I've read a lot of conflicting information. Is sunscreen a good idea for a five month old and if so, which ones?

yes! Anything with a physical sun barrier is best for babies compared to a chemical barrier, ie: Titanium Dioxide in the ingredients. They're usually found in a cream form Or pump spray but not the aerosol types. Unfortunately parabens are a part of sunscreens but organic or 'natural' sunscreens should have less of these and other unnecessary chemicals. I use one from Cosmedix for the whole family on a daily basis and a cream from Baby Blanket when the kids are outside playing.

My son is 6 mos and we took him out to the pool when he was 5 mos. I had him in a hat and one of those water shirts (don't know what they're called. It's kinda like the ones surfers wear) I used Aveeno baby, I think it's spf 50 but it does burn a bit if u rub it in ur eyes (like babies do) so I bought a neutrogena baby stick to put on his face and that worked good. I'm going to try water babies next because the spf is higher and you get more for the same price as the neutrogena and aveeno.

We use factor 50 sun cream on my son, and he also wears a hat if it is sunny. Bought the sun cream from Boots and is specifically for kids. I have got sun burnt in the shade in the past, so always apply it to him if it is sunny, even if he is just going to be in the shade.

We love California Baby sunscreen, the lotion is really good, but not the stick...it's very dry, and hard to put on, so we just use the lotion. It's SPF 30, so we reapply it often. We also put hats on our 5 month old to prevent her head from burning, I don't like sunscreen on the head, because she does have some hair, just not a lot.

Parasol is quite good as you only have to apply once daily. However I dont think any sunscreen would be good enough to allow your 5 mth old out in the sun to play. I must stress that Im irish so therefore the chance of burning is probably higher

ps forgot to say, waterproof sunscreen is best even if you don't go in the water it has more staying power. if you do go in the water always reapply when coming out, whether waterproof or not. xxx

Hi Melissa,
Yes! always apply sunscreen to your baby before you take him/her outside. We have made it a part of our morning routine and we reapply it liberally at lunchtime as well if we are still out. Even if baby is in the garden, make sure you have applied a very high factor sunscreen. babies cannot regulate their own temperature so young, so they can overheat easily, and their skin is very sensitive so needs to be protected with suncreen and appropriate clothing for the warm weather. use from factor 50 upwards, i also use it for myself! I use a Tesco's (supermarket) own, you can also buy good sunscreen from Avon and of course brands like L'Oreal or Garnier.
That story in the news about the baby with third degree burns is barbaric. There is no way a normal person would subject their baby to that : ( very sad.

I would only use a sunscreen spf 15 and under as advised on all sunscreens and from my pediatrician. Any spf with a higher content has alot more chemicals which is harmful to the skin and can cause a reaction. Just reapply every half hour. My daughter will be 6 mths on the 28th, but I am still using sunscreen cuz i use my baby bjorn and don't always have her in a stroller with a shade. California baby has good organic sunscreen that has very little chemicals in it.

Another little FYI, some babies have a mild allergy to sunscreen, so to avoid this put sunscreen on then before you go out so it has time to dry and then they can't rub it in their eyes. Another way to avoid this is to not put sunscreen on their hands or face and then have them wear a hat.

Just dont use any sprays because you never get a full coverage always use a cream anything is good just make sure its for kids and has a spf of 50 or more and dont forget to put it on the face and ears even if you make them wear a hat

Yes, put sunscreen on them. Their skin is so sensitive to the sun. We use banana boat baby, spf 50, as well as coppertone spf 60 for baby

YES! Sunscreen is a musy have for babies and for everyone for that matter. I use Banana Boat for Babies. It covers well and my son (who is 5 months old too) hasn't had any reactions.
