My lil guy will be 5 months on the 24th. I introduced rice at about 3 1/2 months or a little later. He did NOT like it at all. They say not to give up so I tried it for a few days. I heard that you can feed them any SINGLE grain cereal so I tried oatmeal instead of rice...He LOVED it!!! I have been giving him oatmeal ever since. I'm just not sure how much to give him though...I usually give him about 2 tablespoons around 1130-12pm. Should I give it to him at dinner time too??? And when should I introduce fruits/veggies??? He is a tiny thing...long, but lean. He is 26in but only 14lbs 13oz. I'm hoping the cereal will help him gain some weight. Any suggestions???

I always used oatmeal for my older kids instead of rice. They had constipation and the rice made it worse. The oatmeal has a little fiber in it so it helps them go better! My son born 9/12 has only had cereal a couple times and its oatmeal. I give him just like 6-8 bites!

My little girl just turned 5 months and was the same as your lil guy. the rice cereal made her gag. As soon as I gave her oat, she just gobbled it up like there was no tomorrow. She started with only a few spoonfuls, but her appetite has now progressed to 3 tablespoons of dry cereal. I give it to her in the morning as breakfast. She is 13lbs and 24 inches long. Perfect for her age. She also has veggies for lunch (about 2 tbsp) and supper (about 2 tbsp) and if she is still hungry after supper veggies, I will give her fruit as desert (1-2 tbsp depending on how hungry she is). She has been doing fine and the transition has been a breeze. She will of cours bf between meals and at night before bed.

I have been giving my son rice and oatmeal separately twice a day per my ped. advice because he has a big appetite. She advised us to introduce solids once he was able to fully control his head and about two weeks after he started rice.

I just started feeding my 3 month old oatmeal cereal with his regular formula! Cuz I see that the formula wasn't cutting it! He seems to like it! Plus it filling him up pretty good! I just put 1 scoop of formula and a half of scoop of oatmeal cereal! In a 6oz bottle! So far so good!

I have a little guy too. He is 5 1/2 mths and 13lbs and 25 inches long. He got sooo constipated with rice so I am trying oatmeal tomorrow. My doc. said it doesnt matter how much solids we feed him it is in his genetics to be small. I thought I was the only one with a tiny baby so good to know Im not alone! If you have been giving it to him in the morning I dont think it would hurt to do night either that way when you start inroducing more solids more times a day he will be used to it.

I do oatmeal...single grain though. Rice cereal has nothing in it nutrient wise and oatmeal barely does either but it is much better than the rice. I'm just doing a dinner type meal on a spoon. He only does about 5/6 spoonfuls.
