I remember reading that the "pushing food out" action is actually the opposite of what it appears to be - it is baby trying to get the hang of using his/her mouth for solids instead of liquids. If you think about it, eating requires totally different movements (of lips, tongue, teeth, cheeks, the entire mouth really) than drinking does.
I believe that's why the experts suggest feeding rice cereal in the bottle first, making a really loose mixture that is drinkable through a regular nipple.
I'm really curious about trying those mesh things that are supposed to be great for trying new foods and for teething.

I have been reading about this stuff lately and have started Will on rice cereal...from what I understand (check with your dr) it takes them time to figure out how use their tongues to move food to the back of their mouths so that they can swallow. Also, the american pediatric society states/recommends that infants only require breast milk or formula until they are six months due to an undeveloped digestive system.
My husband and I started cereal early because Will was showing interest in food even after have a full feed at the breast. He often spits out more then he eats but he seems to be enjoying himself. Most cereals, fruits, veggies etc...have suggested ages on the packages...as of right now my husband and I plan to continue with rice cereal for the next two months and then introduce other foods at 6 months.

Yeah mine's doing the same thing. I didn't want to put it in the bottle though so we're just going to wait it out. I"m sure they'll be ready soon.

Thanks. thats kind of what I was thinking. I figured we would give it a shot though seeing as she still seems hungry after some of her bottles and she is taking about 8oz each feeding.

We tried the rice cereal the other day too. He's going to be 4 months on sunday . I think he maybe got 10% of it swallowed and the rest he pushed out. It's just a matter of them being ready. He obviously wasn't so we're going to try in a few more weeks. There's really no need to rush them into it. Just wait and see how she does in a few weeks. They really shouldn't have solids until 4 months anyway. :)
