my daughter is three months old...has had her dummy with her practically from birth, even though she is young she searches for it after shes feed, changed, burped and all even wants to suckle when she sleeps... dont want her to be attached to it when she's five!!! you know what i mean??? was it silly to give it to her in the first place??

I have heard the same thing that it reduces the chances of SIDS. I have just reciently started giving my 3 month old a paci.. she usually only takes it at nap time or bed time. If I dont give her one she sucks her thumb till she goes to sleep.. All I can say is you can throw a paci away but you cant throw their thumb away.. LOL

recent studies show that babies that use a pacifer while sleeping have a much less chance of having a sids incident.

Hi
A dummy is a lot easier to get rid of than a thumb !
Don't be too quick to get rid of it as she could do what my son did and go to his thumb instead. And i cant hide that in a cupboard during the day.
3 months is still very young, i found with my daughter as she got more mobile she only wanted her dummy when she was tired, so i took it away the rest of the day and only gave it to her then, it was her comfort, to aid falling asleep.
And at when she was 1 we accidental forgot her dummy at my sisters place and went down with out it and has never had one since.
I Totally agree with you not wanting to have one stuck in her mouth 24/7 or still be walking around at 5 years old with one. but as i said 3 months is really young still.

I swore I wouldn't use it either, but I didn't have a choice when I couldn't see my son for 5 days after he was born because of complications with myself and the nurses decided to give it to him...ya I know, but he was use to it by then and I didn't want to take it away just yet because he seemed to like it.
Anyways, my son uses it during the day when he's really fussy and that's it. He doesn't even need it at bedtime...thank God.
A lot of my friends have just said that the dog ate it or it got lost and there's no more. They would be fussy for a few days but then for get about it. They did this inbetween 6 months and turning a year old. You don't want them to be on it too long becuase it is bad for their teeth I hear. They also delay their speech and we obviosly don't want that either. I now personally prefer my son to suck on the pacifier rather then his thumb because I can take away the pacifier but I can't take away his thunb..lol
My sons only 3 months so i plan on doing it sometime before he turns one.

GOOD LUCK!

I was totally against the idea of giving my daughter a dummy (pacifier) but when we went to the pediatrician, she said to get one to sooth the baby. They want comfort and unless you can have your finger in their mouth or teach them to suck their finger then a dummy works. The best idea I have seen is to see if they come off it themselves and if not you 'swap' the dummy for a 'special' toy when they become 'too grown up' for the dummy.

I swore I wouldnt give my daughter a dummy but at 5 weeks shes just wouldnt settle, now she mainly takes it when tired and even at bedtime! Im sure it does no harm, when shes a bit older you can encourage her to get rid of it, my mum was told when she was younger that the elephant at the zoo took her and that was the end of that! Sometimes babies just need to suck a dummy.. apartently its a comfort thing, if it wasnt a dummy it would probably be a thumb, and no1 can steal that lol
