my baby is 7 1/2 months old, and ever since we started solids at 6 months she has had terrible constipation issues...tried everything! it was under control for about 3 weeks, then she went back to huge hard lumps that hurt her really bad and only going like once a week...give her prunes, oatmeal, apple juice, other fruits and veggies that are good for this, and havn't ever even given her bananas, rice or apples (the ones that cause it) i also do mineral oil in bottle , and vaseline with a cutip up there...nothing is really helping! any suggestions?

OHHHH YEA......if I go one day without giving my son 4oz of prune/apple juice he will scream in pain while passing his stools, so I would put a container of Gerber prunes in every bottle until you see results, I usually do a prune bottle once a week for Kaj, but usually the apple prune juice..(I believe that's by Gerber as well) always does the trick

I predominantly breastfeed and give my daughter 3 meals during the day. I also had problems with her being constipated (pooping every 5 or so days) and having painful bowel movements.

First, I stopped giving her cereal. Iron fortified cereals can really back up a baby. Instead I gave her more fruits and baby food containing meat.

My sister-in-law said that "P" foods help make poop. Try feeding your baby Peaches, Pears, Prunes, etc. Avocado can also help things along.

If that doesn't work, try giving baby a warm baby and a light massage on the abdomen in a clock-wise manner. I also help my daughter by standing her up when she's pooping. For some reason it's easier for her that way.

Good luck!

nope, you don't sound bad! just discussing.
I disagree - if a baby is constipated because they are eating solids at an early age than they shouldn't be given drugs to solve the problem. They should just be given breastmilk and not solids.

bu evn milk cud mak a baby constipated. i tink it really depends on d baby!! sum are lucky nd sum arnt. bu i do agree bot der lil systems not bein mature enuf. bu i ad no choice.. lol my lil fella wudnt giv ova al e wanted was food of my plate. i dnt tink evn our bodies are mature enuf for sum tablets. bu at d end of d day, dese meds are designed for babies so dey cnt b dat harmful, jst lyk d tablets are designed for us!! im sry f i seem bitchy!

hey, i didn't mean only breastmilk.. i meant to type milk - as in formula or breastmilk. my issue is with feeding solids to babies too soon. they end up constipated because their little systems aren't prepared for solids.
Yes, some people can't breastfeed. I actually had an infection as well. I was bleeding bad and cracked - had to use nipple shields while breastfeeding for a couple weeks.
I do not agree that giving drugs to a baby is the same as if I take tylenol for a headache. Their systems are not as matured as ours!

i did breastfeed 2 began wiv bu i got a serious infection n both breasts so i ad no choice bu 2 stop.. stil regret it til dis day, so my lil fella s on d formula milk, bu e s allergic to soya milk nd normal milk, (lactose) so e s on dis vry heavy hyperallerginic milk so i was advice by d doc 2 giv em meds. unfortunalty sum babys av 2 tak dem. it snt wat any mother wants bu f nothin else wrks. we rather our babies not b n pain. its jst lyk use takin a tablet for a silly headache.

yikes!!! just read some of the responses you have already gotten. I'm sooo sad people are filling their babies up with drugs already.
:(
Your babies just need MORE milk and less solids!!!

Hi... my baby is 8 months old and hasn't had any constipation issue. It seems like it's a common problem with other moms. This is why mine isn't...
I live by the adage that a baby's nutritional needs should be met with breastmilk until 1 year old. A baby's intestinal system isn't actually ready for solids yet. We are following a program called baby led weaning. http://community.babycenter.com/post/a22...
http://www.amazon.com/Baby-led-Weaning-H...
Since 6 months old I have put pieces of food in front of her. She picks it up, plays with it, sucks on it, maws it. She gets juice out of it but hasn't really swallowed anything yet. Now that a tooth has come in little pieces of food / seeds have gotten in there but she still hasn't swallowed it yet. Around the time that she has lost her gag reflex and learned to swallow her internal system will be ready for solids.

I would not give juice. This is a high amount of calories without much nutrition (their bellies are still tiny at this age). To deal with the constipation lessen the amount of food she's eating and increase the breastmilk!

My daughter had the same issue when I stopped breastfeeing at around 4 months. My doctor recommended 2-4 ozs. of prune juice a day. We have been following that religiously for several months now and it has worked great! I notice a difference if she doesn't have it for even one day.

My girls had this same problem once they started on solids & their pediatrician recommended pear juice but I always put a little Karo syrup (dark) in their bottle & that ALWAYS worked. Laxatives are too harsh for their little tummies & can give them cramps. Try the Karo, it works.

Miralax is what my doctor advised for my son. I give him 1 teaspoon a day mixed in with his bottle and it is not a problem for him anymore. But miss one day and we are in trouble!

miralax powder... when all else fails! talk to your ped for dosing or follow instructions on the label. It helped us- I certainly don't believe in resorting to meds, but sometimes necessary. We just use it when we need it in his bottles. Hope it helps!

I talked to my pedi, and she said to give my LO 2 oz of prune juice twice a day. I've only given it to her once a day, but it has helped.

