oh my lord... my son is going on 19 months and he throws himself backward and hits the back of his head on everything... he gets a little attitude and will even head butt others with the back of his head.. he got my dad right square in the face and has gotten my husband on the chest and me in the mouth... I wish he would stop but I also heard it was just a phase and he will grow out of it... so I am sitting back and watching to see if he stops... if not I am going to talk to his Ped.

My son did the same thing. I ignore it. He really has only hurt himself once and I simply picked him up then and gave him a kiss and ice then went about my business still up holding my no. More often he doesn't hurt himself and I just move on and give it no attention although it is hard since he screams at the top of his lungs about it! As a previous poster said it is a cry for attention. So I have to take into context why he started. Was it because I said no or is there some other legitimate need that I have ignored. He really would bang his head when had an ear infection and he banged it so hard, this was his way of telling me he was in pain and needed help. After we got the meds he was fine. I know it is hard but it won't last forever.

MY SON ETHAN ALSO STARTED THIS @ 16months, I BOUGHT A BOOK TITLED RAISING A STRONG WILLED CHILD & LEARNED THIS ACT IS A CRY FOR ATTETION & ALSO USED TO ESTABLISH A SENSE OF DEPENDENCE. WHEN A CHILD DOES THIS IS SAYS NOT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ACT BUT GET YOUR CHILDS ATTETION TOWARD ANOTHER ACTIVITY. a PARENTING MAGAZINE I READ SAID THIS IS ALSO A TYPICAL BEHAVIOR KIDS TURN TO BECAUSE THEY GET FRUSTRATED TRYING TO COMMUNICATE THEIR NEEDS & THIS ACT IS AN INSTANT ATTENTION GETTER SO TRY TEACHING UR KIDS SOME BABY SIGNS, BABY EINSTEINS HAS A GREAT VIDEO @ TARGET CALLED MY FIRST SIGNS. HOPE IT HELPS ;0)

My 18 month old son has been doing the same thing since he was about a year old! He will do it on anything and everything he can find to hit his head on. I just try not to give him attention for it, and i have noticed when I do give him attention he does it harder and more! So I am actually going to ask his doctor on his next appointment! I will let you know the advice I get :)!

My daughter Peyton does the same thing. She did it when she was about a year old but she stopped now she has started again. I try to distract her with something else before I take anything from her and she will usually do it when she is very sleepy and fighting a nap! I just have to make sure she takes her naps on time.

My son did the same thing but after a while he stopped because we took no notice of him. Of course it's hard coz you don't want them to hurt themselves but it's an attention seeking act so of you don't give them that attention they should stop... Good luck!!

We always try the distraction method before we pick our son up. Sometimes it works.
