yes i totally agree if the kids know you are joking then theres no problem my parens did we had no problem with it and i am one of 7

i think your baby is young. if older, than it might be a problem because she might get scared. but it is just playing around, so that's ok. if you, not your mom, are bothered, then i think it should be a problem. but i think you have to dictate how to live your life.

I think your Mom needs to relax for sure. When my siblings and I were kids we used to hear we were going to be put on a meat hook or sold to the gypsys and we thought it was the funniest thing ..I have carried it over to all three of my boys who are 21, 18 and now 13 months and it did not cause any harm to the oldest boy nor did they ever go to daycare or school and have any issues with inappropriate behaviour they knew it was just play

I agree, once he doesn't actually follow through and you are sure that he is joking I see no harm. Every parent have their own style; once its not an abusive act and both parties are happy. I think you mother needs to relax a little; you note her concern but at the end of the day this is your kid.

my three year old daughter plays 'wrestling' with her dad, yells out kidney punch, or punch you in the ribs then asks her 13 month old brother if he wants a knuckle sandwich, there is no malice behind it, just lots of laughter and giggles. I just make sure she understands there is a time and place for it. My Mum isn't real keen on it either.

i joke around with my one yr old son saying "got you" going to tickle you " he then turns around back chasing me saying "got you" so i understand that they pick everything up quickly but there still needs to jokes and laughter he loves the games!

My husband and I are currently discussing which jokes are appropriate and which are not - we're happy with stuff like "I'm gonna get you/ eat you / catch you!", but I don't like jokes like "Daddy's got you 'cos Mummy doesn't love you" - I think it's something all parents have to decide on depending on their own views and beliefs.

I've never heard of "beat your butt", so I'm going to assume this is an American term for a smack :-)

some people have this kind of sense of humor but i think one should restrain from joking like that with a child. they repeat everything they hear and imagine when she's 3 talking like that to other kids (or adults)

I jike around with my daughter like that too, by saying things like "You're grounded" or "I'm gonna kick your butt". I find no harm in it. I think Grandma's are over protective lol

My husband and I both joke around with our daughter like that and she just laughs about it as the matter of fact my husband and our daughter like to get into grunting matches cause she is always trying to beat her daddy and I wouldn't want itanyother way

my husband does this as well and I don't like it. Toddlers will copy and imitate everything they see at home and I don't want her to do things - even as a joke - in nursery to other kids.

I think its innocent and a daddy playing with his baby. My husband an I have a 10, 4 and 1 yr olds and we play like that all the time. I love to "karate chop" and "beat their butt". My 10 and 4 yr old are very respectful and know the difference. Its just play. :))

I joke around with my daughter all the time she is 13months. Thats why its called joking around. My mom thinks I shouldnt say some of the things I do but Im not serious. You know deep down if someone is joking or not and thats all that matters. If they where actually doing what they say then thats different.

I tell my daughter all the time "I'm gonna spank your butt" when we're playing around and I'll pat her butt... She knows I'm joking because she laughs like crazy lol my husband will chase her around saying "I'm gonna get you!" and she thinks that hilarious too...

I tell my daughter that I'm gonna beat her butt and pat her on her cloth diapered butt. I will also say as a former CPS investigator that No that is not by any means abusive and to think so is silly. Now if he says it and follows through then that action would be abusive.
