I took my son to the dr and he gave me some lotion. Didnt help. Then we went back. He told me to change detergent, soap, all that good stuff. Didnt help. Now he tells me to use Vaseline or anything that you can scoop out rather than pump. Now my sons eczema has spread like wildfire. Only places he doesnt have it are on his face, hands, and feet. Every where else is covered. Idk what to do... It's not red just little bumps and they dont itch. Also some of them look like pimples, they have black heads. I showed them to the dr and he said eczema again. Nothing is working, actually making it worse. Any ideas?

BTW: I have a condition called KP and my sister too. I got a lotion from my dr that has steroids in it but works wonders. Maybe something like that could help him? Inever mentioned I had KP to my dr so maybe he has it to. Actually I only went to the dr with mine because mine started getting really bad and spreading too. Hmmm

Eczema is usually itchy for many, it's even known as the rash that itches!

Have you brought him to allergy tests and to be assessed by child specialists in related fields?

And please do not use steroid cream that you are prescribed - children's skin is thinner and they are usually prescribed a milder potency and not to be used as frequently. It is also good for the doc who prescribed the steroid to monitor the child's reaction to it, something no doc can help if you're using it on your own.

Hugs dear, I know it's exasperating, my baby has eczema, but do see a good doctor with the right specialty and take allergy test - if something is continually triggering his eczema, then obviously the treatment you're applying won't be as effective.. hugs!

A link on the common allergens in children so that you can monitor on your own while waiting for doc's appointment.

i've never heard of eczema being linked to asthma. asthma is the lungs and eczema is severe dry skin, not an infection. i have eczema and have had it all my life, i do not have asthma. my son also has eczema, the signs began showing when he was only 2 weeks old, his skin was very dry, he had bumps, and his skin would even peel sometimes. i had to change a lot of things to get it under control. i changed to the aveeno soothing baby wash and aveena soothing healing lotion. i also changed to a detergent with no dyes or perfumes, not just for the baby things, but for everything. your baby touches your clothes, bed, etc. so if it is the detergent you'd have to change it for everything. also, the doctor recommended giving him fewer baths. he said if he's not really messy or doesn't have a very messy diaper, to try to go three days between baths because the chemicals in the water irritate the eczema, so of course fewer exposures to the chemicals will cause less irritation. also try switching to a sensitive skin baby wipe, the regular wipes sometimes have alcohol in them and can cause the skin to dry out. i know it seems like a lot of work, but anything that can keep your baby from suffering through the dry skin and bumps is worth it.

My son has eczema and I started using Mustela. A little bit expensive but I think its worth it. They have lotions and washes especially for eczema. I can only find it at Babies R Us. Toys R Us sells Mustela but just the regular lotions and washes, not the ones specifically for eczema. It has helped a great deal. When he does have a "break out" I use cortizone cream and that clears it up pretty quickly. Hope this helps.

My daughter used to have the worst time with eczema but I think I've finally got it beat. The doctor told me no soap whatsoever when bathing her, just water. Then I dry her off really well, especially all the creases where it was the worst and use Aveeno Eczema lotion. Also I'm really careful to wash all her new clothes before she wears them plus sheets, blankets etc. and I do a double rinse. For sunscreen I use Ombrelle and she hasn't reacted to that. I did try the Vaseline before too which my doctor recommended but that didn't work. Also, lukewarm baths only every second day because its so drying to the skin. And let them be in their diaper as much as possible to let the skin breath. Good luck, I know how horrible it can be.

At 3 months old my son started to get eczema, after talking to his pediatrician, we switched to soy formula. The Dr. stated that at 3 months old is usually when a child exhibits signs of a milk protein allergy and the first symptom is usually eczema. A few weeks after switching to soy the eczema improved greatly. we use aquaphor daily. I am trying to avoid steroid creams as they thin the skin, especially in young children.

POSSIBLE HELP FOR YOUR BABIES' ECZEMA - please read...all...- i went to an herbalist and they gave me red clover extract to put into his food - i give him 8 drops 2x a day and often mix a drop or two in with lotion i put on his rash spots...and lo and behold it has been getting so much better.

I think a combination of hydrolyzed protein formula (to help with any potential milk protein problems), the red clover (supposed to help purify his system, liver and blood, AND TOTALLY SAFE), and dr. bonner baby soap (pure castille, no fragrance) all seem to help...

My son has had eczema since he was about a month old- maybe even earlier. Nothing really worked for him. I tried hydracortizone cream, Aquaphor ointment, all natural baby lotion from the health food store, Emprizone... NOTHING HELPED!! it would clear up for a day or two, and then it would come right back.
His Dr finally prescribed a cream for him called Elidel- I got on their website, and it says that it's not recommended for children under 2, but since the Dr recommended it, and nothing else worked, I tried a little bit....
It really helped after just one use- that's it- I only put it on him once, and his skin is so much better still a week later! I also read that stress causes eczema flair ups, and that sometimes children just have it until they out grow it, and then it comes back when they're an adult- that's what happened with me.... I had it when I was younger, and then not again until after my son born!

Tepid water for baths, reduce the amount of baths-don't give him one everyday if you are, and lotion lotion lotion everyday all day--every time you think of it. Supposedly eczema is caused by food allergies, which could be caused by feeding foods too early for the baby's system to digest. I have eczema on the palm of my hands only, using lotion and reducing the amount of water interaction, esp very hot water, has done wonders for me. I really think you should go see a ped derm though too, regular ped are not specialized enough usually.

Eczema is not a skin problem, it starts in the gut and then immune system, and it is where the doctors should treat, but they are not holistic....

