I talked to Abby's pedi and my lactation consultant. They both say that food is just for fun until they are one and that her main source of nutrition should be from breastmilk and that I should be nursing her ATLEAST 6-8x a day. Not to mention my own research that I've done. :)

My son was born 10th September and I can tell you, he's a muncher. I stopped breastfeeding him almost a month ago, but he has been on solids from 6 months. He will eat anything I give him. Usually I make homemade stews, with aubergine, potatoes, carrots, sometimes veal, once a week fish, cheese, egg yolks mashed with bananas, almost all fruit, he loves fruit, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, melon, pears, apples.... I love that he is not picky. He only has 1 tooth at the moment so I still mash everything. My mother-in-law has a cow farm and sends us fresh milk every day and my baby loves it. I am so proud that we only give him what is best for him, only healthy food. I am aware that I could have breastfed him a little longer, but it's done now. I must say, that I disagree with Noreen. There are NOT enough nutrients in breastmilk for 9 month olds, especially if they are already active (crawling, cruising or walking). Maybe your sources for your research were for younger children. And I think that every mother knows what is best for her baby, whether he is hungry or getting enough throughout the day, even the first time mothers (like myself) have a born instinct about these things and should trust it.

My daughter is still on purees of fruit and cereal but she also doesn't have any teeth yet. She does gum rice crackers and rice crispies but that is about the extent of her food. I feed her a fair amount of cereal and fruit for lunch but she gets breast milk the rest of the day. She's up to about 20 pounds at 9 1/2 months.

I use hylands teething pills to help ease the discomfort of teething and in general you and your Dr should discuss food introduction but without family history of allergies then I would just ease them into it. My 8 month old twins really like the parents choice puffs in a variety of flavors, easily dissolved. As for table food my kids eat what I eat just chopped up finer they really prefer table food over baby food. My daughter would refuse to eat the baby food and needed something with texture but my boy will eat anything put into his mouth. Avoid starting them out on anything that has strong allergic ties like strawberries and nuts (peanuts mostly). I say that but my kids love PB&J sandwiches (blackberry jelly)!!! You know what your family history is like and what you tend to avoid and over all that is probably the best for your kids.

Kehlson will be 9 months on the 28th and is eating stage 3 fruits and veggies. We are wainting until he can chew meat to give it to him. He will eat some raw fruits and gerber crunchers. Some days he has a hard time eating too. Yesterday he only had 6 oz of food and 20 oz of formula. I haven't talked to his Dr. about it yet because he is usually a pretty good eater. I have noticed on the days that I give him Motrin he eats better.

Bridget, something my mom told me was "Listen to your pediatrician and nod and smile at everyone else." There are a lot of moms out there that think they know more than there doctors. I have also been attacked by moms that think there superior because they nursed. Just shake it off and keep doing what your doing. You don't have to prove yourself to anyone.

I've just been reading all posts and can't belive how mums can critasise other mums for what they are doing, sure I don't agree with some mums opinions on how or what they feed there baby but that's my thoughts and every baby differant, my son has been eating solids form 4m and now at nearly 10m eats most things that we do.. But I have friends who started solids
at 6m and still only eats mushed up baby food. It's not my place to agree nor dissagree whith how they are bring up there child unless they ask for specific advice. I think as lomg as they are healthy gaining weight and happy who am I to tell them what to do and even then it's my opinion.. We need to support each other motherhood is confusing and sometimes hard as it is whithout judgmental coments!!

my son was born the same day as yours and he eats everything we eat..i just chop it up smaller..some of his faves are chicken, fish, ham, potatoes, rice , pasta, broccoli, cauliflour, peppers, mushrooms, and just recently - eggs. he eats much more then this, but those are is absolute favorites. he has oatmeal, or waffels and fruit for breakfast...however, when he's teething, most of the time all bets are off for food...sometimes he just wants more formula..

my son was born on the 29th he eats EVERYTHING!!! he has 8 teeth!!! He has never been a fan of formuls he would much rather eat baby food table food anything really! He is really good at feeding himself too! I give him formula after he eats usually only 4 to 6 ounces..He sleeps through the night almost 12 hours. He weighs 24 pounds too! So the breastmilk/formula statement is only to YOUR child everyone is different trust me I know my best friend had a baby girl the day after me!! And they are way different! My son prolly would have starved if i hadny started him on solids...He was hungry every 2 hours and was very cranky all the time. But to answer the queation try cold foods but the jar in the fridge then serve it I do his friuts and he loves it cold. and like i said he has 8 teeth!

