What consonants are your babies saying?

We had a Parents As Teachers meeting and the woman said our son, Liam, should be saying B's and D's and stringing them together with vowels like Baba or Dada. Liam is saying Baba and even throwing in the letter M occasionnally but no D's. How are you little ones doing?

I've also heard that babies that seem to be ahead of the curve with their motor skills like crawling are typically a tad behind with verbal skills but it's nothing to worry about. Liam is considered to be a little ahead with his motor skills so I'm wondering if that's why he's not saying things that are typical at his age or if the PAT's expectations are as typical as they make it sound.

My little guy - born 9-3-09 - starting crawling just last month but he wasn't babbling, just making ahh noises. Now in the past week, he's pulling himself up on everything and babbling with Dadada and Yayaya. Typical is typical for each baby. He's happy and healthy. We're not worried at all.

My daughter is one "step" away from actually crawling although she already does the army crawl. For about two months now shes been saying mama and dada and for the past month has started saying baba, nana, nini, tata, mema, papa, hehe, lala, gaga and some others and just recently started saying my mama! I love that one lol

My little Martin started out with "dadadada", and now has moved on to "mummummummum" and recently started "babababa". Otherwise, he likes to pretend to roar. It's so cure when he looks up and smiles his mischievious smile, and goes "raaaaaaaaaar"

My son will be 8 months tomorrow, and has been crawling since 6 months. He is already pulling up on EVERYTHING and standing. He even gets into the dogs toys and dog food. :) He is also saying alot of sounds, dada. Which was first. Now it's dadadada, mamamama, gaga, baba, and lots more. And like a week or so ago he has started growling. Kind of like a dog. It's tooo cute, but yet so strange. Or atleast i think so.

babys grab the sounds they like! my oldest son said mom first and played with "m" and "o" sounds. However, my youngest said "da-dee" first and he plays with "m", "h", and the "ow" sound. For both of my kids I began saying each letter of the alphabet and the corresponding sound at 4 months. By 7 months i began to show them flash cards at the same time. When you do this, the babies will show you what sounds they are comfortable with by mimicking you. Do this at least once a day, and make it fun... do a few silly faces, and tickles while saying the sound. Have Fun!! -- i had to repost because the other was my game page, lol long story!

My daughter Jazmine was born 4th of Sept.. she is well ahead in motor development.. standing on her own without assistance as of a week before she turned 8 months.. HOWEVER.. she is only saying babba! She has said mama and dadda by accident.. but not continuous like all the other babies seem to be.. at her last appointment, they advised I get her hearing tested! We did, and she came back with perfect results.. I think she might just be a later talker! I can't wait to hear MAMMA!!! lol

You are not saying if your child has older siblings if that is the case that is why your child is not talking. It is no big deal if they do not do the mama dada baba all at once. When you talk to your child and they look at you with the big grins they hear you just keep working with them it will pan out in the long run. If you have other siblings besides the baby becareful as the baby will use them to speak for them. Just keep sounding like a broken record and love your babies it will work itself out but once your child acts as if they can not hear you then be worried but not before due to not all babies are on the same page my son does his dada baba bubu mama mumu so it will work out and I use PAT also but I used them with my other children as well. You just have to understand they are telling you this stuff due to what the paper work they have says a child is to do at these different stages keep in mind others are early bloomers and then there are those that are late bloomers. Here is an example my other children had teeth by 4 months of age my baby is 8 months old as of the 10th and he is just now getting his first tooth it will be ok. He tried to roll over at 5 days the others was way past that, it will be fine just keep watching you will be amazed :-)

My little guy was born 9/11/09 and has been saying Dada for about 2 months now. Also says baba, mama etc.... started crawling at 6 months and pulling himself up and standing at 7 months! People say that's early, and that he will be walking by 9 or 10 months!...Part of me hopes it's not that soon, cuz I have a 2 year old to run after too!!

She has been moving in circles and sliding backwards since about 5.5 months but no crawling yet. But she does pull herself up on things.

