My daughter has been going through this too.. I feel your pain. I have had to pull over into parking lots and walk around hold her laying across my arms until she could pass it. She got in screaming fits with it. I started giving her about 3 oz of Prune Juice mixed with equal parts of water once a day and she has since become regular. No more screaming fits. The water intake isnt a bad idea either. I hope you find something that works for her.

When my daughter was dealing with constipation we took her to the doctor and along with the fruits that start with P, they recommend giving her blueberries and a cup of Activa a day. Thankfully, we have been constipation free for a couple of months!

We have had the same problem with Dallas. Around three months we began supplementing (some she mostly breastfed and still does :)) with regular similac that made her vomit. The dr suggested we try soy so we did and that worked great. Around 9 months she was eating cheese and yogurt so I thought the lactose intolerance had subsided. When she turned a year we started giving her whole cows milk she never vomited or acted like her tummy ached until about a week or so into it when she couldn't poop. We tried several things the last few weeks prunes, apple sauce, apple juice, etc nothing seemed to work except a suppository but she would be constipated again the next day. So I did some research and found that constipation is associated with lactose intolerance. We have been giving her soy milk the last few days and she has been going regularly ever since.

My son has been going through the exact same thing. I found out he was lactose intolerant. Changed his milk to lactose-free milk, and it worked!

Prune juice is what worked best for my Son. I dilute it with about 50% water, it only takes one bottle a day to see results. I've tried lots of things; tons of fruits & vegies, apple juice, dark Karo syrup, suppositories, etc. I stopped giving him rice cereal because it seemed to add to the problem, I used Oatmeal or Multi grain instead. The tummy rubs do help comfort him & when he's struggling to poop I rub his tummy & gently press his knees up toward his chest, then rub some more, it seems to help. Hang in there, I hope the problem goes away for your little one. I love this group of Moms helping other Moms, everyone has lots of great advice. Thanks!

I have one year old twins, and when I switched them over to homo milk they both got extremely constipated, like can't get it out, its stuck half way in and out constipated. poor little dear ones. Anyway, I know that food from the bread group can constipate, when they get switched to homo I had to pick up the pace on how much I was feeding to them, because obviously homo milk won't fill them up like formula and the easiest thing is giving the things they can feed themselves, being a year old and only having 3 teeth there is not much they can eat with out choking, and so I often gave them food that hails from the breads food group. I asked a nutritionist too about whether or not this could be the problem and she said most likely. So I started giving them a very small amount of fruit juice diluted with water(supposedly fruit juices are high in sugar that can be hard on babies new, and not yet come out teeth). I am feeding more fruits and veggies and I have noticed that since I am not feeding as much breads they are getting back to a softer stool, although I will say it takes a while before the hard poops stop altogether. Hope what your doc gave you helps, and I suggest taking a look at her diet and try to even the food groups out more. Its so frustrating watching your little on hurt when he/she is trying to go poop! Good Luck!

if you give your child smoothies and lots of fruit and veg and also weetabix then this should loosen it up alot because my daughter was having the same problems and my doctor informed me that a high in fibre and fruit and veg diet and it will help soften the stools alot

My daughter is almost 13 months and has the same problem. I just make sure she drinks at least one sippy cup of apple juice a day and then she goes smoothly. If she has more cheese or dairy products I try to get her to drink apple juice instead of water or milk.

PEARS! Feed her ripe pears. They are nature's laxative! Most of the "P" fruits seem to work (pears, prunes, peaches, plums). This has worked beautifully for my son and my nephews; they've never needed a chemical laxative thanks to pears.

Fruits that start with p- just think P=poop. And keep it up with the water, that's the biggest thing. The action of most laxatives is to draw water to the bowels anyway, and they really shouldn't be used as a regular fix, just when a big problem comes up. And it is doubtful that it's a dairy allergy- if it was an allergy it would cause diarrhea and gas, most likely not constipation. Too much dairy can plug anyone up, that doesn't mean your child is allergic or intolerant.

