my daughter started rice cereal and then other things such as pureed fruit and vegies at 3 months and she has never been happier.... i would follow your mothers instinct and do what your own heart tells you and not worry to much about the rules of 4- 6 months as i know alot of bubs that have been started way younger then mine and they are all great!! its a personal preference i think so do what you feel is right.. :)

for those babies who are not ready for cereal in a spoon, you need to mix a little in their bottle. My son will not take the cereal from a spoon because he is used to the sucking motion to get his milk from the bottle. He is 4 1/2 months old and has been having cereal in his bottle before bedtime for about a month and has slept ALL night since I started this. He now has some in a few bottle during the day too because he just seemed to not be getting full on milk only. This is my second child and I did the same with my daughter........same results with her. Restful nights! :)

We tried to give Craig cereal in his bottle but he wasn't satisfied so @ 3 moths we had to start spoon feeding him the cereal@ 31/2 we added the veggie to the cereal. At his 4 month check up his weight is perfectly in the middle for his age group. The DR. told us to go ahead and move onto adding the fruits making ssure to give him the same thing for 3 days for allergy purposes. By the time he is 6 months he is suppose to have cereal and fruit for brkst, a jar veggie at lunch and a jar of fruit and a veggie for dinner. we just started adding brkst this morning we will see how it goes.

You can get rice cereal that is extremely nutritious and can be mixed with breast milk or formula.

Rice has NO nutritional value. That is why it should not be given so early. You are just feeding your child empty calories, and if you feed a very young infant enough of those empty calories, you will be litterally starving your child. If the child is pushing their tongue forward and pushing food out of their mouths, they are not ready for solids yet. Wait and try again.

The best advice though is go with what you feel is best for your child. No doctor knows your child better than you. You carried them. You take care of them. You have done everything for them since they were conceived. Remember though at any time you start them if you use a spoon... they are used to the bottle they have the natural reaction to use the tongue and push it out. Practice. The more they use the spoon the better they learn to control the tongue and not push out the food.

Um... actually rice cereal can be started at any time. I have been mixing in my son's bottle since he was a month old. It helps him feel full because he would eat 24/7 if you would let him. It's able to be started at 4 months of age. They aren't going to like it at first it's new. They will spit anything out. That's why they tell you to stick with it for 5 days plus to make sure they don't have an allergic reaction. You can also start oatmeal and yellowish 1st foods. And work your way to the green ones. But it's best if you stick with the rule of 5. 5 days of each food by themselves so if there is a reaction you can pinpoint the cause easier.

Nope.No solids here. We did try, but he's just not ready. He still pushes it out with his tongue.

I have started my daughter with rice cereal, but am just putting a little in her bedtime bottle. I started a couple of nights ago. She likes it! She is over 17 pounds and will be 5 months in a week. I won't give her anything else until 6 months as per my doctor. Hope this helps :)

I was hoping to wait as long as possible cause it just seems like a hassle, but my little guy (born on the 14th) is so hungry lately (I almost bought formula to supplement my breastmilk), and he eyes my food very closely now, so we're going to start some rice milk on Saturday!

i started my daughter off at 2 1/2 months with cereal that was thin and she drank it out of a bottle. she now eats a generous portion of cereal in the evening and has at least one serving of fruit and we are working on the veggies, tho she doesnt like them as well. most babies will push the food out with their tongues a few times as they are not used to solids, but my daughter is 4 1/2 months now and eats like a champ. it just takes a little while. just read the cues from ur baby and u will know when he's ready

My husband and I tried it when our daughter was 4 months old, didn't like it. So we stopped and now just trying it again at 5 months and she's liking it much better! She still doesn't do a great job at eating the rice cereal but she's opening her mouth and moving the food around with her tongue, so its a start! :)

My daughter loves her cereal at night. I mix it with some of her formula and give it to her in the bottle at night before she goes to sleep. She finally sleeps through the night again! She refuses the spoon though, that's why I postponed the vegetables.

My son who has just turned 5months has been eating rice cereal 1-2 times per day for the past two weeks. He absolutely loves it, he sees his spoon coming and his eyes go wide and he opens his mouth up and waits for me to pop it in his mouth. I tried him a few days ago on a bit of stewed apple but he is a bit more hesitant about it so will wait a weeks or so and try again. They know when they're ready for something new.

