My son has a terrible running/stuffy nose and he literally cannot sleep at night because he cannot breath. If he does manage to pass out he wakes up gasping for breath since he wont breath out of his mouth, just his stuffy nose. Sometimes he ends up throwing up because of the snot running down the back of his throat, he swallows and gags. His doctor says we have to wait it out but I wanted to know if any moms out there had any solutions or remedies that worked for them as these sleepless nights are getting to both of us.

there is a nasal liquid called FESS and they have a version for babies. its very simple ingredients, nothing strong or chemicals or anything. it comes in a little plastic bottle. you can either hold it to the nostrils and simply gently squeeze so it squirts up the nose even when there sitting...its very easy to use and helps. its not going to clear him up completely but it does help. that and go invest in a vicks vapouriser. you can buy cheap versions but they arent as good. itll set you back $30 or $40 but its great. and rub infant vicks on babys chest and upper back. it all helps. together its quite effective.

the best thing i've found is simply baby saline spray, not saline drops. They kind of force their way thru the snot instead of sitting on the outside of it. We have to hold my little girl over the sink because almost immediately when you start it this stuff just comes gushing out the other nostril. We do it right before bed, use a bulb syringe after we're done at the sink, and then give her her last milk sippy cup and put her to bed. It works wonders! clears her out so well she can sleep all night. Of course, propping one end of her crib mattress too. good luck!

Suggestion... Get some Allecet antihistamine, 10/1 he has allergies especially if it is in a dry area, get a cold air humidifier and then elevate the side of his bed/cot slightly. My little one had this too, and I am now using these and a Illiadin Saline solution to get the mucus loosend and then suction it out with a little chicco bulb suction thingie.. hope it helps you like it did me...:-)

I know how frustrating a cold can be, especially now that we are not allowed to give children under the age of 6 cough medicine(in Canada). I too know what it is like to have your child cough so hard they puke :( Something I stumbled across that you could try- Its made by BOIRON its Homeopathic medicine, the company makes one called- CORYZALIA used for nasal congestion, runny nose and sneezing. There are other ones too like- Camilia which is used for teething. I suggestion you do some research online with the words I have given you here. I use Boiron's Coryzalia and Camilia with my twins and I find both work very well, but thats my opinion. I bought it at Zellers, but again call around, do your research, if you decide to try it! Good Luck!

Gotta love it, my baby can't breath, wait it out! My doc said the same things, Baby Vicks (although I was told not on the feet cuz she'll eat it at a younger age, lol), steamy showers, warm baths, and Tylonol. I plugged in a humidifier and that helped a little. Never raised her mattress but she grew to love the "boogie bulb" as we called it. If he's around a year, you could probably just continue to nurse it the way we would. Boiling some pasta in some chicken stock might hit the spot. Keep him hydrated (water and juice if he'll take it). I sure hope the poor dear feels better by now :-)

You can get a saline solution to clean their noses out, we find that works really well

Have you tried cleaning his sinus's out with Saline? My son just turned 12 months and has ragweed allergies. When I hear him starting to get stuffy, I clean out his nose with Simply Saline. We don't use it often, but sometimes a nasal aspirator doesn't always get out the "guck" in his sinus'. I have him sitting up on his changing table with a cloth on his lap to catch the drainage and spray once in each nostril then aspirate the remainder out. Normally I get some of the congestion out then and the rest starts to come loose later after he sneezes. I then have to aspirate his nose again. As of right now, he has not had a cold; but in my family, allergies tend to lead to cold. This may help with the night congestion. My son stopped fighting me once he figured out he could breathe better. It may take a couple of days to get the full effect. I hope this helps.

Go for the cold air vaporizer at night, elevate the mattress to whatever degree you can. Both our doctor & the nurses recommend the Vicks Vapour rub on the soles of their feet (& chest) -- seems to work well. We also had a lot of luck with the saline spray & the hot showers. If they don't like the shower - even just close them in the bathroom with you while you shower & keep your fan off. Can't imagine it being great for your walls, but the nurses told us it would help with the congestion - provided he is not at the stage my son is at (crawling & getting into mischief)...
Best of luck to ya mom!

benedryl at bedtime and Little Nose saline drops and sucking out the boogies :) My doctor said 3/4 teaspoon for my 20 pound 11 month old. Call your pedi and ask. It really helped her at night.