I've just gotten to the bottom of the post and forgot the question... I guess I got too distracted by Noreen and Bridget...
Just wait one second.... How does "My son is gonna be nine month on the 23rd he is teething and dont wanna eat...and i wanna ask what other babies of his age are eating and how do u prepare their food ???" have anything to do with your situation Bridget... and Noreen why are you forcing your point. Yes a baby's main source of nutrition should be that of breast milk/formula for the first year of life... everyone knows that but you forgot to state... with exception! Every child is different and, although it has nothing to do with the question, in Bridgets case she has a sick baby... Bridget I am sorry to hear you have had a rough time but I am still trying to see how this little debate and hurt feelings has anything to do with the question at hand.
Now to answer the question! My Nola is 8 1/2 months old and I make all of her food myself. I alternate new fruits and new veggies every four days to see about allergic reactions. She has whole grain oatmeal, whole grain brown rice, bananas, apples, avocados, pears, plums, apricots, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, zucchini, peas, and I just finished making her a chicken stew that I plan on blending up as well. I love making her food for her if you want to try something with a good texture for teething try mashing up some avocado... it has no real taste but the texture is very smooth.
Oh and a note... my babies main source of nutrition is breast milk... she feeds on demand and before any meals. Our mealtime is for fun and practice... although I make sure to research all the nutrients in the fruit and veggies I give her to make sure they are the highest for the extra boost!
I also give her water for fun in a sippy cup for the practice. I give her about 2 oz. a day if that. It is not for hydration just for fun!
Sorry for the long post... hope this helps Sabrina!

My son who was born 6th sep is eating everything, his day goes like this, formula when he wakes breakfast an hour after that toast and or cerial with fruit purée or yoghut, morning tea after his morning nap bannana, or pear (fresh) lunch vegimite (we are in Australia) sandwhich or a hot meal minastroni soup or pumpkin soup with bread, he then has another bottle an hour after that then a nap. Afternoon tea is either fruit, youghurt and sometimes a plain biscuit. Dinner is now mostly what we eat so baked lamb and vegies or pasta with a meat sauce or chicken with rice and he loooovee fish. And jelly or baby custard for dessert.. He ate his first sushi yesterday and loved it and he chomper on corn on a cob aswell!! He does have 8 teeth
so he can chew really well! He also loves tomato and cucumber but I limit the tomato because of the acid in it and he enjoys scrambled eggs which I add leeks, chicken and a bit of cheese to... I think by now they can have most things but I
don't give honey or nuts till 18 plus months.. I have been a nanny all my life and I have always made fresh home made foods and belove me the more you introduce them to now the more they will love when they are older...

my son was born on the 8th of september. he has been off baby food for 3 weeks now. he would refuse to eat the baby food. i buy frozen veggies and warm them up and put a little butter on it. or he loves the little pasta with broccolli butter and parm cheese. he also eats tons of fruit like mand. oranges and different flavored apple sauce (no sugar added). he eats LOTS of avocados. when he first started to teeth he didnt want to eat the baby food he just wanted his bottle. so i would try and feed him as much as he would take and a bigger bottle. also hylands makes teething tablets that are homeopathic and that seemed to help alot especially at nap time! denny now just eats everything that we eat. i dont give him juice he only has formula and lots of water. and i dont give him ANY junk food!

Heidi was weaned at 8 months because she was biting me too much (SO PAINFUL), but even then, she was only breast feeding in the morning. She now eats 3 - 8oz bottles of formula per day, and three meals per day (sometimes broken into four or five snack-size meals because her attention span is short or her formula has filled her up). I find it's a great system, as she eats when we eat. Right now, she prefers to be able to feed herself instead of being fed, so I give her baked apple slices, cantaloupe, thin chunks of cheese, banana, pears, avocado, or whatever else she can feed herself while I am also feeding her meals like pureed chicken breast and spinach, for example. She seems much more willing to open her mouth for a spoon if she's also responsible for feeding herself something else. I tried giving her hard boiled egg yolk but she dislikes the texture so far. I have also baked haddok fillets and mashed it up for her - she seems to love that.