My daughter started on cereals this week, but she has been on veggies for a couple weeks already. If you are trying to figure out if your baby is ready, talk to your doc. Every baby is different. She was about 3 months and 3 weeks when the dr. told us to start them.

We haven't started yet, but are planning to in the next couple of weeks. We waited for the 6 month mark as recommended by our ped b/c our little guy was at the 25th percentile for weight & not showing any interest in food. That has changed recently & it will be right on the mark for his 6th month.

Oh, and my doctor said that they are telling parents to NOT hold off on any foods. The earlier you introduce a food, the less likely they will be allergic. This is something new.

Yes, we started at four months. If I don't go fast enough with the spoon he whines. We started with rice cereal and oatmeal. Be careful because rice cereal can bind. I started him on yogurt (Plain no sugar) because of being on an antibiotic. I've added bananas, apples, pears, sweet peas, carrots, and avacado. He was born Sept. 8th.

hi, my daughter was 3 months when my doctor told me to start her on cereals. she was demanding alot of milk like 10oz a feed. different doctors seem to be saying different things. i have leadrnt that your baby will tell you when he/she is ready for solids/cereals etc. do what you think is right for your baby. the proffessionals are constantly changing the age they should eat solids etc, they dont even know. so go off what you think is right for your baby!! afterall your the mother! xx

In December i started giving my daughter rice cereal in her bottle with formula, it seemed that it didnt help her with sleeping so i gave it to her during the day every now and then. Now on monday i started giving her banana baby food and she loves it. I mix it up with cereal and shes really getting the hang of eating with a spoon!

Hi,

My son is eating solids now. He has 3 feeds of solids in between thre/four bottles.

If your baby seems like he wants more I'd give it a go... he will soon let you know if he is interested.

Hope this helps :)

I started a couple weeks ago, my daughter hated rice, but prefers oatmeal better even though she still makes a "yuck" face...4-6 months is considered the "learning" stage of foods...I believe its not recommended to try stage 1 fruits and vegetables until at least 6 months thougfh and only one per week, same with all the cereals too.

I started my son on baby rice at the end of December and he took to it straight away. He is now on breakfast and dinner now and he is loving it. He loves to hold food as well so i wil give him half a banana rusk in his hand for his pudding after dinner. He gets in an awfull mess lol but sucks away at it till there is only half of what i gave him left, Your baby will tell you if they are ready for solid foods if they aren't ready they just wont take it or they will have tummy ach. Its trial and error i'm afraid when it comes to food and when to start giving it them. Just let your child tell you if they are ready or not. Hope this helps x

I'm waiting until 6 months. He is still doing fine on just breastmilk and plus, I'm not in a hurry for him to grow up this time around! It's kind of funny, with my first, I was so eager for him to meet the next milestone and grow up, but this time, I realize how fast it goes, so I'm not rushing things. He really doesn't need solids yet, so why push it?

i have always given her little tastes of everything and my doctor always said that was fine, and also doctor gave the ok to start regularly feeding her rice at her 4month appt and starting baby foods as well if i want to. As for allergies the way my doctor put it is that if they are going to have an allergy to something they willhave the allergy whether its now or later. Zoey is also EBF so i mix her rice and cereal with breast milk. Also she is 13lbs.8oz. 50% and shes doing wonderful with it all!

I started my daughter on cereal when she was 3 months and by the time she was 3.5month she was on food. She is now 4.5months, eats cereal, cereal with banana (stage 2) and food. She also steals some yoghurt now and then. She has 4 meals a day. Go with your gut, if you think he/she is ready. If they arent they wont take it. Do give it time though, cause they may not take it easy right away since they have to learn what the spoon is for as well.

My baby LOVED having cereal.. I mixed it with formula and sometimes juice.. It took her 3 days to get the hang of it.. the 1st day she spit it out alot and fussed a little.. but day 3 she loved it so much.. then she started not drinking her bottles.. she went from 30 ounces a day to 15 ounces a day.. and she was very constipated.. I switched to oatmeal which she did awesome on but still no luck with the bottles.. her Dr. had me stop cereal untill 6 months because formula is more important and they do not need cereal.