Prunes. I swear by those things lol. My son had a lot of constipation issues when he was younger & prunes really did the trick. He just started having more constipation lately (probably due to his increase in solids & not enough water), so I gave him more prunes & once again it worked great! I'm also trying to increase his water intake as well.

when kaelyn was really little she had a problem passing her stools and the doctor suggested that we give her karo syrup just a small amount in a bottle of water or in her formula bottle. or to try giving her prunes. that worked for us, she hasnt had a problem really, and if she seems a little backed up i usually just give her more water or juice and the problem usually corrects itself. good luck!!!

Thanks guys I hadnt thought of the allergy thing but she seems to be on the mend now. Its just very hard to give her the amount of fluid she needs as she point blank refuses the beaker and I worry about giving her juice/water in a bottle. she will drink it straight from a cup so I have been trying to do that but we can get very messy and wet but at least shes drinking which is the main thing.

As silly as this may sound, look at the amount of cheese your little girl is having. According to my doctor, too much cheese can 'back them up'. Don't stop it all together, she obviously needs some for her calcium, but all she needs is 3 serves of calcium per day, and if she's having a couple of bottles of cows milk and yoghurt, she should be getting plenty.

Keep up with the water. :-)

It's possible she's allergic to milk or at the very least it could be a sensitivity. Have you had her tested? They can do blood tests. You may need use an alternative to cow's milk?

The Lactalose is GREAT...my son went a week without pooping..so let me tell ya when he pooped Sunday night there was A LOT and it hurt him..he threw himself down in his crib and was biting everything when he was pushing.

The doctor told me that if it hurts babies to poop then they hold it in and it hurts even more so its a cycle ya gotta get em out of...thankfully after only a day on the lactalose my lil man pooped and it wasnt hard and painful for him (he cried a little cause hes scared its gonna hurt still poor thing)

Thank you everyone for your comments they have been really helpful, she seems to like to take water or juice direct from a cup like you and I would drink it so I have been doing that the last couple of days and it has improved slightly, we are still gonna see the doctor tommorrow though just to rule anything out and put our minds at ease, thanks again x

My daughter had this problem severely at around 3 mths and has suffered again in the past couple of months she is now 11 mths old, we tried everything until at my wits end one day and in tears myself, i found a pharmacist who listened to me and he gave me a syrup to give her and since that time life is great again. The syrup is called lactulose and it can be given to very young babies, up to the elderly, fantastic stuff and you can just administer as needed. I also swear by it myself, great for just after bub's birth when you can sometimes have trouble. Just wish i had had it for my first one!! Hope that helps Bethan, it can be a horrible time, but hang in there. :)

We just had the same issue. I actually took him in to see the doctor because I felt like it was lasting a long time. We had been feeding our son 4 6 oz. bottles of formula a day and we were told to cut out the daytime bottles and give hiim water or diluted juice instead. Now he has one bottle in the morning and one at night. We used docusate sodium, a safe stool softener, in liquid form at night in his bottle. We also gave him bran buds mixed in applesauce or some other baby food fruit. Of course, we used prunes and prune juice. My husband's aunt told us that she used to put a little bit of corn syrup in the bottle for her kids. I think, we got a bit aggressive with the finger foods because it is so hard to feed our son with a spoon. So, I really softened up his diet again. I just started giving him his own spoon so he can "help". It's messy but seems to work. It took about 2.5 weeks before he was going without really grunting and stiffening up like a board. Good luck!

You can get supositories for babies....they'll help soften the stool so she can get some relief. I would also recommend speaking with your doctor if the problem doesn't remedy itself with the more obvious natural suggestions. Water/juice, massaging are all great but there could be another reason it's happening. Food allergies/sensitivities could be the culprit.....it's worth mentioning to your doctor.

From what you've said, though, you're on the right track.! Good luck!

Massage her tummy. Always make sure you are going in a clockwise direction ,because thats the way the bowels and inner system moves, and just have her lay down with you and relax and give her a nice nightly belly rub with her nightly routine (or as often as you can). This helped Blake when she had this problem.

I had this with my oldest when I switched her to milk too fast and had to give her a baby enema and that was terrible. I would suggest water and fruits and see if that helps. Good Luck my daughter hadnt pooped in a couple days and that was a last thing to do.
