My son is 3mo.3days old and last week I tried cereal mixed with his breast milk in a bottle and he got constipated (4 days). Not sure if it was from starting something new or if it was just random. So I read on the net to try oatmeal instead...tried that and he got constipated again (2 days). I heard to help things along try pear and plum juice and pear and plum food...tried that. I stopped the cereal and oatmeal and now he gets jar pears once a day. Not sure what to do. Trent was 5 weeks early so maybe its to soon?? I don't wanna rush it but if he can handle it and this is just normal then I'll continue. Also his tummy churns a lot and has since he was born and he has crazy nasty gas...should I continue food? ADVICE please!!!

Try only apple and white grape juice to help with the constipation. I had the same problem when I started my little one on cereal so I took him off completely until he became regular again and eased him back into it. (one bottle every other day, one bottle everyday, two bottles a day) Hope this helps!

most doctors dont want the baby on foods till at least 4-5 monhs old and breast feeding can just feed with out anything else till 6 months but cereal is the best thing i also have a three month old and we started him on cereal at night. he gets constipated for a few days which is very common and normal because there body is trying to get used to pooping out something more solid. it scared me at first to.

I started my son on cereal and breast milk when he was only 2 months so part of me disagrees that it's too early but every baby is different. Also if cereal and milk is a little too heavy for your baby, continue with the pears and try mixing in some rice with that. Hope it works oPr

I tried my daughter around three months and she didn't like it so i stopped. She will be 4 months on the 3rd so I decided to try again and she is doing great. My mom tells me all the time "i started you when you were 3 months and you turned out fine" and you will hear that a lot from other parents as well. the bottom line is. if your baby isn't ready then they just aren't ready, don't rush and don't let the opinions of others push you to push your baby. yes, many children start cereal around 3 months and they are fine but many others don't have a well enough developed digestion tract to digest anything other then formula (ie: that is why EVERY doctor tells you to wait until 4-6 months). Also if he was early he may take a little longer as well. maybe hold off for another few weeks and try again unless he is drinking up to 8oz in less then four hours (where my Desi was getting). There is also no rule anywhere saying that you have to give your baby cereal/rice. if they don't like it start with fruit and veggies and wait on the cereal until they are older.

I put my daughter on rice cereal about a month ago. She wasn't sure about it at first but now she loves it. I did it because I felt she was hungry so much that I thought it would help. I give it to her at her last feeding so she sleeps through the night. I wouldn't give him juice yet. I would talk to your ped. to see what you should do.

you should follow your mommy instincts and do what you feel is best for your baby. I will tell you though I wanted to put rice in my son's bottle (when he takes them) to thicken them up (he has severe reflux and I want to keep more food down) and the doctor told me if you are putting it into a breastmilk bottle there is no benefit b/c breastmilk breaks it down so quickly they really are getting any of it. If he had been on formula however she said it would have been fine at 3 mon. She said has been shown that waiting on rice cereal doesn't cause food allergies, if they are going to have them they are going to have them. They just don't want you using a spoon due to choking hazards.

It's only too early if your baby isn't eating it. My son is 3 1/2 mths nd he has been eating rice cereal since he was two months when I got the ok from the doctor. as long as he is drooling he should be able to eat rice cereal. I wouldn't try oatmeal yet. I just started my 15mth old on oatmeal, its a little too thick for them to swallow.

a baby's digestion track is not fully developed until 4 mos. old which is why doctors recommend you wait until after then. also starting foods too early can cause food allergies in the future. my boyfriend is insistent on starting Jade now with oatmeal and I have refused because of these reasons.

Don't worry to much about his lack of poopy diapers. Babies apparently can go up to 10 day without going. Seems long to me, but thats what I was told. As for the cereal, I started my daughter on it about a week ago, she is 3 months today, and there were no problems. You know your son best. Just hang in there and follow your intuition.

I am breast feeding and plan on continuing even after introducing new things into his diet. As a baby my mom started me and my sister on cereal in the first month and I'm all but 28 and in perfect health just like my sister. However if its to soon then its to soon, every baby is different. Today Trent has a wellness check and I'm gonna talk to our Doc about it.

if you are breastfeeding, it is sufficient for your baby until he is 6 months old. After that you need to introduce solids. I wouldn't worry too much about it now

My lo is 3 months now & has been on baby rice for about a week, she didn't have any change in bowel movements at all when she started on it. I disagree that it may be too soon, my mum weaned my brother at 6 weeks - he is now 41 years old & it never caused him any harm!!

too soon for foods. my dr says between 4 and 6 months so i would hold off for at least another month. and try not mixing the cerel with fomula, just water. :)

i am pretty sure its normal for babies to be constipated any time they switch to something new...whether breastmilk to formula or ceral to baby food. i wouldnt worry as long as he is past the tounge reflex thing ( i forget what its called). my dr. said as long as they don't go more then 5 days without a bowel movement or is passing gas then he is fine...i would still talk to your dr. though for your own securities.

It mayt be a little early to start him on cereal...I would ask what your Dr. recommends, but I am not starting my LO on food til at least 5 months.