My son eats everything I eat. He eats pasta, fruit, veggies, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, egg yolks, beans... The other day he had tortilla with refried beans and cheese. Yesterday he had some cut up chicken tenders, goldfish crackers, peaches, pizza crust, water, fruit punch, breastmilk, grilled brussel sprouts and asparagus, pork chop. He only tried/tasted some of it. He also eats baby food. His biggest thing is still breastmilk though.

Noreen I did not "attack" you. I said you should be careful when making blanket statements. That is not a attack. You posted a website that is in no way an official website- it clearly states on there that it is not written by medical professionals and to consult a medical professional about your childrens health. That is your "proof" and yet you accused me of blindly following my daughters doctors? You can just as easily find a website in support of feeding babies solids.
My whole point, which was not an "attack", was that you should be careful when you are stating blanket information as if people are doing something wrong- you are doing the best thing for YOUR baby, but so are the rest of us, and I was just proving that in some situations it is not only perfectly acceptable to feed our 9 month olds solids but in fact can be necessary. You turned around and attacked me by accusing me of going to uneducated doctors, not doing my own research and blindly following these doctors.
Hats off to you for being the best mother you can be to your children- and hats off to the rest of us for doing the same.

I am not saying that you should feed your daughter anything. I was simply backing up my statement earlier before you attacked me by saying that my statement was a "blanket" statement. I don't know your situation. I am proving that babies main source of nutition should be breastmilk or formula until they are atleast one.

Noreen, OF COURSE I did my own research. Of the two doctors I take my daughter to one is Yale educated, one is Georgetown educated. Not some "uneducated doctors". In addition to their credientials, I have also done TONS of my own research. My daughter was not getting taller, was not gaining weight and at points was actually losing weight. These doctors dont ever tell me what to do, they discuss options with me and we make devisions together. They have also made my daughters health a priority in their practice- our visits are given 2x the amount of time as regular visits, any time she is sick I am seen right away. They have been outstanding. As a practice they recommend /encourage breastfeeding for as long as possible, so our first choice was not to move her to solids. We worked on my diet, we tried just letting her nurse on demand with out a schedule, and nothing was working. She was not growing. She simply was not getting enough of what she needed from breast milk. She has not had her 9 month check up yet, but was seen last week for a routine check of her weight and this is the FIRST time she has stayed on track.
Your responses to my situation are frustrating and insulting. To suggest I am "blindly following" "not well educated" doctors is way out of line. I have committed myself to knowing everything I possibly can about my daughters development and health- I have been VERY careful about decisions I make for my daughter to ensure she is in the best health possible.
Thank you for the website, I read through it, and I dont see ANY mention of solid feedings for babies with growth concerns.

My son is about 8.5 months old (9/29), and he started eating solids around 5.5 months old. I tried waiting until 6 months, but he was just so hungry all of the time.
Anyway, as it pertains to what he eats: he eats a lot of various things- cottage cheese, apple sauce, banana, avocado, eggs (yes, I feed him the whites), berries-he loves blackberries, bread just not much, jarred baby food, small pieces of beef, pork, chicken and turkey, beans (kidney, black, baked), mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese-that's all I can think of right now, but I'm sure that's not everything. I try to feed him stuff that he can feed himself, as well as feed him things that he still needs to eat with his spoon.
Bridget,
I am sorry to hear you daughter has had so many health problems, but I'm glad the introduction of solids has really helped. My son has always been in the upper reaches of the weight chart. I could not imagine him falling from 80% to 5%.

My son too fell off the charts while breastfeeding. He actually has a sensitivity to cow'svmilk, we just found out. So, we've been giving him soy milk and baby food 3 times a day. He's doing so much better, and caught his weight back up to where it should be. All doctors are different but most will tell you from 6-12 months milk intake will diminish and solids and juice/water intake will increase. I've known people to breastfeed well after their children's first birthday. Question. ...my son doesn't have teeth but is teething. I haven't given him any table food and am nervous to. What things are good starters?

