crib to toddler bed?!

My son is 16 months born 9/3/09 he still sleeps in a crib but i think in the next week or so he is gonna start a toddler bed. He does really good sleeping

My son just moved to a toddler bed. He's doing pretty good with it. And he was born 9-10-09.

i also expecting again in june im thinking of changing him before as i dont want him to feel his cot is being taken away for the new baby but on the other hand the new baby will be in a moses basket for the first 6 months so wont use it but to honest i think the sooner the better although i know he will be rnning up and down the room at any chance

Not detrimental at all. It is surprising how well kids stay in their bed, however, it is totally your call.

Do you think it would be detrimental to leave baby (09/19/2009) in her crib for longer? She doesn't have her own room so I'm weary of her being able to get out of bed and roam free..

We adopted a baby boy when I found out I was pregnant with twins. We had to get three cribs, but decided on cribs they are four in ones... Crib, toddler bed, daybed, full size bed. They're nice - from Babies R Us...

Great thread - I am in the same position & we have been wrestling with transfering our little man (Sept 1 09) within the next month. Thanks for all the great replies - I think it depends on each child but let's not under estimate our little Sept munchkins -they are resilient & most days smarter then we give credit for - at least I know mine is ;) Good luck!

i think its up to personal choice, my daughter was 15months old on xmas day 2010 and as of 30/12/10 she was moved into a bed, as i'm expecting my 2nd baby in april, she is loving it, she hasn't realized that she can get out of bed yet so she has been sleeping through 3days and going strong

My September '09 baby is my third with only 18 months between her and her big sister and 15 months between big sister and biggest sister. Both the older girls were in toddler beds early. The first at 16 months and the second at 17 months just so they didn't feel pushed out of their cot. The transition went really well and I am planning on getting Kira into a toddler bed before she turns 18 months. Good luck with your transition and with the new baby. regards from australia, Karen

Don't worry too much my 3rd son wasn't even 1 when we moved him to a bed. Introduce the new bed sooner rather than later so she has time to get used to it but make it seem like a treat for her rather than you just needing the crib. Make a big deal about her being a big girl/ sister and how special it is to sleep in a big girls bed & what a special big sister she is gonna be. It has worked with all mine & I have 4

My youngest was born 9-15-09 and we know he's not ready for a toddler bed neither is our oldest born 9-26-08 if we put them in a toddler bed they would stay up playing all night, I can just imagine it now. But your lo might be ready I would say try it out for a few days and see. Good luck

my son is 20 days older and also in a cot we are also expecting a baby in may, I had my first son into a single bed with a rail at 12 months and he was good my second is now starting to climb through the side of his cot and get his knees stuck I'm going to take the side off his choy and see how he goes he sleeps through so hopefully it doesn't matter fingers crossed I have acquired another cot just incase it is already set up

It sounds like your little one will be ready. Putting the crib mattress on the floor with rails up works well as a transition into a toddler bed. You might want to consider a twin bed on the floor instead of the toddler bed. They are cute, but kids grow out of them so fast! I also agree with the bassinet suggestion. It gives your older one a few extra months to make the transition, just in case! Good luck!

Kaleb and Noah are also 19 months apart. Kaleb was in his toddler bed by 20months (Noah slept in the cradle until he was 3months old anyways). And when Noah was about 14 or 15months old, we switched him to a toddler from the crib. My daughter Abby (9/23/09) has her toddler bed set up, but has never slept in a crib or the toddler bed. (She co-sleeps with us )

My 2 boys are also only 20 mths apart, but we had the second one in a moses basket for the first 6 mths, then moved the older one to a bed when he was 26mths, which worked very well.

We took down Sammach's crib at 11 months, she was just moving around to much, getting stuck and waking up. Because we were concerned about her rolling we put her crib mattress right on the floor. Which would have worked, be we have the Princess and the Pea. The crib mattress was just to hard for her which was why she was rolling. So right now she sleeps on our futon in the living-room and does great! Once we have the money for a new soft mattress she will be back in her room.

Our little ones are pretty resiliant, I'm sure your little one will take to a toddler bed no problem. =]

I guess it depends how much she moves around in her crib at night. I know that Ava would be on the floor within minutes if we converted her crib to the toddler bed setting. She just rolls around too much, constantly putting her limbs back inside the cot !

If your daughter still needs a few extra months in the cot, would putting the new baby in a bassinet for a few months work ? It would buy you some time.

And I think if you pulled the cot down for a few weeks *out of sight out of mind*, put it back up again for the baby to use and perhaps used some new sheets and a new baby mobile, might help your daughter not feel like the baby stole her crib :(

Our little one will be 15 months old on the 24th. He just wasn't very happy in his crib anymore, so we got him a toddler bed about three weeks ago. He's definitely sleeping better since we moved him to the bed... I think because he has more space. We put the safety rails up and I also put some of our couch cushions on the floor... just in case. And for my own peace of mind, I slept on a mattress on the floor next to his bed for a while. So far he's taking his daily naps in his little bed, no problem at all. At night he starts off in his own bed, but then when he wakes up we move him to our bed... we all get more sleep that way :-)

my son was born 9-1-09 and he still sleeps in a crib. we talked about getting him a toddler bed for christmas but we were worried also. the best thing to do is get it and try it out before the new addition arrives. we have been to friends houses that also have children and my son has slept in their toddler beds just fine. i think that if you set it up and try it now you have a crib to fall back on until she starts getting use to it.

I think it depends on the child... thats only my personal opinion. My baby was born 09-19-09 and there is no way he would stay put in a regular bed he would be up and running around at the chance! But your lil one seems happy to just stay and fall asleep so she might be ready by then?? Maybe try it out a few months before your due date with the side rails and see if it works out. Hope it does for you. Im expecting in May as well and had to accept that I will have to pay for a second crib.
