Cutting baby nails

I am hoping someone will have a suggestion about how to safely maintain finger & toe nails.

I had been using a nail file right after birth but that takes forever & only works if the baby is sleeping. Then I graduated to nail clippers that came in the baby health kit & ended up clipping his finger too, to my complete horror!!! Now I'm just scared to touch them, but I have to or else he's going to carve his beautiful face to smitherenes.

I've heard bite them off, but I'm scared to bite him & about rounded scissors & again even more afraid of cutting him again- he's very squirmy & after my nail clipper incident, I don't trust myself. Help!

I was filing all the time!! Everytime I tried clippers, they looked too dangerous and I didn't think it would get the nails shorter than filing. The corners of my baby's nails are what scratches her face. Anyway, my friend gave me the Safety 1st clippers that is attached to a big handle and you can also insert the file on the other side. I tried them and they do seem better. maybe because it's bigger and easier to hold or just that my baby is bigger and so are her hands and nails ( a little bigger). It really is so much faster using clippers. Good luck to you.

Lol! I was reading in this month's YOUR BABY mag - a nice lil trick is rubbing baby powder under baby's finger nails - this makes a white line under the nail indicating where to clip. Let ur baby sit on ur lap with her back against ur tummy for better control when cliping nails.

I've bit them since she was new, i have baby clippers but i've never used them. They are really soft and it's okay if she squirms because there is nothing sharp.

I use nail clippers and just cut the edge of the nail and then pull the rest of the nail off. It makes them duller too. The best time to do it is when they are sleeping. It's hard to get a little baby to sit still for less than a second when they are awake!!

Hi, I clip my baby's nails while I breast feed him. I sit on the couch, have him latch on while he is resting in my lap with his head is resting on a throw pillow. That way both of my hands are free to hold his little hand and clip away. When he is done with the first breast, I switch breasts so I can get his other hand. Works great because he is not at all focused on what I am doing, just eating!

Hi,

I actually was having the same problem! I found that filing takes way too long and I also used the nail clipper and clipped her thumb pretty bad. After that I said I would NEVER do it again. So I have been using the baby scissors that have a guard on the tips so it cant stab her on accident. She never seems to mind it. After I cut them then I take the nail file to the corners (if she is still cooperating, if not I try again later). I hope this was helpful.

Good luck!

Oh dear! The same thing happened to me! I was advised to do it with nail clippers, baby sized ones, while he's sleeping deeply and in good light, the best is to have him in a position where you can get close up to see too. I think cutting their nails is the worst thing I've had to do so far! haha! My baby is a realy wriggler and mover even when he's feeding so that has been the only way that I have been able to do it.

We have the same problem! The only time we can trim Aidens nails is to have my husband trim them while I'm breastfeeding.

I try to do it when she is eating.
my husband will feed her and i will cut her nails. You have to be a little firm with there hands or you may cut them again. I cut my daughter by accident before also dont worry. You will get the hang of it. It is also easier after a bath. Try to have some one else hold baby and distract him while you clip away.

I hate cutting her nails. I do it VERY carefully with baby nail clippers. I let them get pretty long before I cut them, so it makes it easier.

do it right after he eats, he'll have a full tummy and will be calm on you chest. I used to clip Kairi's nails while she was nappin on my chest. Toes her a little harder..but i tried to do it after a feeding time so she was less likely to be fussy. Oh and it can be hard sometimes, but while using the one hand to hold his hand, use your index finger to pull his skin away from his nail so your less likely to clip it.

I just hold my son sittingup in my lap facing out and cut his nail with clippers. I used the scissors at first, but those left them weird. So I used the kit clippers...you just have to get the nails cut when you can. Most of the time I can cut all of them at one sitting, but if I have to do some later i will. Just make sure to gently hold his fingertip back and cut. i usually make two-three cuts per nail, don't try to make one cut...that way you are less likely to cut his skin. Cut side, side, then middle while holding the sides of the fingertip. Or start on one side then slide the clipper over to get the over...then make sure the edges are rounded and not sharp.

I was super scared too. My husband nicked her too, so I fired him from nail clipping, then I got the nerve to do it and clipped her too. So, I fired myself and hired my mom. She did it and was such a pro even after so many years of not practicing. Anyway, since then I've maintained them with this special $7 nail file I bought at the pump station. ITS SUPER GOOD and I file them everyday that way I avoid cutting them. (but, if you choose to cut, my mom did them while she was feeding, and I kept her distracted.)
This is the file:

It's a life saver for me!

When I first started to trim my sons finger nails I was scared of chopping his finger off. But after awhile the fear goes away. Just hang in there! When I first started out, I always waited until he was in a deep sleep and then trimmed his nails. Now he's used to it. Hope it helps :)

well i if you dont feel like biting them especially since its make them sharper in a way. Buy the baby kit that comes with baby nail clippers and try to clip them when your child is sleeping. Wait until their in a deep sleep and just do it real quick. just try to only cut the white parts cause if you cut to low it will bleed

i'm using a baby nailclipper. i put my girl on a carrier infront of me and i'll clip her fingernail outside my frontdoor, she'll be busy with the scenery she still fidgets a lil but just hold her firm i guess. besides that, d best way to get em is during feeds. =)

Luke's nails were really sharp-not long, just sharp, so cutting really didn't do anything for him-he marked up his face so much and I got some comments about it, but I couldn't cut his nails down any more! he got really bad hangnails up til he was about 3 months old which my husband chewed off (although at the baby classes they told us not to do that but he was way too twitchy to use the clippers). Now I'm starting to use the baby clippers because they are so much sharper than regualr ones but only when he is breast feeding because that is when he is the calmest-and with the use of the bobby pillow, I can feed him with no hands for a couple seconds at a time to cut his nails if the hubby isn't around to help.

I would just try to stay confident, even with the little mis-hap. I too did that a few weeks ago, I couldnt believe it. I was scared to try again, but you just need to trust yourself just to be extra extra careful. Good luck to everyone!

I was the same way. Absolutely terrified to cut his nails and ended up not clipping them short enough. Well one morning when I went to get him he had 5 nice scratches on his face. After that I got over the fear and started to bite them off, as suggested by my mom. Believe it or not, it's easier than you think, and he doesn't seem to mind at all. You can feel how much nail needs to come off and the nails are soft so they come off easy.

Lol! You sound just like me a while back. I was terrified of cutting my son's nails because the first time I went to do it, I cut his poor little finger :( What me and my husband have found really useful is to have him hold the baby during feeding time, and he's so preoccupied with the formula, that he really doesn't care that I'm cutting his fingernails. It's wonderful because he doesn't squirm at all, unlike he used to do before.

If you breastfeed, I'm not so sure if it would work the same way, because my son is strictly bottle fed, so it might be easier. You should at least give it a try.
