Now that my daughter is trying to walk she is constantly falling down and bumping her head. She is covered in unknown bruises, on her face and her legs. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep her from getting hurt all the time, or how to make the bruises go away quicker? everyone tells me that she is bound to get bruises from time to time, but i am unwillingly to have her covered in them.

I can assure you that your little one doesn't mind the bruises. My boy, by sheer coincidence, falls on the same part of his forehead EVERY time. When he was first learning to walk, I put down a thin futon mattress on the floor where he would play, that kept the bruising away. Otherwise, a thicker carpet or rug for her to play on might help. But, before you know it, she'll be walking better and you won't need any of that anyway. Good luck!

Unless you're going to put her in a bubble or pad every corner of everything in your house, bruises are just par for the course.

I worried so much about this with my oldest, and can remember almost crying one day when I dropped her off at day care, saying, "I swear I don't abuse her! She falls all the time!". That sweet teacher laughed and reassured me that every kid in the class was sporting the same battle wounds of beginning to walk. Unfortunately, kids that are learning to walk are sooo uncoordinated and they are inevitably going to end up battered and bruised unless you are going to carry them all the time. Even my oldest, who is 7 now, comes home from school with all kinds of bruises... it looks like she gets in shin-kicking contests under the desks!

I asked our pediatrician about this the other day. She said that most household falls are ok and that bruises are to be expected. She did say that vaseline helps reduce the color.

I wish there was a magic cure for the bumps and bruises little ones will inevidably get but there isn't. Just know they'll be less and less frequent as your daughter becomes more steady with age and experience. They probably bother you more than her anyway so just try to relax and watch your daughter grow. :-)
