my son isn't talking much!! HELP?

my son was born September 8th 2009, he can say words, and repeat most everything if i point at it and say "flower" he will repeat it. i can ask him to go get me something and he understands, or where something is, he will go and look and say "oh! there it is!" but he is still taking me to show me what he wants ( like to the fridge to get a drink) he won't actually ask with worlds for a drink or say I'm thirsty or hungry he just shows me. should i be worried? i have had 3 people now tell me i should get his ears checked. we have a friends baby who is a year older who was talking and communicating by 12 months! and his little cousin is 2 months younger and was talking a lot way before Dominic was even saying anything. he is very physically ahead of the other kids we know who are in the same age group. he can climb like no other!! he plays on the big kid play ground and can climb by himself to the very top with out falling. the past few months he has been picking up words like crazy and way more vocal then before. is anyone else's kids doing this? and what are you doing about it?

HI Andrea My son was born september 2 and I just got him talking. He was having every thing givin to him by his sister or I and I Was very worried and I even got him a speech lady that would come 3 times a week when they stopped showing up and I was stuck.. He would through hugh fits when he did not get his way or I did not get what he wants. I was so scared that I did not know where to turn. or what to do I was hoping it would just come to him.. BUT last month I said I was tired of the ladys not showing up so I looked on line to find what they done so I could kinda do it my self.. I learned that its just a lot of work. When I would sat down to do my home work I would talk out loud to him like I was really just talking to him. When I would ask him what he wanted i would give him 2 choses and he would have to say the word and No pointing he would get really mad at me and I was so hurt most of the time but One day out of the blue I hard him talking to his sister in the room and he was saying full senteses I thought I was in a transe I could not believe it.. It takes some kids longer then others but I learned that I should not talk to him like he is a child to have conversations with him like he is older person or older kid. to give choses and Try and get him to tell you what it is that he wants. also when you read him books make him tell you what is on the page.... Well I really hope this helps It was a long road for my son and I and I really thought it was me but Its not It just takes some kids longer just remeber that OK

Personally, I have chatty little girls, but I can assure you there are MANY other little boys out there like yours. Especially boys who are very active may have little concern for language development in the early years. It is usually a good idea to see a specialist so you can ensure that you are maximizing his language development. The fact that he is picking up speed as he approaches the 3 year mark sounds like a lot of little boys I know.

So, I don't think it is worrisome, but it may be worth discussing with his physician.
