I have been feeding my son Heinz baby food. He loves the organic mixed vegetables and pears. Lately when I open a new can the smell that comes out is disgusting, it smells like chemicals mixed with food. Has anyone else experienced this? I just throw the can away because if the smell is enough to make me gag I am not feeding it to my son. So I am thinking of making baby food for him but I have no idea where to start. Can I freeze it? How much should I make at a time? And does anyone have any recipes?

I use to make baby food all the time! It's really easy and sooo much better than like you said, the extra chemicals that are put in them. I can say that I have never bought a jar of baby food ever. Like I said, its really easy to do. I either steamed, boiled or roasted veggies then pureed them and always frozen some into ice cube trays for later. You can add in some chicken, breast tent to make the puree a little grainy, thighs have more fat and blend better. It's so easy to steam some extra veggies while making dinner, then just puree and keep in the fridge or freeze some. If you freeze into ice cube trays, you can take a few out to defrost over night, or nuke a few mins, be care it's not too hot. I don't have actually recipes. I would roast a sweet potato then puree it, simple as that. You dont have to cook fruits, inless you want to like roasted peaches(makes them a little sweeter) Applesauce is super easy to make, just apples, little bit of sugar if it needs it, or maple syrup, dash of cinnamon. Cook with a bit of water or even apple juice, mix in any other fruit if you like, and puree. I use to make a tofu veggie 'stirfry' puree. Steamed veggies of choice(i used carrots, broccoli, and tiny bit of onion and tofu. Puree and added a drop or 2 of soy sauce and sesame oil for a little flavor. She use to love it! Just about anything can be pureed with a little water, milk, broth or juice. You can also make your own cereals! Just put rice, brown rice, oats, barley, lots of other grains in a blender or food processor and grind until almost a powder. Then cook with some liquid of choice, taste to make sure its cooked. My tip is to make a little more baby food than you need, pour into an ice cube tray, freeze then put cubes in a freezer bag. You can write the date and type of food the cubes are, keep a stash in the freezer and take out as needed! Go for it!!! I loooved making baby food and being able to control everything she was eating, no crazy chemicals, additives and preservatives, or added salt and sugar.

hey i make my own food, i bought a baby bullet and i throw anything and everything in it and it purees for me within seconds.. my only challenge that i am facing now is that my daughter is teething so she stopped eating solids for a while. she is 6.5 month now, but she started eating solids at 4 month. i hope this helps.. i preferably don't like jar food cuz of all the chemicals, and you do not know when they made it..

Making baby food is really quick and easy, for pureed fruits, it's simply a matter of boiling them down to a softer texture, or buying canned fruits (drain the syrup off) and blending until smooth, for a lumpier consistency use a potato masher.

I put portions of our dinners aside, things like tuna mornay, spaghetti bolognaise, shepards pie etc and also different vegetables.

I freeze the fruits into cubes and add them to cereals in the morning or yoghurts for lunch, and the dinners I freeze in the Heinz jars, they don't crack and re-heat well in the microwave (minus the lid!)

Foods like mashed banana and avocado, toast fingers, porridge with a bit of cinnamon and fruit puree mixed through, and I've also started giving him soft boiled cubes of sweet potato, pumpkin, and also brocolli and cauliflower florets, he just loves to munch on them.

As for the chemical or wierd smell in the baby foods, I've never experienced it, but my sense of smell going weird was always the first sign opf pregnancy for me all four times! :p

I make all of my daughter's food. I refuse to buy the jars because they are kind of expensive and I want to be able to control the quality of ingredients with not additives or preservatives. The only thing she has eaten that I didn't make was a can of organic pureed butternut squash because contained only squash and water. Also butternut squash can be a little time consuming and I was tired that week ;) It's really easy! When I make our food I can very easily throw another pot on the stove and either boil or steam. Then blend(food processor, blender, or stick blender). Some foods I just push through a sieve like bananas and avocados. I also bake some of her foods for different flavors. It's really easy to do. Some days I make up a few batches of different foods then pour the puree into ice cube trays then into a freezer bag. I will have a stash for a week or two. Every day I take out a few cubes and just nuke for a few seconds to defrost. Always make sure to stir well and check the temp. My baby loves her foods! And I feel good knowing that her food is good for her! No extra salt, sugar or any other chemicals. I highly recommend making baby food!! And I highly recommend the site that was mentioned above... http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/
It's a wonderful and very informative website!!!!

I have made my own baby food before. However, my son doesn't like it, and won't eat it. I'm not sure if it's because I'm mixing it with water instead of juice, like the prepackaged ones do? Good luck, it's super easy, and SUPER cheap! Hope all goes well for your baby!!

I make all my own baby foods...except oatmeal, rice and prunes. I steam all the veggies and blend it to a puree then put it in ice cube trays and freeze it. You can do fruits and meats like this too. I have not done any meats yet but I was told to use a food processor for those. I love making the food because I know my baby is getting the best and freshest foods and the best part, you save so much money. Best of luck to you!

I make all my own baby food. Its super easy, just steam or bake whatever you want then mash or puree it until you get the consistancy you want. I freeze everything in ice cube trays-my son eats more now so i take 2 cubes for 1 portion but its so easy and convenient. He eats a very wide variety of foods this way and you know its fresh and organic. You can also season it the way you would make your food and your baby will get used to your cooking. Now my son loves my cooking. Good luck!

i make all my daughters foods...
she loves fuits and vegetables, oatmeal and brown rice...
everything gets pureed and then stored in ice cube trays...
we just started on baby smoothies, she is crazy for them, berries, bananas purreed together and thinned down with breast milk...i always start with smaller batches until we determine if she likes a ceratin food or not...this way she gets a variety, can eat what we eat mostly, and i have backup portioned out...i really think its the best way to go, canned baby food smell makes me want to be sick too...

Making baby food is so easy! I was worried at first because I read posts and articles about how time consuming it can be, but it really isnt. I have a large food processor and also a small one, and they do the job perfectly. I will usually do 1-2 ice cube trays full and freeze them. You can keep the food for 3 months frozen. We do everything! I love to try new foods, and Im adding herbs and some spices to my daughters food to expand her taste buds.
I tried some baby food for my daughter and I was repulsed. I know the standards for baby food are high now, but I still feel like meat sitting in a jar for months cant be that healthy!
You can blend just about anything for your little one, no recipes needed. My husband bought me a great recipe book, and Ive referenced it, but mostly I just blend together fruits or veggies that I think might taste good together. Its surprising the combinations my daughter likes. Most recently Ive added mint to her sweet peas and green beans she she cant get enough!
Good luck!

I make baby food all the time. There are so many more options and choices plus it is so much cheaper! My sons favorite is spinach with a little banana mixed in. I just put everything in a blender and puree it. We do broccoli, carrots, spinach, squash, bananas, avocado, pears, watermelon, swiss chard, apples, and sweet potatoes, just to name a few. I have small containers that I put it in and then they go into the freezer until I need them. I usually make big batches of a few things so I don't have to do it that often.

i make mine and yes i freeze it in ice cube trays (i make about a tray of each) - for the most part, it's good for three months frozen. i just went to the book store and looked for books there..they have some really great ones that are written by dr's from children's hospitals. however, once i started i quickly skipped the book and pretty much just blended up whatever we were eating for him
