First cold/fever/cough

Ava had her first fever last Friday which turned into a nasty cough. It broke my heart to see her struggling to breathe and coughing throughout the night. She was quite a trooper through it all. We rested and stayed at home to get better. The doctor recommended saline drops and the bulb to remove snot from her nose. Plus they said to buy a cool mist humidifier. My sister says the hot mist is better as well as the vaporizer machine. Just wondering if anyone else has gone through their first cold with baby and how they handled it?

I put a couple of drops of tea tree oil in an oil burner to help clear the nose, obviously not on constantly but just for a few minutes at a time throughout the day. Also used baby vicks on his back, chest and feet.

the hot mist is good for winter and the cool for summer! You can put her in the bathroom with you and shut the door, blast the hot water to make it like a steam room, that helps too. The saline drops and bulb syringe work well too. don't be afraid to really put it up there to get the deep boogers, its sad because they cry but it helps them so much! My now 5month old's first "cold" was RSV and Bilateral Pnemonia when she was 3 weeks old. She was in the PICU for 2 weeks, and actually coded a few times! All I do is research what is best for colds now!

my son had his first cold at like 2 or 3 weeks old. i got worried cause i didnt really know what to do, i just kept sucking out his nose (i found that the sucker the hospital gave us works better) and i tried the saline drops but it was more of a hassle trying to get him to sit still once he has figured out something is going in his nose....just keep sucking nose out and make sure no fever.

Yes, just getting over it too. I gave tylenol for the first couple days as suggested by the dr to keep fever away. He never really got fevered but I gave it to him anyway as I hate the idea of fevers so it was more preventative than anything. Also, I thought that with all the coughing he may have a bit of a headache so it would help with that too. I was also told by dr to do the saline drops and "snot sucker" and cool mist humidifier. They don't reccomend hot ones anymore. First cold sucks. Good luck to you and feel better soon!! Oh, yeah. And I also nursed more frequently as suggested by dr. Just like for adults, plenty of fluids and rest!! Good for baby too!
