The thing about castor oil is that it is not for everyone. Every doctor will give you different advice and every woman will have a different experience. It's a decision you have to make for yourself, and by no means am I demanding that anyone go do it just because I said to. It worked for a lot of women I know. Some would recommend it again, some say it's worth it just to wait. My point is, when you get to a certain point and you're desperate to hold your child, you'll try anything. I do suggest asking your doctor first. My doctor said to go for it. She told me that the worst that could happen with that little castor oil is some cramping and not going into labor. As far as induction methods go, NONE of them will work unless your body and your baby are ready. Even sex, which can help soften your cervix, but still has no scientific proof that it will put you into labor. I will say that I was also told to try eating fresh pineapple and I ate about half of one and my cervix did dilate from 1cm to 3cm in about a day.

My point is, there are lots of things you can try, as long as your doctor says they're ok, but Rachel is right- you have to be prepared that it might not work, and it might not make you feel amazing either. That's the risk you take if you're trying to force your body to do something it might not be ready to do.

Don't feel bad. at 38 weeks you're considered full term and the baby could come any time between now and 42 weeks safely anyway. My good friend just had her baby the day after Christmas and I'm scheduled to be induced on Friday the 15th if I don't have her by then anyway. She said she got her trick that put her into labor from her sister in law and we have a few friends (There are 23 girls I know who's pregnancies overlapped mine, there's something in the water here!) who have tried her trick and most of them said it was a miracle. The following is her exact message to me. I'm going to try it tomorrow and we'll see how it goes! (I would try it tonight, but my cousin just had her little boy two days ago and I want her to have some time in the spotlight, too.)

here goes:

Okay so I got this advice from my husband's sister, who tried it herself the night before she delivered, she got the advice from a friend who did it for all her four children. Okay so 2 tablespoons of Castor oil in a full glass of root beer, and then eat two peanut butter cups. I did this at 9:30pm on the 25th, labor started at 12:30am on the 26th. I tried it thinking alright the worse thing that can happen is nothing... but it worked!

i am 38 weeks too and due the 17th. i have been trying to naturally induce labor, but nothing is working. i have done a ton of research to make sure things i am doing are safe for me and the baby too! everything i have read said even if you do try to induce labor early, baby will come when he/she is ready. so i will try some more when i turn 39 weeks, and see what happens! hang in there!! :) before you know it, you will be holding your lil one in your arms, and forget about all the bad things of being pregnant!! also, if you have any questions on weather it is safe or not to induce labor early, talk to your dr.!

nothing will help except having sex if you are not dialated. The sex will help soften your cervix so you will dialate. I really think the castor oil is a bad idea, too.

"Okay so 2 tablespoons of Castor oil in a full glass of root beer, " i disagree with this.. i tried this.... and instead it had me puking and on the toliet at the same time.. it was gross and bc of the carbonation of the pop and the oil... it upset my stomach even more. i was told by my midwife, that unless you ARE dilated... it won't help anyhow.

kelcie, im due the same date- 21st. ive been emotional alot lately too. on the 29th of dec baby gave me false labor... i went on leave from work thinking i would have had him days later... here i am, still no baby. i went to my drs the other day and im not dilated, yet his head is low. i have tried every old wives tale and nothings helped either. i am trying that primrose oil now... u place a pill into your vagina and it dissolves and releases an oil onto your cervix. it is suppose to soften the cervix not put you into labor though.

i feel for you and i hope your baby comes out soon.... i hope both our babies come out soon. just try to stay positive. baby will be here soon enough.

I know how you feel, I'm almost 39 weeks (tomorrow) and one minute I'm mad, next I'm crying next I'm happy. If your cervix is still closed the most you can do is try to have sex to get your cervix to open up. Otherwise until dialation starts walking ect isn't going to get you very far. I think at this point every woman is sick of being pregnant. My OB said I can start trying to do things to get her to come, but if she isn't ready she's not going to come any faster.

I am 38 weeks pregnant also and everyone wants to hurry up and have the baby, but he/she knows when they are ready, so you should hold off and just wait for the natural timing. Try to enjoy your free time while you have it - when baby gets here there's no guarantee you will be happier - the baby will take up sleep time and you will be even more cranky in the beginning.....try to enjoy the ride and have your husband hide when you are in the kitchen. :)

no way should you feel like a bad mom for wanting to have him a bit early!!!! etleast you haven't had any complications!! having a preemie would be tough! being at the end of your pregnancy always puts you in a MOOD! lol my husband just smiles and walks away when i am being moody!! lol

lol thanks i felt like it was gonna make me a bad mom if i was trying to get her to come out before she wanted to lol both my husband and i were premature i was 6 weeks and he was 5 weeks, i weighed 4lbs 3oz, and he was 5lbs 3oz, so the doctor figured that i'd have to be watched kinda closely but so far i havent had any problems, and the dr said that the babies head is right there but my cervix is still closed, im happy to be pregnant but it gets so frustrating sometimes when i have a farmer for a husband and he's really impatient
