My 12 week old daughter has been sleeping through the night since she 2 weeks old. Currently she sleeps from 8pm to 7am without waking, however if I do not wrap her she does not sleep as well. I know I will eventually have to stop wrapping her and I am dredding the day because I'm worried her sleeping will suffer! My midwife said that she has a startle reflex and this will disapear around 4 to 5 months and she should sleep fine without being wrapped after this has happened. Has anyone noticed this startle reflex and when does it normally disapear? Has anyone got adivce on how to and when to ween their baby off being wrapped or know a good way of approaching it?

Quoting Popi:

My son will be 12 weeks old tomorrow, about a week ago I started the "un-swaddling process" For a few days(and nights) I only swaddled one arm, leaving the other to "flail". He didn't sleep as well but at least he was able to get used to it a little at a time. Then after he started staying asleep, I swaddled just his body, leaving both arms out. He gets really cold so I put him in his jammies then put him in a sleep sack, then swaddle his body. I would never be able to stand it but he loves it. He kicks blankets over his head (go figure)lol, so I don't feel comfortable just laying a blanket over him. I hope this helps, it's worth a shot.

i saw this method on a parenting dvd and apparently its the best way. my son has never liked being swaddled but i still use the grow suit they r amazing i highly recomend them. just a note though that they must be unswaddled by the time they are rolling as they wont have their arms free to push their face away from the mattress and they may not be able to roll back. good luck!

I stopped wrapping my son about 4 - 6 weeks ago only because its so hot this time of year and i didnt feel comfortable wrapping him and putting him to bed like that especially when we dont have an airconditioner. He was a little unsettled for about a week mainly due to the startle reflex and the freedom, but it did work out in the end. Another idea is you could try wrapping your daughter with one arm out for a few nights, then two arms out for a few nights, and then take the wrap away and tuck them in with just a sheet on top (unless its too cold, then a blanket). I find my son is a bit of a blanket boy and even though its hot i still prefer to tuck him in with a sheet...he doesnt settle well if he can kick around too much, but in saying that hes usually kicked all his blankets off by morning. I hope this post helps :)

I was really afradi to stop swaddling them too but it worked out fine , we stopped when they were 5 weeks old and put them into their own cots as they were sharing , I used the grobag sleeping bags and they were great, I was terrified that they would not sleep as they usually liked to be wrapped so tight but from the first night I had no problems , I think it is us that worried more than them !!! Give the sleeping bags a try .
