Serving Formula Cold?

Does anybody else do this? I have always warmed my daughter's bottles, but this last weekend we were on a camping trip and it just kinda made sense to give it to her cold, I wouldn't want to drink warm or lukewarm liquids on a hot day. She hasn't been spitting up as much as she normally does, actually feedings have been going a lot better since I started doing that. Just wondering if anyone else gives their babies cold formula, or if that's bad and I shouldn't be doing it. I read the instructions on the can of formula anit doesn't say anything about it. Any help appreciated!

I have two kids and have never warmed their bottle. I don't know why, I guess I wasn't listening at this class. My daughter is almost four and my son is 8 months. The bottle I give is at room temperature. They both seemed to enjoy it and I haven't ever really thought about it.

I have done it since James was put on the formula. I read there is no medical reason not to...just babies preference. In fact, James spits up bad when he has warm formula.

Hello, I have an 8 year old and a 9 month old. My pediatrician for my 8 year old told me when he was a baby that i really only had to warm his bottle up for the first 2 months. He described it as only a luxury on baby's tummy. It's just more soothing to the baby to have it warm. I haven't been warming my 9 month old's bottles since he was 2 months old and he is just fine..:)

I rarely heat my daughters... I keep the water in the bottles at room temp & add powdered formula when its needed. I find it mixes easier than when its cold, BUT if she won't drink it I put it in the fridge and she seems to like it better cold now. But every baby is different, if she likes it cold and if she spits up less I would go with them cold.

It's really a preference thing. doesn't make a difference to it's make up etc. I stopped warming my sons bottle when he was around 8 weeks. I had forgotten to when I gave it to him and he was non-plussed about it. Since then, it has always been done room temperature or chilled =] xx

I only warmed pumped breast milk bottles because they were cold and kept in the fridge. For formula, I have always just boiled a kettle of water and left it at room temp for formula and Heidi has never had the choice. :) Also, if I'm feeding her baby food from the jar (usually only if we are out), I give it to her room temp. That way I don't have to worry about keeping homemade food cold until serving time, when I'd need to warm it. Makes life much easier.

My son loves cold over warm formula! I tried to warm it but it seems he likes it better cold.

My baby has always taken his formula room temperature. Since he has been teething, he has been okay with his bottles a little colder. He just popped his first tooth yesterday. Yahoo!

My son wont take the formula warm he likes it cooler so I have been doing that way since I found out that breastfeeding wasn't going to happen. He hasn't had any issues. I had to start putting rice in his bottle at 4 months old because the formula wasn't thick enough. The doctor didn't have any problems with either so, I say as long your baby is good and things are fine keep doing it. Also, trust your gut.

I only warmed my son's bottles when he was little bitty. At 3 months we started using room temp infant water. Now we have a fridge with water in the door and thats what we use. Kehlson has never had any issues with it. He rarely spits up and has no digestive issues due to it. I always say that all babies are different and you have to figure out whats best for your baby.

I have never warmed up my kids bottles. I always figured that they were fed room temp. bottles in the hospital why start warming them up when I get home. I try to make the bottles as close to room temp as possible but for the most part my daughter drinks a chilled bottle everytime.

I look at it like this your baby will be on milk eventually, would you give them milk from the fridge??? My daughters both drank there formula @ room temp and once they started on milk it wasn't a huge adjustment. My little one 8months will not touch a bottle if it has been heated.

Always! It happened one day when I was out and oculdn'theat his bottle up, and since then, I haven't bothered. He drinks his bottle straight from out of the fridge.

I've used every temperature you can think of; cold, warm, room temperature. My boy has never minded. In fact, we live on a tropical island, and if it's during the day, I'll give it to him cold (take a bottled water out of the cooler). Or if he's been playing a lot, he'll get it cold. Only if I take the bottle out of the fridge at night do I warm it up, he drinks it better because he is tired. His daycare warms up bottles, but that's the only time he gets warm bottles during the day. Sometimes warming a bottle is a huge inconvenience depending on where you are or what you're doing. If he gets used to different things, I believe that as he gets older he'll be less likely to throw a fuss about little changes, like cold or warm juice.

