I have been signing with my little guy since January, he is now 6.5 months and he understands milk, cereal, please, mom, dad, I am also using thank you, dog, more, eat, fall, down and more. I am using as many words as I know for now, I know it may be a bit confusing to him seeing all the signs but I figure that if I continue to use them he will pick them up in time! He has not signed back as of yet but he is understanding them.
I think it is a great way to communicate, especially if children may be shy as they get older, and they do not want to talk around people but they will be able to sign!!
I think it is a great idea and I think everyone should try it!!

I've just started with my daughter as well. I started really early with my first child and he took awhile to pick it up, but once he did it was amazing. He was signing 50+ words before he could even speak. It's amazing when the babies realize that every word is represented by a sign. It made for fewer tantrums and moments of frustration. Keep at it and be consistent. Some babies pick it up quickly and some take awhile. It all pays off in the end and I highly recommend doing it.

Yes! I also used it with my daughter (she's 7 now.) I think because she had some basic signs, she never really became frustrated before she could talk - because she could tell me what she needed. I was very lucky to have a daycare that taught the signs, and gave the parents a sheet for reference/pracetice. Signing can come in handy for a LONG time. She will still use it when I'm on the phone, and I used it at her last swim meet - it was so loud, there was no way the kids could hear us - it was very handy to have signs that many of them already knew (stop, again, yes, no.)

We started basic signs with our older son when he was one year- he would watch us do them prior to that, but at 12 months my husband helped him sign 'more' and each time he did it I put a spoon of his lunch in his mouth. After that one meal he signed it on his own. He quickly picked up the few other signs we wanted him to learn and plan on doing the same thing with our six month old. With our oldest, even learning the few basic signs (more, please, thank you, all done, eat, drink) helped tremendously with his whining and frustration at not being able to communicate!

I have 4 children oldest is 9 youngest is almost 7 months. I used sign language with my older three. We used more, please, and no no. Just those three mad a tremendous difference in everyday living. I still sign no to my older ones when we are some where and I can't talk to them.

I just got the book and have been using a few signs, mommy, daddy, eat, and milk. I am so excited about it. I haven't seen any response yet, but I can't wait until we do!

I've tried. I bought a set of Baby Einstein DVDs and one of them is about signing with your baby. But right now. My daughter just thinks mummy is doing some kind of funny dance and laughs at me. But she's making all kinds of speech like sounds now. I talk to her alot (Since I'm a bit of a chatter box). She's starting to make sounds like "mmmmaaa"

My husband and I have been signing with our daughter from the beginning. I work with students with developmental delays and if they are not able to speak, we will teach them sign language to communicate. I would highly encourage you to use sign. They say it often promotes speech development earlier and will give them a way to communicate wants/needs before they have the ability to speak. Just my opinion, but I am using signs for items that are highly motivating or desired to my daughter (i.e. eat, milk, jump, up, water, music) . We also stay away from using the signs for more, please, etc. because they are so general that if your child learns to sign these, they may sign for "more" and you may not know what they are signing for. Instead, teach them the signs for specific things that they may want and first introduce the things that they want the most and the most often.

I've been doing sign language since he was born. He now can tell me when he wants "milk", Daddy or his brother. They say the earlier you start the longer it will stay with them.

I taught sign to my first (now almost three!). I started with milk, food, more, and all done at about 6 month and she started signing for milk at 7.5 months. The other signs didn't come till around 9-10 months and then things really took off! My daughter is very verbal, but signing was still so helpful in communication. I have started with my second in these last 6 weeks or so. Just be patient--they will understand first and then sign back soon enough! Good luck!

We just finished taking a class. For the most part we use milk, more, hello, mom, dad, eat & drink but we are trying to get him used to more words. After talking to some of the mom's who have taken this course before us they say it takes a couple months of consistent use to understand & sign back. He is starting to recognize some signs though so its encouraging.

My boyfriend and I both are deaf, and we have a 6 month old daughter with perfect hearing. We sign a lot of things to her but the most consistent signs she sees everyday is "milk", "bath", "mama", "dada", "more", "please"... Callie has not replied to the signs yet but knows what I am talking about when I sign them. She watches our hands with intense interest. Callie also lights up in delight whenever I sign the ABC's to her in a singsong voice. (I can speak a bit).

However, of course we were concerned with her developing her speaking ability as she gets older... So we play the baby einstein DVDs everyday for her to listen, and whenever we visit both sides of our families, (they all are hearing), they will speak to her.

I've only used "milk" so far, just so i know when he want to nurse. it looks like he is trying to do it, his little fists start to pulse when he needs a drink. we try "more" sometimes too. (he's almost 7 months)

I bought the baby sign language dvds and books and tried it out with my first child (she is now 3) and it really seemed to work! I only started to use it around 8 months old and she started to actually make some signs aroung 10 months. I used mainly words that we would use all the time or words for some of her favorite things like mommy, daddy, more, all done, play, eat, bottle, puppy, cereal. It was a bit frustrating at first because she didnt seem to understand it at all, but when she made the first sign for "more" I was so excited!! I am just going to start using the signs again now for my son who is just over 6 months old. So, good luck!! Hope you like it as much as we did!!

When my oldest was a baby we had a foster daughter who was deaf so of course we used sign constantly! LOL! We knew our son was picking it up and he started signing back around 11m (he was preemie so developmentally he was 9m). He will be four in May and can still understand sign well and is starting to incorporate it in his language when we visit with our former foster daughter (now adopted by a deaf family). So we are taking extra effort to sign with our baby now, hoping he benifits as much as our oldest. The baby is 6m today and he watches and giggles as we sign to him, I am sure he'll start responding soon. It is wonderful for early communication, confidence, and helping to develop those brain synopses!

This is so funny because I just went to a class on this last night. The teacher told us that the best signs to start with (if you haven't started already) are often: please and more. Please is just rubbing the chest, SHe said that this is a great one to teach as an alternative to the whimpering some babies do to be picked up and put down (as well os other things). SHe said we should always use the word with the sign and never by itself. I think we are going to give it a try. I can't wait to see how it goes!

We've been signing since about 4 weeks old. We use Daddy, Mommy, Kitty, and Doggie consistently....More, Bottle, and Sleep less consistently. No response yet but the class we took said that we might not see response until 7-8 months.

My baby hasn't responded at all to signing. I guess I still have to get used to it and be more consistent. The signs that I'm using now are mama, water, and shower. My baby is 6 months. I started about a month ago.

I've been using it with my baby since she was 5 months old, and now she definitely understands the signs... but i think she won't sign back until she's around 8-10 months old. I actually got encouraged to use sign language by a woman who used it with all of her 3 kids... and it worked! so, still waiting... and hoping for the best! i must say, not many people accept it around me, many think i'm wasting my time. but i'm not going to give up!

My sister in law is a huge proponent of this. I wasn't when she had my nephew (now 4), but I have been more comfortable with it over the years. I think I am going to do it, even if only for a few words. We'll see!!! What is everyone introducing first?

Which signs did you choose to introduce first?

Holy cow!!! I just decided last night to start it with my little one. It seems he is respoding well to it. I didn't do it with my older daughter, but i've heard it is GREAT! And my daycare provider is up for it too, which makes even more happy abou it. We are going to start with more, please, drink and eat.