My 8 month old had the same problem. I notice when I give her peaches and prunes it helps her but most of all giving her plenty of water through the day; even if it is just little sip throughout the day. I give her some water while eating, after she has ate and in between meals (like I said even if it is just sips). I've noticed that has helped. It use to hurt her really bad as well and now she is fine. I've heard the rice cereal can also cause constipation. Too much iron can cause constipation so the baby cereals contains iron and so do the baby formula. My suggestion is just give her plenty of water and if that doesn't work contact your doctor. Maybe they have good suggestions as well. Good luck!!

Something I found that loosened my daughter up was giving her yoghurt.... You don't need to buy the baby ones just a normal full fat natural yoghurt (there's no difference). It's the only thing that got my little one past it.

Pear juice will do the same as apple juice so you could try that too. If you put karo syrup in a bottle make sure it is in the morning cause Ihad to do that with my daughter when she was about 2 or 3 months and she didn't sleep the night after I did it but it did help her to poop again so Iwas happy about that.

my daughter was constipated at 5 months (when i introduced food) and the dr. told me to give her prunes with her oatmeal in the morning...and lots of water. She drinks water in the morning and It took almost an entire month before her system balanced out. it sound like your baby is having a rougher time so i would tell the dr.

1/4 teaspoon of light karo syrup in 2 bottles a day for about 3 days will wake up her intestines.

When my son first started on jar food, he was having the same problem. We backed off the on solids for a while. Now I make sure he has some prunes throughout the day and he is much better. It may just take some time for her digestive system to get used to foods. My doctor also suggested increasing his fluids - formula, a little water or apple juice.

Give her tap water in a bottle once a day. It's good for them, especially if it's fluoridated because that helps with tooth development. Having the extra water helps the gut pull water in and soften the stool. If that doesn't work after a week, then there are suppositories on the market you can try, but I'd get the doctor's advice first.

Yes also having issues and have also tried everything. I have now got my little boy on 5ml lactulose every night and am giving him fennel tea to drink in the day time it really seems to keep him moving. I have also taken him to a Cranial Osteopath who has helped a great deal as his diaphgram was tight meaning he was not able to push properly!. Good luck, ps apple and prune or raisin puree work as well, apple does not block them - quite the opposite actually!.

Hi
I just used the purity prunes - just one spoon in the evening before her dinner and it worked like a charm. They dont need much. Also push up her fruit intake - purity ones as fruit also helps.
Good luck as i know what it is like - Bellas poop was rock hard and dry - must of been so painful !
All the best!

My daughter has had issues with this as well. We give her 3-5 prunes a day (she loves them) and that seems to help. Also, she has water during the day as well.

my daughter was constipated as well, the doc prescribed her lacutose and told me to give her lots of water. This worked but it came back a couple of weeks later. Thought it was solids too but have since changed her formula and she hasn't had a problem since. I don't know if your bub is breast or bottle fed but if she is on the bottle I would def try that.

i have had to start giving Alana miralax. 17 grams in 8 oz of water or juice then give her 1-2 ounces up to twice a day. Alanas pediatrician put her on it at 4 months and i only use it once or twice a week now... when it starts getting really hard. Also, you could do a soap enema... but that can be REALLY messy!!!

I'm sorry your baby has to go through this. My oldest two had this problem when they started drinking cows milk. I used to mix prune juice and milk together and that helped somewhat. The only thing that really worked with us was giving them more solid food, water, and juice, and less milk. Your baby is 7mos so you can't cut down on formula, but maybe if you feed her her solids first and formula last, making sure that she's getting enough formula, she'll drink somewhat less. It's milk solids and iron that can cause that bad constipation. Oh, yeah, and apple juice can loosen the bowels, so you can also try that.

[deleted account]

Water, water, water....make sure she's drinking lots of water. A beaker of water should be available to her all through the day and with every meal. Freddie had the same problem as I only gave him water at meals (breastfeeding rest of the time). Once I've had water available all day, he's fine.

My daughter was constipated, she is 8 months and was like this starting at 5 months...all it took was about 1-2 tablespoons of baby jar prunes, per meal and she poops like a champ. Good luck!!

[deleted account]

My son was really constipated at around 5 months. His doctor ended up prescribing him a laxative powder when nothing else worked. He took it for about two weeks and hasn't needed it since. I would definitely call your doctor, and make sure you tell them everything that you've tried.

my daughter was horribly constipated we had to change her entire solid food diet: she only eats prunes, green beans, peas, pears and Oatmeal NOTHING ELSE and we give her 3 oz of prune juice mixed with 1 oz of apple juice and thats all she's been eating for about a month and she no longer has constipation issues at all

[deleted account]

It may simply just take time...

Bute, I also heard that massaging techniques for babies could work wonders too. There are books that you could get for that!

You may want to talk to your doctor. Mine isn't having the hard lumps, but is just having small poops. Not hard, not completely soft. They aren't normal for him. I've been trying apple prune juice, but i'm going to talk to the doctor and see if i can give him some miralax with a bottle tomorrow.
