hi there, i still use thermometer for excess gas as instructed by my doc, but all along he insisted NO WATER as they can get water intoxication (my mum swore i had water when i was a baby, but they have obviously found a medical reason worth listening too!). The formula and or breastmilk your baby is having provides the right amount of fluids he/she needs.

My niece was always consitipated and my sister in would make a 6oz bottle with prune juice instead of water once a day. It helped a lot!

The "Danger" is that it will dilute the childs fluids and electrolyes such as sodium and potassium. If potassium levels are to low it can cause cramping, weakness and possible cardiac problems. If sodium levels fall too low it can cause seizures, confusion, and not wanting to eat. Every baby is different. I did not say not to give the child any water, water is good but in moderation. You just dont want to dilute the electrolytes too much or you will have a really sick baby on top of the constipation. Let me know if this helps you out.

Ok i am a nurse, as well as a mother. Giving the baby too much water will dilute his electrolytes like sodium and potassium so I wouldn't give him much water. However you can give him apple juice. Just hold him up a little higher when feeding him the juice cause it is alot thinner than formula. If this does not help try giving him prune juice. If he does start going and it seems like he may be going too much then dilute the juice with 2 ounces of sterile water. I have been giving my daughter apple juice for a month now and it helps her but I have to dilute it or she goes to much which can also cause loss of electrolytes. Try it full strength first for about a day and see how that works. Let me know if that helps..

Since you're a nurse, can u explain to me the 'danger' of giving a baby water? I give my daughter water all the time & she is fine. She's active, she's happy, she's starting to crawl, she sits up by herself, she can stand when holding things, she laughs.... ? And she JUST* turned 4 months Jan 4th.

Or does it just affect diff babies differently?

My pediatrician has warned me against giving my baby water. He said it dilutes the sodium in his blood and can actually cause a seizure. My niece was having the same issue. She wasn't pooping, but it also didn't seem to bother her one bit. Her pediatrician also warned against giving water or diluting formula for the same reasons. They gave her some suppositories and they work within minutes. But, the doctor also said not to rely too much on them. Now, she poops only about once a week and it isn't hardened or anything. According to her pediatrician, there is nothing to worry about as long as baby isn't fussy. This is normal for some children. Now, my three-month old son, who used to poop at least five times a day, has begun a very similar poop cycle. However, when he and my niece do poop it's in excess. Please, before you decide to give your baby water, consult with your pediatrician first.

I don't know what the deal is with water ? I've never head that before, it's sooo strange. Seems like it would be find giving a baby water since their formula IS water, it's strange how diff doctors are.

this is gross but it works....place the child in their bath tub with warm water after giving them 2 ounces of apple juice. massage their belly start on their right side and from the ribs down make the letter I..then do it again but male the letter L and then the letter U. Repeat this and then do bicycling with their legs. This makes my daughter after being consitpated....but it is usually in the tub before I can get her into a diaper.

Gerber makes apple/prune juice. I've used it and it worked within a few hours. I also gave my little one stage 1 apples, or prunes. she poops at least once a day now without a problem.

My son is 3 1/2 months and has had pooping issues since birth. I tried everything. I ordered the low iron formula off line cause most places wont sell it and that DIDNT help. He poops daily almost but its little tiny rock hard pebbles. His pediatrition (all will have different opinions) said for me to give him 1 teaspoon of karo syrup in 4 oz of a formula bottle as needed. Baby arent supposed to have water very often. I have also used 1 oz of baby prune/apple juice mixed with 1 oz water daily and that helped but my ped said she didnt want him getting his calories from juice.

there is a over the counter medication that you can get called Stomach Calm it helps with Colic, diaherra and constipation...if you cant get this specifically I would go up to the pharmacy and ask them what they would recomend. My doc said thought that all babies are different some will poo every day several times and others will only do it once a week it is all up to the baby and not to worry too much...your mum though and if you have any major concerns then see your doc...but I would go to Pharmacy first sometimes they have just the right advice for you!!!

Are you giving her an iron-fortified formula? That will constipate some babies. Maybe try switching to an iron-free formula for a while?

I have the same problem with my son the Dr. said to give him 1oz of prune juice mix with 1 oz of water you can also try 1 oz of apple juice. every day. the prune juice is the regular one they no longer make it for babies at least that is what my Dr. told me but as long as you mix it with water is fine.

is she breast fed? if so YOU should cut down on the diary products. that make the baby constipated. give her some extra tummy time, also there is something called mylocolin. that helps too.

It is the same with my child and she gets very irritated in the evenings when she wants to poop but cannot get it out since it is too hard. I think this started when I started giving her more formula than breast milk. I think you can think about trying a different brand of formula and see if it helps. Below are the options I had tried.

1) One ounce of Gerber prune & apple juice helps a little bit

2) Also a little bit of warm water does the trick.

3) Holding her legs up such that it presses her tummy sometimes helps.

4) Even a tummy massage gets it going sometimes.

5) But if it gets really bad, then I cut a small thin strip of soft soap, coat it in baby oil and push it through her bottom and hold it there for a minute. It creates the pressure needed to get her poop out. I know it sounds yucky, but it is a fool proof trick and gets the best results. She feels much better after passing out the stool and then she feeds much better.

have u tried giving her water, sounds like she is constipated?! My sound was forever consitpated. And I use to give him water by it's self and do some leg exercises and rub his belly in a circular motion (clockwise)