Noreen of course it was a blanket statement, saying ALL babies should do something is a blanket statement. While babies should be getting SOME of their nutrition from breastmilk or formula they also need nutrition from solids- babies nutritional needs change after 6 months. It is not "normal" for a baby to go from 80% to being off the charts, nor is it normal for a baby to not gain weight for months. My daughter gained less than 2 lbs in 4 1/2 months- all while being exclusively breastfed. That is not "normal". Also, it is not normal for a baby not to grow in height- which my daughter was also struggling with. And I can promise you my doctor is very well educated. From the time I was 20 weeks pregnant I have had to see specialists for some of my daughters health problems- I have seen top specialists out of National Childrens Hospital in D.C. My doctor was recommended by multiple doctors as the best I could find in our area- the DC Metro area in Virginia. I have worked closely with thim since my daughters birth and I have full confidence in his advice.
I am not arguing that breastmilk and forumla provide great nutrition and are extremely healthy for babies, my daughter gets the required breastmilk but is eating 3 meals of solids and 2 snacks a day. For the first time since birth her weight has stayed on the same curve- which is what the goal was.

I don't know what it is in the States, but here in NZ, breastmilk/formula is the most important source, so should be offered before solids from 4-6 months, but from 7 months, although breastmilk/formula is still important, the nutrients from the food is important for their development, should milk should be offered after solids. Babies iron supply starts to diminish at 6 months old - it's a fact that a 7 month old has the same iron requirements as his/her father! So, I do agree that milk is still important, but it does lose it's importance after they are on solids properly. At least that's what the midwives, child nutritionist and the health organisations tell us.

I don't think it's a blanket statement. Babies are supposed to be getting ATLEAST 24oz of breastmilk or formula a day. Their main source of nutrition SHOULD be breastmilk or formula until they are atleast one. When it comes to breastfeeding and breastmilk, not all doctors are very well edcuated about it. It is completly normal for breastfed babies to "fall off the charts." Those charts are based off of formula fed babies anyways.

Noreen, it is great that you give your daughter mostly breastmilk. It is so healthy for babies. However, Id be careful when you make blanket statements like "their main source of nutrition should be breastmilk or formula at this age." My daughter, as direct by her doctor, is supposed to be getting a majority of her nutrients from food, and has been since she was about 7 months, as directed by her doctor. She was not gaining weight and at each appointment was dropping in percentiles- from 80%, to 50%, to 30% to 5%. She was also barely getting any taller- she grew only 1/4" between 3 and 6 months. Breastmilk and formula is great for babies at this age, but getting nutrients from food is also great for babies and sometimes is very important- this is more of a decision based on individual babies.

Abby (9/23) is still 95% breastfed! She gets some solids off my plate. LIke last night, we had mixed veggies, so I put some whole peas and choped carrot on her tray. She ate some of it, most of it ended up on the floor. That was her solid intake for yesterday. Today, she hasn't had any yet. But she might get some tonight with our dinner. Depends on her. Their main source of nutrition should be breastmilk or fomula at this age.

Strawberries are the berries you arent supposed to give them, but Blueberries and most other berries are perfectly safe. I cut them in half because Im afraid of her choking. I give my daughter whole wheat toast or apple cinnamon toast. I go to a local bakery and buy loafs there like cherry bread, gingerbread. She loves them all. My daughter also LOVES tofu and steamed or mashed sweet potato. She isnt always very fond of fruit so we try to give her some jar food- she has never really liked Gerber but she loves Earths Best. My daughter was born on the 24th and is also teething. Fortunately she is still eating, I think it makes her gums feel better. For breakfast she eats small bits of fruit, like melons or blueberries and has some pieces of toast. I usually give her toast like apple cinnamon in the morning. Occasionally she will have some scrambled egg or she will share some of my plain oatmeal. She usually has a snack mid morning of some puffs or toast or fruit. For lunch she will have toast with hummus, small bits of chicken, tofu, veggies like green beans, whole wheat pasta and some jar food sometimes- we have Earths Best. She has an afternoon snack of puffs or toast and then for dinner she has meat- chicken or pork, veggies, tofu, pasta and usually some jar food again. She also still nurses before naps and at bedtime.