For BF babies I would check what you are eating.
For Formula babies I would try a goat formula or soy formula.
Often it is dairy intolerance, no test can verify intolerances, only allergies.

if you really want to use some thing safe on your baby skin,
check this website
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

Many products recommended by midwifes and GPs I would not put on my own skin.

My 7 month old son has eczema and has for the last several months. We tried lots of OTC and prescription products. We finally settled on Aveno Cream (not lotion) and Aveno baby wash for baths. We only use the soap every 2-3 days. Baths on off days are just water. We use the cream in the morning and right after his bath at night. We also use hydrocortisone cream (OTC) on the spots that are really red. It took about a week for the initial rash to subside, but it's much better now.

OMG i cant believe the dr recomended Vasoline. I have had it my entire life and my son has had it since he was small too. Creams and lotions has always made it worse. I use on me asnd my son, calomine lotion (wich to me isnt a lotion) Cover the area till it is totaly pink and its great cuz u can reapply it as often as needed. Dab it on with a cotton ball (do not rub) Nothing else helps me or my son. It is the only thing we ever use. Hope it helps

My six month old has it really bad. What we do is put a few drops of baby oil in his bathwater NO SOAP. It really helps moisturize ..then aquaphor lightly right after bath..you dont want to over do it..too much will cause it to spread worse..

hi both my son and I have eczema, when you run a bath for him add a a rooibos tea bag and and stir it around the bath, and try bath him in aquerous cream and rub him after his bath with the cream to it will work wonders also tea tree oil is great, I would not put any creams with steriods on him because it can actually damaged your little boys skin my hands look aged from streiod creams that I have used on my eczema. I also you will find certain foods and the heat can cause the eczema to get worse. Hope this helps :)

I used everything but it keeps coming back, but when i use steroids a little bit on the effected areas it works like a miracle( which i am trying to use as less as i can) . I also use Mustela products ( form France ) it helps a little bit to keep his skin soft. But i think that i will try also Oilve Oil with his lotion cus this is the only thing that i havent tried yet.

In answer to your question, don't know if its a special baby version but the ratio on the bottle is 1:1. The doctor said I could use it whenever necessary which seems to be lessening (either she's growing out of it or the end of winter is helping). Although she said not to use it on her face. Hope you find something that helps.

BTW, I just looked up KP. I think that's what I have! I think I'll start using her medicine on my arms.

Hi August, My daughter too had eczema it actually started when she was 3 months old we tried using a humidifier which did help for a while till the humidifier stopped working, and we've ordered another one, after that we were given Aqueous cream which we used for about 2 months which seemed to help a little till we started giving her solids then it got worse, anyhow at her 6 month check up we were given dermol cream and drops for her bath which unbelievably cleared up within 3 days, i've also heard to use Aveeno which works tremondously also, but please avoid using creams with steroid in it especially for a baby so young coz it thins out the skin...p.s i'm in the united kingdom ......hope this helps

Abby: I did have asthma as a child too so that's another possibility. There are just so many. Hereditary, apple allergy, plus my KP (general Dr), and finally asthma. Every single one of those relates to us. I suppose he's just done for... :(

Theresa: That medicine that your talking about is what my Dr prescribed me for my KP. That exact kind. Do they make it in a baby version? I have to take my son to the Dr tomorrow because he just had a horrible allergic reaction to apples. I'm going to ask about it. I did just read however that babies with fruit/vegetable allergies tend to have eczema because it's part of the allergy. Hopefully I can figure this out! Thanks everyone. Everything helps!

Our son has eczema as well and the Dr. says he'll grow out of it. It is dry, flaky skin and he does itch. We've been using hydrocortisone 1% for the itching and Eucerin Aquaphor for moisturizing. After his 6 month wellness visit, the Dr. did give us some samples of a steroid cream. It appeared to clear up his skin nicely but then again the weather has changed - it's warm and more moisture in the air. The cold air dryed him out terribly! Skin conditions are hereditary so that could be the root cause. Good luck!

eli too hads mild eczema on his forhead and sides of his face that he scratches esp when he gets tired. - we switch from california baby wash to the dr bronners mild soap AND put him on the gentle protein formula in case it was a milk protein allergy (web info dreived....not corroborated by dr. yer). once in a while we use .5% hydrocortisone but we also frequently use the little remedies lotion for sensitive eczema prone skin and cocoa butter or a homeopathic lotion with grape seed oil. not 100% gone but better. also only use lukewarm bath water....we'll see how things progress. found out husband had it as a child plus a milk allergy.... always feel like its my fault for not being able to breast feed after 1 month...dr keeps recommending aquaphor but i dont like its greasiness and petro chem ingredients....any other insights? best to all...

My daughter has eczema too. I asked the doctoer if I needed to change soap and the like and she said it wouldn't make a difference but perscribed a cream mixed with steroids. Triamcinolone in Eucerin to be exact. Worked like a charm. At first I used it every day but now we're done to every couple of days. Hope that helps.

My 7 month old son also had mild ezcema at 2 months, took him to the dermatologist and the dr. prescribed him with Advantan Ointment (face) & Aristocort (body, legs, neck and arms) Worked well for him as he doesn't get it as much now. The Dr. said the reason why he has ezcema is because I sufffer from Asthma, meaning my baby boy will most likely have it too! And that ezcema is a secondary infection.

Have you been to a skin specialist or just your general practioner? I suggest you advice your dr about your condition coz maybe your baby might have it too.

I used the ointments on his skin whenever his ezcema would flare up. I regularly use QV cream to maintain the dryness.

good luck!! Hope this helps :)
