would anyone be concerned if you found that your 1 week old, breastfed baby was not feeding at the usual 2 1/2 to 3 hour feeding interval at night but appears to be making it up during the day with extra long feedings? i'm grateful for the extra sleep at night, but my concern is that she is slightly jaundiced and she needs to eat and poop as part of the elimination of the jaundice.

variety is the spice of life!!!

"most" babies arent all babies !!, the jaundice will take longer , but if you get a chance ,sit with him /her by an open window so baby can get filtered sunlight, that will help clear the jaundice up faster too,

as far as times, as long as baby is growing and getting enough milk , then its not a problem you can move tots schedule around , but youre getting what most of us dont, night time sleep!

I wouldn't be concerned. Although we think of babies being normal waking every so often, eating only so much...the truth is, as long as they are taking enough milk to grow and thrive, she is fine. Those "normal" 2-3 hour night feedings or "normal" so many ounces at a time are great if you have an android for a baby that has been programmed. Real babies are like real people, and they don't always do things when or how they are supposed to. My daughter was born on the 30th, and has been taking 4oz every 3-4 hours. When her sister was a week old, she only took about 2-3oz every 4 hours. Your little one knows if and when she needs milk...don't fret over what "normal" is...it's a word that the context will change a million times this first year!

As for her jaundice, it's not unusual for breastfed babies to take 10 days or more for it to clear. Just follow your pediatricians orders on what to do for her jaundice. Natural light is great at helping jaundice. If it's warm enough (75 degrees or more), you can sit with baby for a few minutes (no more than 10 minutes) in front of a window with just a diaper on, and that should help some. Be very careful, though. If her skin looks like it is not taking to the light well, stop. You don't want to over-expose her to the sun.

Breastfed babies typically need to eat every 2-3 hours; however, sometimes particularly newborns may go longer without eating. It is recommended you wake them to get them to eat. If they are just doing it occasionally, having enough soiled and wet diapers each day, and maintaining their weight, I wouldn't worry.

The 3 hour feeding schedule was designed for formula fed babies. Breast fed babies eat when they want to (for mine it's every 2 hours in the day and once overnight). Watch the jaundice to see if it gets any worse, but I wouldn't worry about the schedule. If you want more poop, you can always give your baby formula once a day. the difference in poop quantity is amazing.

Call your Dr, but mine told me that as long as the weight gain is there then the longer periods between feeding at night (or in my case early morning) is ok.

My son will do the same thing where on some nights will go 4 hours, but then wants to eat more often during the day. My son is also jaundice and I was told it will hang around longer when the baby is exclusively breastfed. My doctors told me not to worry that it would fade within in few weeks. Caden is 2 weeks now and he is still a bit jaundice. As long as she is eating well and seems to be gaining weight I wouldn't worry about not getting up as much at night. My daughter was BF and only got up once a night for the first 2 months and then slept through the night. Enjoy the extra sleep:)
