I am a first time mom & my little one is 10 weeks. I wonder if she can start tummy time for brief periods everyday now-- or is it better to wait another couple of weeks until she has better head control? Any input as to what other moms have done is appreciated. ;o)

I also was concerned on when to start tummy time and I was because of the SIDS. But the doc told me when I went to her 2 week visit to give her tummy time anytime that she is awake because it helps them learn to control their head and works on their crawling reflexes. When you lay your baby down, you will definetely see those crawling reflexes that I'm talking about. Hope this helps!

Being on their tummy is exactly how they learn to control their head!

We started tummy time from Day 1! My daughter sleeps on her tummy and is incredibly strong! I think the whole idea of babies sleeping on their backs is super stupid!

Ellie is not quite 3 months yet and has been rolling over for a few weeks now. She holds her head up almost all the time when put on her tummy to play.

Hi, my lil' one is 10 weeks old also. I started tummy time not long after I got home from the hospital. And at her two month needles, the nurse told me I wasn't giving her enough tummy time. I basically leave her on her tummy, until she begins to fuss and cry. My daughter hates being on her tummy and I hate seeing her uncomfortable... but its a must, everyday!

Yea, I think you can. I have been doing tummy time with Leroy at least once a day if not more. He likes to be on his back more than on his tummy. I would put a blanket under him/her so that the carpet doesn't give your baby rug burn on the face or nose. I would hang out with him/her and see how your baby reacts to tummy time. I think it is good for building muscles that will be used later when they learn to crawl, it also helps them build neck and back muscle. If you feel your little one needs more time to get more head control, you might just put him/her on their back and try that. You can also sit the baby on your knee and support his/her lower back by placing one hand on his/her back and one hand on his/her belly. Your hands will act like a brace or support for those undeveloped back muscles. This can give your baby the oppertunity to try out the feeling of sitting up. It might aid in strengthing neck and back muscles and increasing head control. Try it out!! Let me know how it works for you.

Yes you can and should. My little one just turned 9 weeks and has been having tummy time for about a month now. When we first started she didn't like it very much and would only tolerate 1 or 2 mins at a time or would just fall asleep. Now she plays on her tummy for atleast 1/2 hour a day. She is holding her head up really well and has also started rolling up on her sides(hasn't quite gotten all the way over yet though).

Now, my first daughter hated to be on her tummy when she was a baby even if she was laying on my chest while she was on her tummy she would just fuss and swirm.

It just goes to shew that every baby is different. I say give it a try for a while and see if he is ready.

An alternative to tummy time is to put your child on his stomach over a boppy pillow. Put the back side of the boppy pillow under their arms. It makes the child do the same work, but is a little easier on their stomach. My daughter preferred this way so much more.

I started giving my baby tummy time right after she was born. At first it would only be for a few minutes per day. She is 3 months now and will go for sometimes 1/2 hour or longer at a time. Her neck and upper body is very strong now and she has even rolled over on her back a few times. You can definitely start now just start slowly. Start once a day for 5 or so min and and then do it 2-3 times per day and then start increasing the time. I think by 3 months they should be able to do 15 min 3 times per day. Judge it based on how she responds though cuz some babies hate it! You can also do tummy time with you laying flat on your back and having her on your tummy so she can look at you or use an activity mat instead. Good luck!
