes I try to show her how to hold it, or lift it up for her to drink out of....sometimes she only holds it or she will open her mouth so I will hold it for her...

My son just turned 6 months old and at about 5 and a half months I started to give him a sippy cup with just a little bit of water in it. He likes to chew on the soft spout, but isnt really that interested in it- but he does like the water! I guess thats good, right? I think I might get him a different cup to help him get better at drinking from it on his own.

My daughter, Chloe, just turned 6 months on the 27th. We've been trying the sippy for a couple weeks, but she really has no interest. According to her doctor, using a sippy cup is not developmentally neccessary. However, she will take small sips from a regular cup, which the doctor said is the main goal.

In response to Erika Lange, from everything my good beginnings home visitor, the doctors, and the nurses & nutritionists with WIC have told me this, 6 months, is the point in which to start weening from the bottle to a sippy cup. Preferably a hard spout sippy cup, as well as starting to practice a little with a small "normal" adult style cup. Especially if they are getting anything besides breastmilk/formula or water. Juice, whole milk, things like that should be in a form of cup at this point to teach them new skills versus letting them continue using the bottle. It is also the time to start using a baby toothbrush and cleaning their gums (teeth if they have them) and their tongue after juice & baby foods and at bed also.

So while I do believe that Holly needent be to worried or stressed I do believe she should work with her child on the sippy cup/cup issue and ween away from bottles. Though I would be extreamly picky about which sippy cups you get as, from great experience with raising my little brother who is 13 years younger (he just turned 11 & I'm 24,) the best ones & easiest to clean and keep from getting disgusting were the gerber ones with the valves like these. http://www.babyearth.com/images/images_b...

Way easier to get juice & milk out of them without a struggle, just soak and use the nipple cleaner of a bottle brush and there ya go!

My kid started wanting to hold his own bottle so I got handles for his normal bottles from my friend. He's gone off drinking it himself and now only does holds it at night when I give him a bottle in bed. I wouldn't worry too much if he doesn't want it yet.

Babies still have a strong need to suck at 6 months... Even if the baby isn't breastfeeding he/she should still have a bottle until at least 9 to 12 months according to the information that I have read.

Kalli-Mae has been on a soft spout sippy since about 3 1/2-4months, she doesn't much care for the hard spouts but she will use them. She much prefers as of the last month or so to use a small normal cup. Since I have a lot of little plastic juice cups it works out well. She wont take her juice or milk with her meals unless its in a regular cup. Now days she only gets a bottle if for any reason she has to take formula (which is rare) or when we're in the car or stroller and then its just water or pedialyte aka baby gatorade. I don't know what all advice to give on helping the child use the sippy cup. With Kalli-Mae she needed to be in her bouncer chair so she was leaned back, or laying down to get it at first and needed the handles but now she is perfectly fine with them. I'd say just find the best angle for them to hold it up on their own and get their drink as well as being really happy when you give them the cup. When Kalli-Mae uses her cup right she gets a really enthusiastic "good job" which makes her try again to do it right. She loves it.

I only give my son water in a sippy cup in between meals (for now). I have different kinds but he seems to prefer his playtex stage one. He holds a sippy cup just fine, and he rarely ever holds his actual bottles (I think its because he knows I will just hold it for him if he doesnt, hes a little spoiled and lazy, haha!) It took a little while for him to get used to drinking out of the sippy cup, since it only comes out when he sucks and he was sucking way too hard, but now hes fine and he loves it :) When he sees it, he grabs it and knows exactly what to do with it.

even if juice is watered down in a bottle or sippy cup it will rot a childs teeth. its better to just give your child there milk or water. juice is ok watered down once its only in a cupp because they drink it all at once not just sip on it for ages. but "your child, your choice" i always say. just putting it out there in case anyone didnt know that bit of information. my little girl was 6 months on the 17th and only holds her bottle sometimes. when she has a bottle she gets to sleepy to hold it herself she just drops it...lol but im going to see how she goes on a sippy cup this week... by the sounds of all of these very clever babies she should do alright! :)

I bought Olivia a Nuby she loves it, i first bought her one that was a hard spout but she didnt get on with it cos she has to suck really hard even i had to suck hard which would hurt the cheeks after a while so bought her the Nuby cup it transforms as she grows, it has a soft spout which she can bite and suck which is really easy, the lid comes off so she can drink it with just the cup and handles then take off the handles and it turns to a normal cup so a good long term investment. Hoping to buy a few more so i can get her to take her milk from it and get her off the bottle before she gets too used or attatched to the bottle