My daughter Ashlynn was born 9/11/09 says Mama, Dada, baba, this, moo, goo, cat, dog. She watches the system Your Baby can read, but with moter skills she will get up on her knees like she's gonna go but doesn't just will rock back and forth, and she will do low kinda like crawls with her arms and elbows to move in circles! It's so cute she looks at you like I did it I moved! :)

My baby says dada, mama, nana (big sister), and we swear she said bye today. She's crawling. I've never heard of a correlation, but it's interesting to hear. I have always heard boys talk later than girls and that boys are more physically advanced (motor skills). I don't really believe that's true, but it's just another one of those old wives' tales.that are fun to talk about! All babies develop differently, so don't worry it everything isn't just as you think it should be.

all serena used to do was blow raspberries and scream and make what i call dinosaur noises but in the last few weeks shes started to babble up a storm she can say va, fa, mum(not mama lol), baba, aha, ha, he, yaya and a rare dada and also yells out the random "yeah!" lol..shes been standing (assisted obviously lol) since like 3 or 4 mths, can sit up fine and kind of crawls(just getting the hang of it but still mostly goes backward lol) and just started pulling up on everything for the last week or so, she also tries to stand up from a crawl position which usually just makes her fall over same when shes sitting, she tucks her knees under herself and tries to stand and only succeeds in launching herself onto her face lol...shes 7 1/2mths

I just want to clarify that I'm not trying to be competitive or that I'm worried about my son's development. I was just stating what the PAT woman said and was curious to share and see how all the other little one's are doing at this age. All babies develop at their own pace. I just think it's exciting to hear what new things, including speech, our babies are discovering.

In other news, I have started to hear Liam say the letter M and W now and then. It's fun to watch them grow. He turned 8 months today and, before we know it, our babies will be talking our ears off! :-)

I dont really know whats typical but my daughter is just now 7 months and she talks ALL the time. Shes said dadadada and mamamama for about 3 weeks now and she says hi, no, baby, dog and yay... plus a lot of saying letters. She has her b's m's n's t's p's and maybe a few more. She really like the abc's so i think thats why she talks so much. as far as motor skills she started crawling properly 2 weeks ago and has been standing pretty well and pulling up really well for about a week. but most babies i know her age arent crawling yet or talking as much.

My daughter is cooing mostly but there is the occasional dada (my husband is so excited) and mummum. They are not connected to anything yet. My son babbled young as well but he didn't really start talking such that we could understand him (past a few initial words like NO!, down, car etc) until he was well past eighteen months. Then it exploded. He started calling my husband Daddy when he was about 18 months and Mummy for me didn't start until about three months later.

It drives me slightly crazy when there is this huge expectations put on what children do and how quickly they do it. There is a serious competitive parenting thing going on these days. Some women tell me that their kids are saying this and that and what I hear out of their mouths is completely different. Sometimes, I think that we like to think that our kids are better at things than they really are. Which is okay until it starts making others feel less worthy. Okay, off of my soapbox.
Did this woman say that they "should" be doing this or "could" be doing this. Every child develops at their own pace. I don't know how old your child is, but your profile picture suggests to me that he is probably right on target for his speech. I would bring it up with your doctor or do a little research on milestones for young children. I'm sure that you have nothing to worry about, though. Talk to your child, read to your child, I'm sure you are a wonderful mother. Just relax and let life happen.

Owain will be 8 mths on Saturday. He has been saying Dada since 6 mths, now says dad, mama, hi, ba, bob, hi, yeah, well lots of things that sound like words. But He is only just figuring out this crawling business now. This morning he finally scooted a few scoots for the first time! I know he's going to be a handful when he gets going, so I've been kinda happy he hasn't crawled a whole lot yet! But this is a very interesting note!

She's making all kinds of babbling sounds, but she mostly says dadadadadada, which I kinda wanted cause at 3am she calls for dadadadada instead of mamamamama when she's poopy lol. I think she's trying to say puppy now but no mama. The health nurse at her 6 month appointment said most don't have their first words till 8-9 months and said she's ahead, but she's not crawling yet, just sitting and rolling

Seth (born 9/23) is pretty much only saying dadadadada right now. My husband keeps rubbing it in that he's saying Dada and not Mama yet. I just keep telling him that's because it is the easiest to say. LOL! He doesn't believe me though. Seth makes a lot of other noises, but not really consenants. He likes to gurgle a lot. He isn't crawling or even scooting around yet. Oh well he will get there soon.

My 7 months old daughter is saying Dada, Baba, Mama, Nana, Meme, Nene. She babbles so much just like me. I'm a talkative person. She doesn't crawl yet still. She just goes in circles by moving her arms or she just does small commando crawls where she uses her elbos and just drags her legs. LOL. Or she's just kicking her legs with her arms out waving about but staying in the same spot. It's sooo cute watching her trying.

My daughter is pretty far ahead with her motor skills, shes been pulling herself to standing for over a month now, and is crusing around. I wondered if she was a little slower in her verbal skills, so its so interesting to me to see you write this! For about a month and a half she has been saying Mama, but its only with in the last 2-3 weeks that she really started babbling, she now says Dada, Mama, BaBa, NiNi, NeNe, and what sounds like Good :)