like all the other moms - steamy showers help break everything up, but i needed to hold my son, the steam rises, so playing on the floor is not as effective. saline drops are great, as well as the bulb syringe - it is best to get drops made for babies, so the dropper size is appropriate. lastly, elevating the bed ( i am hoping that Noreen didn't really mean 90 degrees, my doctor said more like 30) although that never worked b/c my son always turned around and was upside down, but that works for some. Unfortunately, it is all trial and error to see what works for your baby, the cool mist vaporizer only worked with one of mine! Good luck, and just remember, he WILL get better :)

Hi Lacy,

Everytime my little girl had a stuffy nose, I usually give her a warm bath first and clean her nose. I usually use a towel that I run under hot water and wring it out then wipe her nose and face. If she wakes up during the night, I do the same because my mum used to always do this and the steam helps clear their nose. A baby saline spray is good. If you're in Australia, (that's where I'm from) you can buy Fess for babies from the chemist.

I also rub her neck and chest with Vicks Vapourrub for babies after her bath which also helps clear the nose and sooth to help her sleep.

Hope this helps. My little girl had a terrible flu just recently and had to have pediatric drops of amoxylin. But everytime the warm towel wiping her face and nose helped throughout the night.

I've had a lot of problems with this with my youngest son. I've found the best thing is pretty much a combination of what everyone else has said. I usually start with the bath/shower before bed to help clear him up (showers definitely work best because of the steam), then after dressing him I use a baby saline nasal spray (much easier then the drops) and I use a vaporizer (actually I usually put this on before the bath/shower so that it has had time to penetrate the room a bit, so his nose doesn't start to block itself up again straight away).

have you tried a humidifier? It helps my LO a lot. Except when he has the flu or is teething. With those, we have to just wait it out. But for regular runny noses, the humidifier really works.

If he doesnt like showers then maybe play with him in the bathroom for a while (outside of the bath) with the door closed and the water on real hot so that it gets all steamy in there so that the steam can help also with breaking it up. Other than that I cant say much, just the same thing as all the other ladies on here!

Well he's still got a runny nose and now a cough. We did elevate his bed and have been putting vicks baby rub on. Both of which have helped. The warm bath helps, but he hates having showers. We have also been giving him Tylenol which helps. I love the idea of a vaporizer and I think I am going to buy one tomorrow for him. If only he would learn to breath out of his mouth now...Thanks for all the advice ladies.

My son started with a runny nose yesterday, which developed into a fever last night. We were up all night. Today is so tired, and still has a runny nose too. My dr said to keep giving him tylenol or motrin every 6 hr to help with the fever. Though didn't see a reason for a visit. I'm worried though. I hate waiting it out. Could this also be teething? His temp hasn't been greater than 100.4. Sorry I didn't have any advice.

I found as well that having a hot steamy shower with them really helps! My two loved this and would just lie there for ages with their head on my shoulder. Its really good for a stuffy nose :)

my son has been sick with runny noses on an off for quite a while and so we've become pros at helping him. Vicks baby rub on his neck, chest and back. Sometimes I reapply it in the middle of the night. Also, he gets a long, warm bath right before bed so the heat and water can help loosen up the mucus. I try to suction whatever else is visible in his nose right after the bath - he doesn't like this, but it is necessary - and a saline solution helps with that a lot. Sometimes, when it is really bad, I will sleep with him on the rocking chair/recliner so that his head is up where my shoulder is and he can breathe AND sleep better. I'm a little sore in the morning, but at least I get sleep. I'm not sure if you can do that, but it's always my last resort.

Soon, your boy will learn to breathe out of his mouth as ours has learned - although he's not very good at it yet. Good luck and I totally know what you're going through. Hang in there - most babies colds last roughly 3-5 days, but the runny nose can last a couple more days after that.

You can elevate the head of his bed 90 degrees (Which might not be ideal if he can climb out) and use saline in his nose. Basically it's 4oz of water with a teaspoon of salt. You want to squirt some up his nose and let some go down the back of his throat. That will break everything loose. Having a vaperizer in his room helps too.

We had the same problem a few weeks ago and we bought a steam vaporiser for their room. you just add a bit of eucalyptus or something and leave it on all night and it will automatically turn itself off when it runs out of water. ours can go for 15 hours when full. It worked wonders! its a horrible feeling having them sick and not being able to do much about it.... try vapor rub on his clothes as well (they recommend not putting it on his skin) as thats supposed to really clear up the nasal passages. Good luck i hope he gets better soon! Let us know how you go!
