It's kinda u shaped and was orginally used just for breastfeeding moms, they would put it around their waist and it helped them support the baby.  However, now there are many different uses for it.  Feeding, tummy time.. we lay our daughter in it on her side since she has problems with reflux and she loves it. Our son (I had twins born on 9/16) loves to lay on his back init...it supports his head so he gets a different view from being flat on the ground. Oh and we have found that dogs absolutely love it to...if it is left on the ground they always curl up in the center of it!