I never gave my daughter anything but room temperate. I guess I never thought about it b/c we transitioned from breast to bottle and Hello I didn't warm up my boobs! Breast millk is room temp, maybe a little warmer. So I always just made her bottles with luke warm water. She's never minded. In fact, when I was pumping, she would get cold breastmilk when my husband watched her and didn't care.

We have never heated our daughters formula. In the hosp the bottles were room temp and she took them fine and so we never changed. Actually, once in a while really early on when she would fight sleep at nite we would warm it up a bit but that was the only time. I don't see anything wrong with it. My daughter has never been sick to this day (8 1/2 mos) and didn't really spit up that much and no gas build up either. Keep doing whatever feels right for you and works for your little one.

I usually heat up the bottle, but have once or twice given her a mildy warm bottle & she didn't seem too fased. probably just depends on what the baby prefers. i think i'll start making the bottels cooler, as sometimes she just can't wait - although we are heading towards winter. will have to see how it goes

We didn't start on formula until he was a few weeks old and yes, we used the ready-to use stuff. If it was room temperature (right out of the can) I just gave it to him but if I took it out of the fridge, I warmed it up. I was also using a supplemental nurser so I wanted the formula to be the same temp as the breast milk. Sometimes I can get him to take a room temp bottle but he doesn't seem to keen on a cold bottle yet.

well if you think back to when you had him, the hospital gave your baby room temp formula, they didn't heat it up. they just pull it out of the case and pop a nipple on. i have heard some old wives tales that cold formula will make a baby colicy. that's just what it is though, an old wives tale.

We still mix all my son's bottles one at a time so it is required to melt the powder that the water be warm. I guess I could start mixing a few ahead of time and putting them in fridge. I do offer him cool water occasionally but he still isn't thrilled with using a sippy cup. I guess it is a good idea to start transitioning him to cooler liquids because you serve regular milk cold.

My daughter will have her bottle slightly warmed at home but if we are out & about she is quite happy to take it at room temp so I think its just what the baby wants, if they are happy without it warmed I dont think its a prob x

It is nice to know that I would not have to warm my baby girl's bottle! I guess I am a creature of habit & continue to warm her bottle everytime.....I think I will try room temp/ cold ---to experiment and see if she will enjoy it too!! thanks for sharing everybody ;o)

I have never heated my son's formula. If you don't give it to them warm in the first place then they will drink it room temp or cold. Half the time I pull a bottle straight from the fridge and give it to him and he never had a second thought about it. Think about this- when you start giving him/her cow's milk will you serve it warm or cold? I think giving formula to him/her cold eases the transition for later anyway.

We started giving my daughter room temp formula at about 4 months and she's 8 now. I just found it easier for our lifestyle and didn't want not having warm water where we went to be an issue. She seems to being doing just fine on it :)

i don't heat my son's formula during the day anymore - a few months ago i stopped just because with nicer weather we're on the go more and sometimes i won't be able to heat it up...want him to be used to it both ways if necessary. i do heat his bedtime drink though :)

I don't think it matters either way. I think it's more of a preference of the baby...for instance, my son will NOT drink formula unless it's warmed up a little lol. I've tried, but he refuses. :)

I found this on an online news article.

Heating infant formula is not a requirement, though some babies may prefer it.

My oldest daughter always preferred warm formula to cold, even though my youngest daughter (who was breastfed primarily) would take formula at room temperature when it was offered. Though many parents assume that infant formula must be heated, that isn't the case, according to the Mayo Clinic. Infant formula can be served cold or at room temperature, without harming the baby, if the water used was sterilized before mixing the formula.

I dont really see a problem with it. Like you said, its probably nicer for her on a hot day.
