How do you get them to sleep longer?

My son is 19 months old. We just changed him to a regular bed as he was threatening to climb out of the crib. We also just started this week in daycare.
Here is the problem, for the last month or so he has been waking up promptly at 5:30 am. When he was in his crib I would leave him there and sometimes he would go back to sleep. Now that he is in a bed he can get out of he goes and lies by his door and plays and just generally won't go back to bed. Now that I am going back to work the problem is that I cannot put him down for a morning nap the way I would normally and he is so cranky by 8 am. He goes to bed everyday by 7 and really needs to. I have tried keeping him up a bit later but the over tired monster comes and he has even more trouble sleeping and then still wakes up at 5:30.
Any suggestions out there? Tonight I am going to leave a water cup in his room and see if that helps. Thanks for your help.

The last few nights I gave a midnight snack when he woke up in the night along with some water. He started sleeping till 7:30! I guess he has been really hungry.
